MANCINI: "I'VE NEVER ARGUED WITH ADRIANO"
Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:00:01
MILAN - Part four of Roberto Mancini's end of season interview with Inter Channel:
Mancini, among the memories of your first season at Inter is the incredible comeback against Sampdoria in less than six minutes. From 2-0 down to 3-2. Can it be forgotten?
"No, it hasn't been forgotten. All the class of our players came out then, because you can't normally turn around a match like that in six minutes. At that point tactics no longer count, but the players' class and their desire to overturn the result. We have class and desire, and we have also shown it on other occasions."
Alvaro Recoba was decisive against Sampdoria in Milan. He has had a lot of injuries during the course of the season and hasn't played much. Were you perhaps expecting more from him?
" Recoba has to understand thet he doesn't have many years of the top-level football he deserves in front of him. He is at an age where he has to make the so-called leap. He knows it, and we have spoken about it many times. It depends on him alone, and no longer on the others. Recoba lacks nothing, he just has to have the necessary desire and continuity. He has to do it every morning when he gets up and gets ready to come to training. I think it's right to expect this attitude from him because he's part of a club that loves him, with an owner that rates him highly."
Another subject: Mancini and the youngsters. You have given a lot of them their debuts. Do you consider this an important part of your job?
"At a club it's nice to win the Primavera championship, but the Youth Sector's work takes on importance when boys get into the first team. At Inter there are some quality youngsters because the Youth Sector has worked well in these years, so the boys have the chance of getting to the top of the mountain. I made my Serie A debut at sixteen and remained for twenty years. If a player is good he gets his chance. We will take almost the whole Primavera squad to the pre-season training retreat so we can get to know the boys thoroughly and understand even better who could be useful to the first team. Sometimes it's more useful for a boy to work with great champions for a year rather than go and get experience in Serie C."
You have often said how disappointed you have been about not giving Giorgos Karagounis more chances to play. And your explanation for the Davids situation?
" Karagounis is an extraordinary lad. Every player should have his character when you see the work he does when he's not playing. He always gives his best in training and in the end he had the chance to play regularly until the Coppa Italia final. In the two-legged tie with Roma he didn't play in the first leg because of a physical problem, and Greece took him away before the return leg. But he is extraordinary, just like Gamarra. They are both players and men who have a lot to give and are a help for the coach and an example for their teammates."
And Edgar Davids?
"Yes, this deserves an explanation. For me it's almost like a defeat. At the start of the year I tried to play him regularly. But at that moment - and it wasn't Davids' fault - the team wasn't doing well. When things aren't working you always try to change something. He was more penalised than anyone else and I'm sorry about this."
According to some media, Mancini spent the second half of the season arguing with Adriano. Your reply?
(Mancini laughs) "If those with Adriano were arguments, then mine as a player were wars. I have never argued with Adriano. Sometimes players have verbal disagreements, and sometimes even harsh ones, but this doesn't mean it's an argument. Points of view can also be expressed harshly and positive things can come out of this. But me and him have never argued, and I will repeat this until I'm bored to death. Adriano is a player with great potential and he still has to improve a lot, but not in terms of goals scored. He knows how to score them and he always will score. He has to improve in terms of the team's game. This can help him especially when he's not in top form."
Were you pleased that he played the Coppa Italia final first leg and scored two goals?
"Certainly. I was pleased because Adriano wanted to be there and we all wanted to have him."
Mancini, to finish off, shall we thank your staff?
"Certainly. My staff is made up of good people and this is very important. They have worked well and they have all helped me. Orsi, Salsano, Nuciari. Gaudino and Bisciotti, who I met here at Inter, have also been important. And I'm not forgetting Sergio Vigaṇ, who is important for me. He has worked with me for twenty years and I know his value. They have all been of great help to me, especially in the most difficult moments. But I want to thank the players for how they have behaved right from day one and for how they have finished the season, and the whole club, starting from Dr Moratti and president Facchetti, then Marco Branca, Lele Oriali and all the managers who have worked together with me at Inter. The hope is that next season we have other evenings like Wednesday's. Nice evenings among happy friends. Just like it has been for all Inter fans."

I can see Mancini is preparing the secret cards to be our next starting 11 next year..
Recoba could have more chaces if he proves in the training that he deserve to.. I`m sure he`ll do his best.. die for it Recoba.
Davids had a bad luck, he joined the team that was organized in the first place and he hadnt take his chances in the right time.. I think Mancini is fixing this problem now.
Kara also had a bad luck.. but I can see him playing more times than this year, and playing very good too.
Gamarra on of the best defenders in south America, leading his country to the WC finals defeating all South American giants.. he deserve to play in the defence.. I always respected this player and I`m always wondering he isnt givin a good chance to play!!! I see him shine with the NT and dont even see him in Inter training!!!!!!! ?
I hope things comes better for Inter next season. FORZA NERAZZURRI!!
