Coach Fabio Capello expects the biggest threat to Juventus’ Scudetto next season to come from the two Milan sides.

"Milan will be looking to bounce back from last season, while Inter will be boosted by their success in the Coppa Italia," he said on Monday.

"Both sides already have strong squads, and both are still looking to strengthen them."

Meanwhile, any hopes of new signings Capello had have been dampened by Juventus transfer mogul Luciano Moggi.

"Everyone keeps talking about the players Juventus will sign, but you are all forgetting that last season we won the League by seven clear points," said Moggi.

"We also had the best defensive and attacking records in Serie A. Why would we want new players?"

Moggi went on: "The Juventus transfer rumours have been blown out of all proportion. We have already signed important players and we don’t need any more.

"The side as it is today is more than OK. But we are still on the look out for some transfer bargains.

"The only deals we are interested in are swap deals. But, whatever happens, we will continue to be a thorn in the side of our rivals next season too."

The Juventus squad met up for pre-season training today with unsettled stars Fabrizio Miccoli and Enzo Maresca also present.

The pair are largely regarded as two of the players Moggi was referring to as pawns in transfer swaps, and was quoted in Italian papers as referring to Miccoli as "our piggy-bank."

On Juventus’ hopes for the season, Capello said: "Our main objective is winning the Champions’ League. We have a good enough squad, both quantitatively and qualitatively to win it."

He went on: "We all know each other better than last year, which is good, as team spirit will be crucial this season.

"The World Cup Finals means there will be five midweek rounds in Serie A, so with all our other commitments, it promises to be a tough season all round."

Capello added that he sees Chelsea and Barcelona as Juve’s main opposition for the Champions’ League.

Alessandro Del Piero has urged his Juventus teammates to start the new season in the same manner that they ended the last campaign.

Despite winning Lo Scudetto, the Bianconeri have made some classy additions to the squad and Del Piero believes it is up to the current players to pass on their winning mentality.

“Our competitive attitude is always the same and we’ll try to have it from the very beginning, to keep on winning,” said the Juve skipper.

“Last season ended in a great way and we have what it takes to repeat ourselves.

“We’ll be playing on three fronts and it’s the Coppa Italia which is our first target,” he joked. “In fact, we haven’t won it for a long time.”

And who would be the biggest rivals to Juve’s crown? “Milan has an outstanding attack, made of great players, but Inter too is a well equipped team,” he added.

“On paper, the Scudetto race will be reserved to us and the Milan clubs but, as always, what happens on the pitch will reveal the truth.”

Nicola Legrottaglie is hungry to prove his worth after he completed his loan move from Juventus to Siena.

The stopper was tipped for a bight future after breaking into the Italian national side, but he’s struggled since his move to Juventus two years ago.

The Turin giants have again opted to loan him out, following his spell at Bologna last term, and the former Chievo player is ready to silence his critics.

"Give me some faith," said the central defender. "I’ve not become a poor player and I’ll demonstrate that I still deserve to play at the highest levels.

"There was no room for me in the team in Turin, even if I had hoped that I would be given another chance.

"But Siena believe in me and I think this is the ideal opportunity for me to return to the player I was 24 months ago."

Siena, who are also tracking Bologna ‘keeper Gianluca Pagliuca following his side’s relegation, have waved goodbye to Bruno Cirillo.

The former Inter and Italy Under-21 international has signed a three-year deal with AEK Athens.

Siena have also completed the capture of Argentine striker Roberto Nanni on loan from Dynamo Kiev.

Patrick Vieira has spoken for the first time as a Juventus player after the Italian club beat Real Madrid for his signature.

The French international joined the Bianconeri last night in a £13.7m move from Arsenal and is delighted with his choice of destination.

"I'm really proud and happy today, because it's a really special day," he said at the club’s headquarters in Corso Galileo Ferraris.

"For me, in the last few years, Juventus has always been at the top, not only in European football but also national as well.

"So for me to join Juventus is a fantastic achievement in my career. I'm really proud and really happy.

"It's going to be a really big challenge but I'm going to be ready for that.

"Juventus has been a really stable club in the past few years and when I look at myself as a human being and as a player, and I look at Juventus, it's the perfect club for me.

"I took this decision without being influenced by either (Juventus defender Lilian) Thuram or (Real Madrid’s Zinedine) Zidane. This is my decision because it is my life."

Juventus were first linked to Vieira a few weeks ago and the club admit it was tough landing the 29-year-old.

"The player is not aware of what a battle we had with Real for him," stated director general Luciano Moggi.

"But we insisted and in the end Vieira chose us. I can assure everyone though that Arsenal didn’t sell him voluntarily because he is a champion.

"We’ve dug deep to get him but that is only because we are certain that Vieira will know how to pay us back."

The former Highbury captain added that it was a tough decision to turn his back on his wonderful years in London.

"When you spend nine years somewhere it's always going to be difficult, but when you make a decision you think about what you want to achieve," he added.

"It was quite difficult, but that's life. I achieved a lot with Arsenal, in the nine years I spent there we won a lot of trophies.

"What I want is just to keep going and keep winning trophies for my new team. I’ve not come here to just win the Champions’ League but for everything."

The combative midfielder will now link up again with his former Milan boss Fabio Capello, who once likened him to Frank Rijkaard.

"I was just 19 back then," explained Vieira. "Rijkaard is one of my idols and I’m delighted with the compliment. Capello was a great motivator and he still is now."

The player was also questioned about the possibility that he could be targeted by racist chants in Italy.

"I did evaluate that aspect when I signed but I will deal with that if it ever arises," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Moggi seemed to put away the club’s chequebook following this latest capture.

"We will now look to sell," he stated. "There is an agreement with Sevilla for Enzo Maresca even if he needs to give his OK. We will then place Stephen Appiah and Fabrizio Miccoli."

Boss Fabio Capello believes he now has the best central midfield pair in world football after Patrick Vieira joined Emerson at Juventus.

The Frenchman signed for the Turin giants from Arsenal on Thursday, in a £13.75m move, to significantly strengthen the Italian champions.

"The Emerson-Vieira partnership is the best in circulation and not just in Italy," raved Capello on Saturday.

"Vieira is an important signing, a natural born leader. He will also settle in fairly easily thanks to the other Frenchmen at this club.

"He has great quality, both technically and also as a person. He has matured over these years but he still has a great desire to keep on improving."

Capello, who bossed Vieira for a brief spell at Milan, is more than happy with what his club have achieved on the transfer market so far.

"This is what today’s Juventus is," added the tactician. "We have signed (Robert) Kovac in defence, Vieira and (Giuliano) Giannichedda in midfield and (Adrian) Mutu in attack.

"We are fine as we are, we have got the players we wanted and we are competitive for the new campaign."

Juventus ended the last campaign as champions of Italy but the pressure is now on for them to conquer Europe after such illustrious arrivals.

"I’m not scared by the responsibility," Capello responded. "After all, I prefer to have ‘real champions’ in my squad."

Juventus midfielder Emerson has thanked the club for providing him with the ideal central midfield partner in Patrick Vieira.

The Brazilian was accompanied by various players last term such as Manuele Blasi, Alessio Tacchinardi and Stephen Appiah.

But the former Roma ace will now be aided by the French international following his £14m move from Arsenal.

"I did suffer last year because I had no constant partner in midfield, but now I’ve got one hell of a teammate," he stated.

"Fabio Capello promised me last term that bringing in a world-class midfielder to play by my side was a priority.

"And I honestly don't think I could have asked for anyone better than Patrick Vieira.

"He is a wonderful footballer and I believe most of our European opponents will be scratching their heads now that he is a Juventus player."

Emerson has revealed that he has again received offers from various clubs this summer, but has no intention of quitting the Bianconeri.

He stated: "I feel flattered by the interest in me but why would I want to leave Juventus right now?

"I would really love to win the Champions’ League with this club and I think we have a great chance now that we've signed Vieira."

Juventus boss Capello yesterday insisted that the pairing of Emerson and Vieira was the best in the world.

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero hopes that the new season will bring him Champions’ League glory and a World Cup place.

"I want to win the European Cup," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper. "I also want to convince (Italy boss Marcello) Lippi to take me to the 2006 World Cup Finals."

Alex has lost his way on the international stage, especially after experiencing a difficult first season in Turin under Fabio Capello.

The No 10 was constantly replaced by the tactician and was even dropped from the starting line-up at times.

"Capello and myself are now starting to get to know each other a lot better and I don’t think we’ll have the same problems as last season," he explained.

"Are there too many options in attack? We could make sacrifices and even play with a trident."

Whatever system the Coach opts for, Del Piero is confident that the Old Lady can enjoy another splendid campaign.

"We have strengthened the side again and the arrival of Patrick Vieira is the icing on the cake," he continued.

"We can really win everything over the next 12 months given the conviction we have in our ability.

"Knowing that we have so many options at our disposal will help us to become even stronger."

cummon guys i would not call vieira a defensive player at all!!! patrick vieira had to play a more defensive role at arsenal as he constantly played alongside an attacking midfielder, edu, pires, lungberg, fabregas etc! when you look at vieria's role for arsenal last season he played as their stronghold (guardian) type midfielder - the one making ALL the tackles, breaking up the play, AND ALWAYS THE PLAYER STARTING THE FAMOUS ARSENAL COUNTER ATTACK! he played this role to perfection for 9 years and now at juve we could see the birth of one of the greatest midfield duo's in modern day football, both vieira and emerson there to break up the opposing play, both able to pass the ball to the attacking players with ease and style and with emerson sitting a little bit deeper and vieira powering forward picking out players and staring attacks, looking at that partnership i dont think the question should be "Two DMs? how this will work out", but with two different strong powerful and influential midfielders "how will juve be matched in the middle of the field"

Adrian Mutu says he has already won his first ‘Scudetto’ at Juventus by remaining with the outfit.

The Romanian featured in the champions’ last League game last season following his arrival in January.

But there were rumours suggesting he was netted on a free to then be used as a pawn in this summer’s market, but he has so far remained in Turin.

"My real Scudetto is that of staying at Juventus," said the player who was sacked by Chelsea following his failed drugs test.

"However, the time has now arrived for me to win myself a place in the first team for the new campaign."

That is on paper a tough task for Mutu seeing as the Old Lady have Alex Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcelo Zalayeta on their books.

"I’m not scared by the competition of being up against so many champions here," he continued.

"I am now looking to do my best and I am returning to the physical shape which I was already in at Parma."

The attacker did impress in Juve’s 5-1 win over Pavia on Sunday, but did struggle at times in last night’s Trofeo TIM tournament.

Newly-promoted Ligue 1 side Le Mans claim they are setting up partnerships with European giants Arsenal and Juventus.

Le Mans President Henri Legarda said he wants to give an international dimension to the club.

"We have had a meeting with the Arsenal Coach Arsene Wenger and we have entered negotiations with Juventus," Legarda said. "We should not stay only in France."

Le Mans have already signed one player from Juventus and are trying to snap up another before commencing a top-flight campaign for only the second time in their history.

Swiss starlet Davide Chiumiento, who was on loan at Siena from the Stadio Delle Alpi last term, has already moved to Le Mans, while Luigi Lavecchia is also being linked.

Juventus and Inter have continued their pre-season progress by beating Standard Liege and Bordeaux respectively in summer friendlies.

The Italian champions won in Geneva thanks to a David Trezeguet (pictured) goal after just 11 minutes of the game.

"I’m satisfied with how the side kept the ball and continued to pass it during the match," noted boss Fabio Capello.

Scudetto rivals Inter were also in action, beating Bordeaux 2-1 in the northern Italian town of Bolzano.

The Nerazzurri finished the first half with a one goal advantage after Julio Cruz rippled the net.

Obafemi Martins made it two on 51 minutes, before Vladimir Smicer netted a consolation strike for the French outfit.

"I saw some good things against a side who will start their championship next week," stated boss Roberto Mancini.

Summer signing David Pizarro again impressed, much to the delight of Mancio. "He has extraordinary technical skills," the Coach added.

Champions’ League qualifiers Udinese also faced French opposition last night, drawing 0-0 with Paris Saint-Germain.

“I’m happy I’ve come back to Italy; this Serie A atmosphere excites me a great deal!” Adrian Mutu is psyched up more than ever and willing to get back to play. The Romanian already played with the black&white outfit last year, on the last matchday, on the occasion of the Scudetto celebrations: a taste of the playground that could not but increase his wish to start playing seriously: “I’m working very hard to be able to play a great season. This one must be the year of my comeback. I’m looking forward to get back and play… this is my first aim.”

It couldn’t have been otherwise, after such a long break. It was a hard time, now luckily forgotten: “The road to solve my problems has been tough but I finally made it thanks to my committment and thanks to Juventus, they helped me a lot, having faith in me and supporting me. It’s now time for me to repay the club for their faith in me”.

Alessandro Del Piero has defended his use as a right-sided attacker in Juventus’ pre-season friendlies so far.

Boss Fabio Capello is testing two systems, a standard 4-4-2 with a strike-force of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet, plus a 4-3-3 consisting of Del Piero, Marcelo Zalayeta and Adrian Mutu.

"We are here to try out new things," responded the captain when asked about playing with a trident attack.

"The Coach has so far decided to split Juventus into two, giving us a half each. We’ll see what happens when the season starts…"

However, the Italian media are already speculating that Del Piero’s role in the side is again in question, seeing his omission from the 4-4-2 system – one that will probably be used in the new campaign.

Capello refused to be drawn into any controversy though. "He asked me to try him out on the right, which then allows him to drift into the centre," said the tactician.

"Both Del Piero and Mutu are doing very well. They are working very hard."

The other players in the squad are also happy with the development of the new 4-3-3 formation.

"It can be an extra weapon for us," says Trezeguet. "We want to win everything and it is only right that we try out things now.

"As far as I’m concerned, I have started the season well by scoring goals which have helped with my morale."

Trezeguet netted in the 1-0 win over Standard Liege at the weekend and during the 2-1 defeat to Milan last week.

One player who has embraced the experiment with open arms is Mutu. "I played in the same way at Parma, a role which saw my name recognised across Europe," he stated.

Juventus midfielder Emerson is excited by the prospect of playing alongside Frenchman Patrick Vieira this season.

The Brazilian was accompanied by various players last term such as Manuele Blasi, Alessio Tacchinardi and Stephen Appiah.

But the former Roma ace will now be aided in the heart of the side by the international following his £14m move from Arsenal.

"I have played with some great champions already but I can’t wait to play alongside him," said the South American.

"We have really strengthened the side over the summer, as have Milan, and we are better than we were last season."

Although the Italian champions have significantly improved their midfield, Emerson believes that the side’s best department is their attack.

"Our offensive options can make the difference, especially with David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has greatly matured," he added.

"Can Ibrahimovic win the Golden Ball? He certainly can but not now as he is too young. Perhaps Ronaldinho will win it next."

Winning the Champions’ League is widely seen as the main objective for the Old Lady this term but Emerson insists he wants it all.

"It will be a tough year playing for Lo Scudetto, the Champions’ League and the World Cup," he continued.

"But we don’t want to just focus on one thing at this club. We want to win everything, even including the Coppa Italia. It is our aim to play well and win, a bit like Brazil."

The former Bayer Leverkusen player also said he had no problem with any proposed switch from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3.

"If the Coach wants to play like that then there is nothing to worry about for me," he said. "I’ve already played in a three-man midfield at Roma.

"It does change a few things for the midfield but I’m happy whatever."

Adrian Mutu scored a late goal for Juventus as the champions narrowly beat Cesena 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The Romanian international netted his first goal for the club since his free transfer in January as the Bianconeri continued their friendly programme.

Mutu rippled the net in the 88th minute of a game which few will remember against the Serie B outfit.

Boss Fabio Capello accepted that his side didn’t overly impress but wasn’t exactly surprised by that fact.

"It was a welcome win after working so hard in training over the last few days," commented the Coach.

"It was obvious that we wouldn’t have been able to really play at our best as our legs were very heavy.

"This win is another step towards us finding our best form for the start of the season. These results are not important, the key factor is that everyone gets a chance to play."

Inter and Udinese were also in action last night, collecting wins against Crystal Palace and Cardiff City respectively.

The Nerazzurri won 2-0 thanks to goals from Obafemi Martins on 19 minutes and a 66th minute Giorgios Karagounis strike.

Udinese came out on top as David Di Michele, Damiano Zenoni and Barreto found the scoresheet for Serse Cosmi’s side.

Meanwhile, Juventus have released their squad numbers for the new campaign even if they are still subject to change.

1 Buffon; 2 Birindelli; 3 Chiellini; 4 Vieira; 5 Tudor; 6 Kovac; 7 Pessotto; 8 Emerson; 9 Ibrahimovic; 10 Del Piero; 11 Nedved; 12 Chimenti; 13 Miccoli; 14 Tacchinardi; 16 Camoranesi; 17 Trezeguet; 18 Mutu; 19 Zambrotta; 20 Blasi; 21 Thuram; 22 Bonnefoi; 23 Giannichedda; 24 Olivera; 25 Zalayeta; 27 Zebina; 28 Cannavaro.

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has again underlined that his club are focused on winning the Champions’ League this term.

The tactician has won numerous honours in recent years at Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and now Juventus.

But Capello, regarded as one of the best on the planet, hasn’t tasted a Champions’ League Final for over 10 years – since Milan’s 4-0 destruction of Barcelona.

"We want to reach the final in Paris," said the Coach. "However, that is a desire shared by the other great European clubs.

"Winning the European Cup is a target wanted by the likes of Milan, Inter, Real, Barcelona and Chelsea.

"But you can’t just focus on one objective," he added. "Especially when you take into consideration the squad which is available to you."

Meanwhile, the Old Lady of Italian football continued their pre-season with a 6-2 win over Biellese.

David Trezeguet grabbed a hat-trick, Alex Del Piero netted a brace with one penalty, while Adrian Mutu got the other.

There are also whispers in Turin this morning that star midfielder Emerson wants to extend his contract at the club.

Adrian Mutu insists this will be his year as he finally puts his troubled past at Chelsea behind him to start again with Juventus.

“I am now around 80 per cent of my form and am doing very well physically,” revealed the Romanian. “Psychologically I am also doing great because I feel respected and appreciated here.”

Mutu was set for greatness when he joined Chelsea from Parma in a £15.8m in the summer of 2003, but after a good start his form dipped and he was eventually sacked when failing a routine drugs test.

“I feel confident now because I think I’ve convinced Fabio Capello that he has many options at his disposal. I believe I can be of real use to this team, not just as part of a trident attack, but also as a supporting midfielder.”

The former Verona man returns to his homeland for a friendly game against Timisoara tomorrow evening and is winning over those who thought his career was over.

“I am happy because even the Romanian press, who were quite rough on me, are now printing complementary stories. I really have changed and understood that when you are a public figure there are responsibilities that go through every area of your behaviour,” he added.

“Capello’s advice – that I was great with my feet but had to be smart with my head, too – really helped. My recent marriage also put my life on a more tranquil track and I want people to talk about me only as a footballer. This could be my most important year.”

Nonetheless, the competition for places at the Stadio Delle Alpi is fierce this season and Mutu could find himself on the sidelines.

“If I stayed in Turin, it’s because I believe in my potential. I could’ve accepted loan moves elsewhere, but I have always liked measuring myself up against the best and that’s what Juve represent. My dream for this season is to score 15 goals and with these teammates that’s a definite possibility.”

Adrian Mutu scored on his return to his homeland as Juventus drew 2-2 with Politehnica Timisoara on Wednesday.

The Romanian partnered Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack and both rippled the net during the club’s latest friendly.

Timisoara took the lead in the 23rd minute with Coman as Juve, without David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero, took their time to settle.

Whatever boss Fabio Capello told his troops at half-time definitely worked as they took the lead in the space of four minutes.

Mutu scored in the 47th minute before Ibrahimovic converted a penalty, won after a foul on Jonathan Zebina.

However, the Italian champions failed to collect a win as Paleagu converted an injury-time penalty for the hosts.

"I’m very happy to have returned to playing football in my country," Mutu said after the game. "It was a good match."

Meanwhile, former Juventus stopper Paolo Montero is close to joining a new club after leaving Turin this summer.

The Uruguayan, whose contract expired after nine years at the Delle Alpi, is in talks with Argentine side San Lorenzo.

"I think I can play for a further three seasons," he said. "After so many years in Europe, it is time to return to South America."

Zinedine Zidane has revealed there is "no doubt" that Juventus defender Lillian Thuram will also return to the French national team.

Zidane announced his and Claude Makelele's intention to rejoin Les Bleus on Wednesday, and confirmed on Thursday that fellow veteran Thuram would be following suit.

The former Monaco and Parma right-back memorably catapulted France into the 1998 World Cup Final by scoring both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Croatia - still his only international goals.

However, like Zidane and Makelele, Thuram quit the national team in the wake of harsh criticism following a disappointing Euro 2004 campaign.

Thuram is currently France's second-most capped player having made 103 appearances for Les Bleus, level with former skipper Didier Deschamps and 13 behind record-holder Marcel Desailly.

Just one week away from the Italian Supercup clash with Inter, the Bianconeri could be without Alessandro Birindelli, Giorgio Chiellini and Jonathan Zebina.

Former Fiorentina full-back Chiellini (pictured) lasted only five minutes of last night’s 2-0 friendly win at Benfica, as he was stretchered off with a suspected fractured nose following a collision with Alex.

His replacement was Birindelli and he was also carried away from the pitch after spraining his right knee. More tests are needed to know how long he’ll be out for, but there are reports the ligaments have been damaged.

Zebina did not even fly out to Portugal for this prestigious test due to an injury, while Gianluca Zambrotta was left on the sidelines with a cut to his foot.

Muscular problems have also hit Robert Kovac, while Igor Tudor is thought to be on the verge of a move to Supercup opponents Inter in exchange for Cristiano Zanetti.

This leaves Coach Fabio Capello with precious few alternatives in defence, though Zambrotta is set to recover in time for next Sunday’s showdown at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The situation could further push Juve to move for Miguel, the young defender who is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Benfica. The player insists his contract has expired, but the club maintains there is another year left to run and FIFA are arbitrating on the matter.

“We played a great first half, even if we clearly don’t have full match fitness yet,” said Capello after the 2-0 victory in Lisbon.

“I saw a lot of effort and quality, while tactically are movements are coming together and even Emerson is starting to find his form. It was a tough test and we’ll be ready for the Italian Supercup.”

The Italian Supercup is Serie A’s version of the Charity Shield between Scudetto winners Juventus and Coppa Italia holders Inter.

Juventus have been rocked by the news that Alessandro Birindelli is out for the next six months.

The 30-year-old, who has spent the past few seasons as a back-up player, suffered a knee injury against Benfica on Saturday.

Tests have shown that he has damaged ligaments in his right knee and he will be forced to wear a cast for a fortnight before it can be operated on.

Juventus Coach Fabio Capello (pictured) already has enough injury concerns ahead of the new season, but he would not be drawn into revealing any potential replacements.

“We will have to evaluate the situation before taking any decision,” said the tactician.

The situation could lead to the Bianconeri speeding up their move for Miguel.

The Portuguese defender is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Benfica.

He insists his contract has expired, but the club maintains there is another year left to run and FIFA are arbitrating on the matter.

It has also been reported that David Trezeguet pulled out of training today with an ankle complaint.

Capello will be hoping that it is not serious after the French international missed much of last season through injury.

Juventus striker David Trezeguet is set to miss France's friendly with the Ivory Coast on August 17 after injuring his right ankle.

It is not known exactly how long the 27-year-old will be unavailable for, but it is highly unlikely that Les Bleus boss Raymond Domenech will take the risk.

The former Monaco frontman is suspended for France's upcoming qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Ireland after being sent off during the 1-1 draw with Israel in March, and Domenech is sure to experiment with players he will have at his disposition.

The squad will be announced on Thursday, with former stars Zinedine Zidane, Claude Makelele and Juve stopper Lilian Thuram set to make their return from international retirement.

Juventus’ Alessandro Del Piero looks likely to be included in Italy’s squad for next week’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

The club captain hasn’t appeared for the national side in the past 11 months, but whispers suggest he will be selected for Wednesday’s Dublin test.

Boss Marcello Lippi is understood to have been impressed with Del Piero’s pre-season form, he netted twice against Roma in midweek, and his name is expected to be in Sunday’s squad list.

Del Piero will be eager to prove a point to his former Bianconeri Coach after becoming a fringe player over the last year for his country.

The attacker has only played in one of Lippi’s 12 games in charge, back on September 8 when he netted the only goal of the game in Moldova.

Del Piero has openly admitted that he wants to be a part of the 2006 World Cup squad but he faces a tough battle.

Lippi hasn’t hidden his admiration for the Roma duo of Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti, players who could cost Del Piero his place in Germany.

The tactician is expected to select a ‘strong’ squad for the Ireland game, including Christian Vieri of Milan and Fiorentina’s Luca Toni.

Palermo’s Fabio Grosso should also get the call as Juventus’ reserve left-back Giorgio Chiellini is unavailable after fracturing his nose.

Udinese goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis and shot-stopper Flavio Roma of Monaco are being tipped to join first choice ‘keeper Gigi Buffon on the trip.

Pavel Nedved is fired up ahead of tomorrow’s Trofeo Berlusconi clash with Milan and insists Juve will capture the Champions League this season.

“Of course this match won’t be a friendly and never has been,” he said of the traditional battle at the San Siro. “At this stage of the season, every encounter is an important one and nobody wants to lose.”

Juventus were beaten last night in the Trofeo Moretti, beating Inter 2-0 in the first of three mini-matches of 45 minutes each before missing out to Napoli on a shoot-out.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered an injury during that tournament, but he has recovered from a late challenge by Marco Materazzi and should start on Sunday evening.

“We will see two dream teams go head to head, especially with their spectacular strike forces,” added the Czech midfielder. “As for the Scudetto, we’ll see at the end who is the strongest.”

However, it’s clear that the Bianconeri have set their sights on one particular trophy this term – one that has always escaped Nedved.

“I realise Milan have a real desire to make up for their lost Final against Liverpool, but we absolutely want the Champions League. It’ll take something extraordinary to stop us getting our hands on that trophy. I think Juventus is the best place to be if you want to aim for Europe.”

Yet Nedved could also have the world in his grasp as a return to international duty is on his mind.

"I have never played in a World Cup before and would like to experience it," he revealed. "My Czech teammates and Coach have tried to convince me to return and I will make a decision over the next five days. There are another four qualifying games left and I could play a part."

Juventus boss Fabio Capello is unhappy that the Trofeo Berlusconi defeat has seen him lose Pavel Nedved and Gigi Buffon.

Both players picked up injuries in Sunday’s 2-1 loss during the annual friendly match at the San Siro against hosts Milan.

Nedved seems to have badly twisted his ankle, while the goalkeeper has suffered a potentially serious shoulder problem.

"It’s a real shame that we are losing so many players in this period," said Capello after Mauro Camoranesi also picked up an injury on Friday in the Naples triangular tournament.

"Nedved suffered a nasty blow from Paolo Maldini which could possibly have been avoided. The same could be said for Kaka on Buffon.

"The Berlusconi Trophy is important but at the end of the day it is still a friendly and there could have been a little more caution out there. These frequent injuries are annoying."

The tactician was happy with the performance of his side though, even if their display did nosedive a little after initially taking the lead through Patrick Vieira.

"Ignoring the result, I’m happy with the first half display in which Juventus played with great personality," added the tactician.

"Milan made some smart changes at the break by putting on fresh players and we suffered Serginho on the flanks.

"However, if the result of the game was different then I don’t think there would be too many people moaning."

Capello also said he was satisfied with Adrian Mutu’s display in a wide role after Nedved's substitution. "I thought he did well in a position which is not new to him," he concluded.

Juventus and Italy may be without goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for the next two months because of injury.

The shot-stopper, regarded as the best in the world, suffered a shoulder problem after clashing with Milan’s Kaka during the 2-1 Trofeo Berlusconi defeat last night.

Buffon did seem in some pain and reports on Monday claim that he will be sidelined for at least a month and could be out for as long as eight weeks.

The former Parma No 1 will therefore miss the Italian Super Cup game against Inter on August 20 at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

He’s also likely to miss the start of his club’s Scudetto and Champions League campaigns, even if the outfit have so far not made an official announcement regarding Buffon’s likely comeback date.

Buffon has already been ruled out of Wednesday’s friendly in Ireland and will probably also miss out on the September World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Belarus.

Juventus may now opt to move on the transfer market seeing as they only have Antonio Chimenti as back-up in Turin.

Some whispers suggest that they may sign Milan’s Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos, who could be released for free after the capture of Zeljko Kalac on Friday.

On the international scene, Udinese’s Morgan De Sanctis could be handed the blue jersey for a few months.

However, Monaco’s Flavio Roma, Matteo Guardalben of Palermo and Lazio veteran Angelo Peruzzi are also options.

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has defended new signing Patrick Vieira from criticism that he commits too many fouls.

Moggi, the man responsible for his £14m capture from Arsenal, concedes that the player gets stuck in but maintains that his quality will serve the club well.

"Vieira is a champion," said the transfer guru. "He may have the odd negative but he has so many positives.

"His fouls? Committing fouls is a normal aspect of football but he doesn’t ‘eat’ players.

"He is one of the best central midfield players in Europe and we are counting on him this season.

"Milan let him go when he was a youngster but today he is a champion."

Vieira is taking his time to settle in Turin, but he could form one of the world’s most accomplished central midfield partnerships alongside Emerson in the new campaign.

Moggi was also not surprisingly again asked about a possible move for Antonio Cassano of Roma.

That after Lapo Elkann – heir to the Agnelli empire – said: "Juve want to win everything and in order to do that they need Cassano. We’ll sign him next summer on a free transfer."

Moggi replied: "He was probably just saying that to friends over dinner and it was only his opinion.

"Cassano could be of interest to us but we are already well covered in attack."

Alessandro Del Piero is optimistic for the new season despite Juventus’ defeat to Inter in the Italian Super Cup.

The champions lost 1-0 at home to the Italian Cup winners on Saturday but the Bianconeri captain is remaining upbeat.

"I can’t wait to start the campaign, especially as we have our League title to defend," he told his personal website.

"Despite playing well during the 120 minutes against Inter, the trophy went to the Nerazzurri," he added.

"But there were many positives for us with regard to our play, our physical condition and the amount of chances we created.

"I congratulate Inter for being more concrete than us which allowed them and not us to score the goal.

"However, we were left with the conviction that we put in another good performance."

However, Del Piero didn’t start the game as boss Fabio Capello opted for a 4-4-2 consisting of David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack.

The Italian endured a tough campaign under Capello last term, after he was continually replaced during games and even being dropped from the side altogether.

Pavel Nedved won’t follow the example of Juventus teammate Lilian Thuram by returning to international football.

Both players retired after Euro 2004, but the defender opted to make himself available again to the French national side earlier this month.

The Czech Republic were hoping to tempt Nedved to do the same, but the midfielder has no desire to add to his previous 83 caps.

"Pavel hasn't changed his decision. Pavel will not play international games due to his fitness concerns," Czech boss Karel Bruckner told CTK.

"I spoke with him on Wednesday. He confirmed to me his previous statement that he has given up playing for his country."

The former Golden Ball winner’s agent has also confirmed that Nedved will not appear for his country again – even with the 2006 World Cup Finals on the horizon.

"Pavel considered a return," stated Zdenek Nehoda. "But his decision is final and he hopes that there will be no more speculation on the matter."

The one thing that can be said about his retirment from the Czech NT is that he is wise to do so given his consistency in injuries over the past year and a half. He'll prolong his club playing days, which is where the big $$$ comes for him. He risks injury by playing more, and this last year or so he has been injury prone. That said, I wouldn't rule out a comeback from him if he's feeling fit next May. I think the temptation to play in the World Cup might be too large for him to resist!!

Alessandro Del Piero looks set to start from the bench against Chievo, while Fabio Capello denies asking Antonio Cassano to join Juve.

“Del Piero is one of 25 players at my disposal and will be treated just the same as everyone else,” snapped Capello, clearly weary of the Press attention on this issue.

This will only boost reports that the captain’s time in Turin is over and that he is looking for a move to Milan in order to help his World Cup chances.

It’s expected that the Zlatan Ibrahimovic-David Trezeguet partnership will be the first choice, starting from Sunday night’s meeting with Chievo at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Del Piero’s position could be further complicated if reports that Cassano will make the move up to Turin are to believed.

“It really isn’t my style to ring up players individually,” insisted the former Roma boss. “Cassano is a Giallorossi player and I hope he has a great season for the good of Italian football at large.”

Nonetheless, with the transfer deadline only days away, newspapers in the peninsula continue to maintain there will be a massive swap deal with Adrian Mutu, Giorgio Chiellini and a cash sum in exchange for the fiery Italian international.

If Del Piero is to sit on the bench, then Christian Abbiati steps into the limelight for his first Serie A match for Juve following his arrival on loan from Milan – a form of apology for indirectly causing Gianluigi Buffon’s shoulder injury.

“Abbiati is a goalkeeper who is worthy of a place in the Italy side,” insisted Capello. “Juve represent an important opportunity for him and he came here with great character and motivation.”

The Bianconeri are looking to the future and have signed young Brazilian central defender Gladstone Pereira della Valentina. The 20-year-old arrives on loan from Cruzeiro at a cost of £100,000 with an option to buy at the end of the season for £1.3m.

I am happy with todays game as Juve were very strong in midfield and in defense. The thing i didn't like is that Ibrahimovic became too edgy and such early popularity is making him arrogant, although he was right with the Trezeguet incident. However, i think that being so tense throughout the whole match made him perform worse, especially second half. I am sure there are factors such as Inter winning 3-0 as well which caused the whole team to get a little moody. Anyhow, i believe that they have a high self esteem this season and this is only the beginning.

One thing i dind't get is why he didn't put in Del Piero considering that he warmed u for most of thep second half. I think he is going to get Cassano.

First of all, I think about Juventus as a "bootcamp" any player who disrupts the team in anyway gets benched and that's why Del Piero was on the bench.

Second of all yes you're right Cassano is coming to Juventus, if not he isn't staying in Roma for long.

The season begins with a win for the Bianconeri, who win Chievo at the Delle Alpi in the late match of the season 2005-2006 first match. The match was dominated by Capello’s side and decided on 36 minutes by Trezeguet’s header. In comparison with the line-up who played the Supercoppa last Saturday, Thuram comes back, after recovery, and Abbiati makes his debut on his first official match in the black&white outfit.
After 6 minutes Capello must replace Zebina with Pessotto for injury. The Bianconeri attack from the very start of the game, with Trezeguet pressing Fontana after 9 minutes and after 11 his header ends wide of the net. On 14’ minutes Ibrahimovic’s attempt on goal is cleared and then deflected into the corner. Chievo push forward on 12’ minutes with Pellisier trying a shot on goal from the edge of the box. Juventus look for the goal persistently with Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet, who tries to worry Fontana on 31’ minutes. On 34’ minutes it’s still the Frenchman who gets dangerous and, assisted by Ibrahimovic, his shot on the turn ends slightly out of target. The deserved goal by Trezeguet comes two minutes later when the Bianconero forward gets Zambrotta’s cross pass and nods it in (1-0).
In the second half, Juventus easily manage their lead and look for a double score at the start of the half time with a fine pass between Vieira and Cannavaro but in front of the goal Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic hamper each other; then on 14 minutes Camoranesi attempts on goal with a left-footed shot from the edge of the box and on 20’ minutes with a header but Malagò clears on the line and again on 25’ minutes from the edge of the area, which is deflected into the corner.

Capello's Words

Fabio Capello is satisfied with the victory against Chievo and he commented his lads’ performance: “I’m happy with how we played tonight. We created many chances, certainly I have been worried until the final whistle about the fact that we were not making the most of our chances, because Chievo never gave up and pressed on every ball. In the second half we tried to make our opponents expose but they did not. It’s a shame we could not make the most of certain shots in front of the goal. As a whole it was a good performance against a side who, as I had said before the match, were the hardest.”

Adrian Mutu has revealed his intention of breaking up the David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic partnership in the Juventus side.

The duo seem to be boss Fabio Capello’s preferred attacking pairing right now, but the Chelsea flop has his eyes on changing his tactical mind.

"Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic are the first choices but I am working hard with the objective of finding a little space myself," he stated.

The Romanian, dropped to the stands in Week 1, reminded the Coach of his ability with a brace against the Czech Republic on Saturday.

"I’m happy to have netted twice but let us not talk about sending specific messages to Capello," he added.

"I am simply doing all that I can to make sure that I am ready when I am called upon to play. I’m feeling in good shape now."

Mutu could feature against Empoli on Sunday, especially as the under-fire Alessandro Del Piero is injured.

"Alex is an example for all of us," continued the former Parma ace. "He works hard in training without ever speaking out.

"Myself, Del Piero and Marcelo Zalayeta train in order to be called upon when the moment is right.

"Being regarded as a champion requires players to accept a place on the bench and therefore the Coach’s decisions."

Meanwhile, Del Piero is again being linked with a move to Milan after Luciano Moggi met with Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday.

The Juventus director general held surprise talks with the Milan patron at the Palazzo Grazioli.

Moggi refused to speak to reporters following the chat, but whispers are already suggesting that Del Piero’s future could have been discussed

Juventus boss Fabio Capello is being tipped to rest Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Sunday’s trip to Empoli.

Although the Swede is in great form, following his two goals on international duty in the past week, there are concerns over his health.

The former Ajax player complained of severe stomach pains, which subsequently hampered his breathing, after Sweden’s win over Hungary in midweek.

Ibrahimovic insisted that he was fine following his superb injury time strike, but Capello may opt to rest him anyway.

The tactician is expected to start the striking sensation on the bench despite his importance to the side.

Given that Alessandro Del Piero is currently injured, Capello will probably select David Trezeguet and Adrian Mutu in attack.

The Romanian is in good form himself after he returned to training this week following his two goals for his national side.

Ibrahimovic should be recalled to the starting line-up for Wednesday’s Champions League tie at Club Brugge.

Meanwhile, Inter boss Roberto Mancini is believed to be thinking of resting Adriano for their trip to Palermo on Saturday evening.

The last time Empoli were in Serie A during the 2003-04 season they shocked the peninsula by holding Juventus to a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Stadio Carlo Castellani. The Azzurri will be hoping that once again their home advantage will prove so decisive after their defeat to Udinese. While Juventus were hardly spectacular against Chievo they did all that was needed and will expect another win from this encounter.

Empoli will change to a more defensive 4-2-3-1 formation in an effort to control Juve’s formidable forward line. Nicola Ascoli and Emanuel Michelotti are both still injured which means that the only change in defence comes as Stefano Lucchini is sacrificed to accommodate Francesco Lodi, as Antonio Buscè moves to right-back. Francesco Tavano will shift to the right wing and Mirco Gasparetto is surprisingly chosen as the lone striker, despite the signing of Christian Riganò.

Juventus will make only one change to the side that cruised to victory over Chievo. This comes as Jonathan Zebina joins long-term patients Gianluigi Buffon and Alessandro Birindelli in the treatment room. The French defender suffered a recurrence of last season’s muscular injury in the early stages against the Gialloblu and is likely to miss the visit to Empoli. He will be replaced by Gianluca Pessotto, the same person who came on as a substitute to replace him in Week 1. David Trezeguet continues to partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic up-front, so Alex Del Piero will have to be content with a place on the bench – if he recovers from injury in time.

Empoli (probable): Berti; Buscè, Coda, Vanigli, Bonetto; Ficini, Almiron; Lodi, Vannucchi, Tavano; Gasparetto

Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Pessotto, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic

Fabio Capello faces a defensive conundrum against Empoli, as Lilian Thuram and Jonathan Zebina are out of action.

“Thuram’s injury is more serious than we had originally thought,” revealed the Juventus Coach ahead of the trip to Empoli. “He has a bruise on the thigh muscle that is not being absorbed as quickly as expected.”

This is set to cause further controversy for the Bianconeri, as Capello had already complained about Thuram’s decision to come out of international retirement.

Since returning to the France squad, the former Parma defender has already picked up two injuries and was played against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday night despite suffering from the thigh problem.

“Zebina is also not going to be fit for the Empoli game,” explained the tactician. “He could potentially have played, but I would prefer to rest him so that he can be on form to face Club Brugge on Wednesday.”

The club vs. country row has already flared up between Inter and Brazil over Adriano, but Capello was at least thankful to have two stars at his disposal this week.

“I’m glad that David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved did not go off on international duty. They were able to train and improve their overall fitness levels, which you’ll be able to see in their performance this weekend.”

Alessandro Del Piero is also sidelined with a muscular injury that ruled him out of Italy’s 4-1 win over Belarus and the Juve doctors have already stated he won’t be ready for the Champions League opener, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a major doubt with a stomach problem.

Gianluigi Buffon and Alessandro Birindelli are long-term absentees, so Capello must reshuffle his squad at the Stadio Castellani.

“I scored two important goals, probably more important to my International team than to me; after all, I simply did my job. Certainly, netting twice is always good for the mood.”

Adrian Mutu has been one of the protagonists of Germany 2006’s latest qualifications, giving his Romania the win against the Czech Republic; a reassuring sign for coach Capello in view of the match against Empoli on Sunday and the Champions League debut on Wednesday: “Yes, I think I’ve sent a message to the Coach, in a positive sense of course: I’m working well in training and I want to be ready when I’m called upon to play. To be in a top club like Juventus you have to accept the coach’s decisions and I do so without any problem. Maybe in the old days I would take certain decisions differently but I have now realized that if you want to be a champion you have to work for the team’s sake too. I’m feeling good and I’m taking everything with peace of mind and joy; after a long break it’s good to be at the coach’s disposal again, to compete to be part of the first-choice team, to play for the International team… I’m myself again and I’m happy about that.”

Adrian now looks at the challenge against Empoli: “In the last few days, many of us have played with their respective International teams, but there’s no risk we’re relaxing this Sunday. We’re professionals and no matter if the opponent in charge goes under the name of Empoli or Milan as we’ll have to work hard and do our utmost to win. After all, we’ve always respected any opponent we’ve met, facing every match with great determination. This is our strength.”

JUVENTUS 4-0 EMPOLI Match Report

A perfect Juventus took Empoli by storm with three goals in six minutes’ time into the first half and got the four-of-a-kind in the second half time. A 4-0 resulting from a brilliant and concentrated play. Trezeguet scored a double goal which takes him to 99 goals wearing the black&white outfit, Camoranesi scored his second goal in the week after that for Italy, Vieira, after a fantastic performance, scored his first goal in the championship.
Capello’s side is in search of the three points from the very beginning of the match. Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet, helped by Nedved and Camoranesi, keep constant pressure on the Tuscan defence, Emerson and Vieira dominate in the midfield, the four-men defence formed by Pessotto, today’s captain, Cannavaro, Kovac, on his debut, and Zambrotta keep good guard of Abbiati’s net. The first goal for the Bianconeri comes on 11’ minutes: Vieira serves Ibrahimovic from the the midfield and the latter assists Trezeguet who puts it in with a powerful right-footed shot from the edge of the box (0-1). The score is doubled on 14’ minutes: a corner kick by Nedved is followed by Vieira who nods the ball in, scoring his first goal in Serie A with the Juventus oufit. On 16’ minutes, the 0-3 goal is signed by Camoranesi who, after his first goal for the International team, follows suit in the black&white outfit: starting from the midfield, he dribbles an opponent, moves forward and goes for a shot on goal which, deflected by Coda, ends in. Empoli’s reaction in the mid-half time brings forth only one attempt on goal by Almiron (23’) and Riganò’s header (29’), both missing the target. It’s hard to trouble such Juventus, who delight their supporters with classy play, like that on 28’ minutes resulting from the Nedved-Trezeguet-Ibrahimovic partnership and also the fantastic spurt of Vieira’s, who is eventually stopped by an opponent’s foul.
The second half starts with Balzaretti replacing Pessotto. Empoli get dangerous on 8’ minutes with Riganò but Juventus easily control the game. After 5 minutes, Ibrahimovic gets close to the fourth goal but Lodi clears the Swede’s header on the line. The four-of-a-kind for Juventus comes on 16’ minutes: Abbiati’s long kickout is received by Nedved who then serves Trezeguet and the latter’s volley beats Berti (0-4). The French striker, who is later replaced by Zalayeta due to a muscular problem to his right thigh, reaches 99 goals scored in the black&white outfit. In the last minutes of the match, Mutu, who substituted Ibrahimovic, Nedved and Zalayeta all look for the goal, while Abbiati puts up a good show with a beautiful clearance of Gasparetto’s attempt on goal.

I had seen the same spirit also during the week and it’s very good to see it confirmed in the match.” Fabio Capello has fielded a perfect Juventus: a solid defence, an authoritative midfield, a relentless attack, with Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet to form an exceptional partnership: “They did play a good match; however, we must not forget that Juventus have five forwards and that everyone will have their place as it’s a long way to the end of the championship. It will be important to play always with the same determination as we had today: also when you’re leading 3-0 you don’t have to relax because you may allow the opponents to hit back and most of all because getting the lost concentration back is always hard.”

Juve have arguably the strongest midfield partnership in the world right now and Emerson believes his rapport with Patrick Vieira can still improve.

“Compared to a year ago this team is more confident, aware of its abilities and playing better football,” said the Brazilian after earning three consecutive wins in Serie A and the Champions League.

“At the start of last season we were struggling more, but now we are in control and creating a lot of scoring opportunities.”

The Bianconeri aimed over 23 shots on goal against Club Brugge on Wednesday night, but still only scraped a 2-1 victory in Belgium. It was also a disappointing evening, as former Arsenal hero Vieira received a red card on his European debut with the club.

“Playing alongside a champion like Vieira can only make me happy and, despite what some said before the season started, we do not tread on each others’ toes. I stay a little further behind and Patrick is in a more advanced role. What counts is that we are beginning to understand each other and that can only help the team.”

Juve are at the centre of a club vs. country row, as Fabio Capello has made it clear he is unhappy with Lilian Thuram’s decision to come out of international retirement.

“You cannot say no to your country, even if the clubs have their reasons for complaining,” pointed out Emerson. “Playing for Brazil is not a problem for me, as I am accustomed to flying 15 hours just to wear the Seleçao jersey.”

Meanwhile, Juventus patron Lapo Elkann has sent a letter to newspaper 'Il Giornale' denying he made disparaging comments about Alessandro Del Piero. The heir to the Agnelli business empire was quoted as saying the captain was, "an expensive luxury we can no longer afford."

Fabio Capello has hinted at a starting spot for Alessandro Del Piero against Ascoli tomorrow afternoon in a new trident attack with Adrian Mutu.

“Juventus are in good condition,” assured the Coach after three consecutive wins between Serie A and the Champions League.

“Psychologically we are also doing well and want to continue along the path we have set out on this season. It’s a wonderful journey, but a difficult one, and the efforts of everyone in training have been impressive.”

Much has been said on the future of Del Piero, although patron Lapo Elkann later insisted he had not called the captain, “an expensive luxury we can no longer afford.” With reports of a move to Japan, the Premiership or even their rivals Milan, it might be time for Capello to give him another chance.

“Del Piero is in great form during training and very relaxed. I can assure you that controversy only fires him up to do better.”

During the summer the Bianconeri tested out a trident attack and could employ that system against newly promoted Ascoli, who are still unbeaten in Serie A despite facing Milan and Lecce.

David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be rested in favour of Del Piero, Mutu and Marcelo Zalayeta, although the Frenchman could stay on considering his good form of late.

Some of the top stars are set to be rested, as Juventus face a difficult test on Wednesday against joint Serie A leaders Udinese.

"We have four games in the next nine days, so I am thinking about rotating the squad. Our great strength is that we have so many quality players who are eager to work for the collective."

Capello must also make another difficult decision, as Gianluca Pessotto is still injured, so he can choose between Jonathan Zebina and Manuele Blasi for the right-back role. Midfielder Blasi took that position with some success in the 2-1 Champions League win over Club Brugge midweek.

Juventus will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent record when they take on one of the Serie A new boys. On paper this should not even be a contest, but this is Serie A and anything can happen. Despite hammering another of the newcomers Empoli in Week 2, the Old Lady’s next opponents should offer more of a test. Just ask Milan if Ascoli are the non-entity that most predicted they would be.

Much of the pre-match talk for the Turin-based Bianconeri has focused on their problems at the back. They might not have conceded a goal in their opening two matches, but that could be about to change. They are woefully short of numbers, with Lilian Thuram, Alessandro Birindelli and Gianluca Pessotto all likely to be missing. The injury to Thuram was particularly hard to stomach for Coach Fabio Capello, as it came about on international duty. Alex Del Piero may have shaken off a thigh injury but the club captain is likely to settle for a place on the bench once again.

Meanwhile, the Stadio Del Duca outfit have had a promising start to the campaign with consecutive draws against Milan and Lecce. Coach Marco Giampaolo is taking to Serie A like a duck to water – literally, in the case of the game against the Rossoneri – and is unlikely to make any unnecessary changes to his team. However, he is forced to make one switch. Vittorio Tosto was dismissed last weekend, so he will be replaced in defence by Gianluca Comotto, who makes his debut after signing from Torino.

Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Zebina, Kovac, F Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Del Vieira, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic

Ascoli (probable): Coppola; Carbone, Cudini, Domizzi, Comotto; Foggia, Cristiano, Parola, Fini; Quagliarella, Ferrante

‘In the first half hour we suffered Ascoli’s aggressiveness and dynamic; after the draw we woke up and directed the game. Through the restart it was a better going: we didn’t take risks and created three clear cuts.’ Fabio Capello expected a tough match against Ascoli, both for the Cup’s tiredness and the character of the Marches team: ‘I expected such an Ascoli and warned my players. Obviously I wasn’t understood, because in the first half they created troubles. Naturally the Cup’s commitment took its toll, in fact I believe the other teams that played throughout Europe lacked some freshness.’ Man of the day was Alex Del Piero, who, scoring double, fully met Capello’s estimate: ‘I told he was in great shape and I think I wasn’t wrong. He’s an important player for us.’
The last thought of the Bianconeri’s manager is for the shocking defeat of A.C. Milan in Genoa allowing Juventus a five points margin in the table over the Rossoneri: ‘We must consider that they played away twice, something we will do at Udine and Parma. Everybody talked about how three teams were stronger than the rest, but actually there are at least five, six line-ups capable of giving troubles to every opponent.’

Juventus boss Fabio Capello insists he knew that Alex Del Piero would make the telling difference against Ascoli.

The No 10 played in his first Serie A match of the season, scoring both goals in a hard fought victory.

"I was expecting him to do well," stated the tactician who hasn’t been afraid of dropping Del Piero from the line-up in the past.

"Alex allowed us to win the game, but I had already said that he was looking really good in training.

"He has been simply extraordinary over the last few weeks. He’s not played but has conducted himself in an exemplary manner."

The Italian international has had a tough time of it in Turin since Capello’s arrival, but he concedes he has to accept the Coach’s decisions.

"I have conducted myself in this manner because I am the captain of this team," explained the fan favourite.

"I am always serene and if there are problems then they are only discussed within the squad itself."

Del Piero’s brace, which included his first free-kick strike for two years, allowed him to move on to 172 goals for the Bianconeri.

"I’m very happy with my performance as I basically hadn’t played for a month," continued Del Piero.

"It wasn’t an easy game for us at all, especially as we were not as brilliant as we usually are.

"But nothing changes for me. I will now start again with training and the hard work which I have always done."

Fabio Capello has warned his Juventus side that they will have to be at their best to win at Udinese on Wednesday.

The Stadio Friuli outfit, despite their 4-2 loss at Fiorentina on Sunday, have been a revelation so far this term and Capello is wary of the threat.

"There is presently great euphoria in Udine, they feel strong and are convinced of their own ability," stated the tactician.

"They are right to have such emotions because Udinese are a good squad and we must play with the greatest amount of attention.

"It will be tough against Udinese because they are a well organised side, dangerous in attack where they have fast and quality individuals. They have a very strong midfield too.

"They also have some good youngsters like Vincenzo Iaquinta, a player who I wanted when I was at Roma."

The reigning champions have had a relatively easy run of things in Serie A so far this term, but Udinese should provide them with their first real test of the campaign.

"In reality, all games are exams for us," added the tactician.

"The fact that we are the only team with maximum points after just three games shows how difficult this championship is for everyone, especially at this point of the season.

"Although the big three – Juventus, Milan and Inter – have strengthened, the others did too in the summer.

"Palermo, Udinese, Sampdoria, Fiorentina and Roma are realities of the game now. It will be hard for us to ‘run’ as we did last season."

Nevertheless, Capello is optimistic about his club’s chances of success during the 2005-06 campaign.

"We were strong last year and we knew it, but we are now even more convinced of our strength," he argued.

"Everyone here occupies an important role in the side and everyone is working hard to carry the water to the same mill. That is what allows us to target certain objectives."

It’s unclear at this stage what sort of line-up Juve will start with, but there are whispers which suggest Alex Del Piero could be relegated to the bench despite his brace against Ascoli.

Udinese have lost on form hitman Vincenzo Iaquinta for Wednesday’s crunch match with Serie A leaders Juventus.

The Italian international was expected to star at the Stadio Friuli tomorrow evening after scoring a hat-trick in his Champions League debut against Panathinaikos and netting in the 4-2 defeat at Fiorentina.

However, Iaquinta has been laid low with flu symptoms and was not well enough to feature, so he is not even going to sit on the bench.

Fausto Rossini is an option to take the centre-forward role, or Coach Serse Cosmi could change his tactics with a pacier trio of David Di Michele, Antonio Di Natale and Barreto upfront.

“Juventus are the least likely team to help solve our problems, but we’ll give it a go,” said Cosmi following the loss at the Stadio Artemio Franchi this weekend.

“You create victories by reacting to defeats. We have learned our lesson in Florence and now all we must do is roll up our sleeves and prove it.”

Meanwhile, Udinese will see two of their upcoming Serie A games brought forward. They’ll welcome Lazio to the Stadio Friuli on Saturday October 1 and travel to Siena on October 15. In Week 6, Chievo-Treviso will be the 6pm local time kick-off on the Saturday and the Derby d’Italia is the big Sunday evening clash.

For Week 7, Juventus take on Messina for the Saturday evening tie and Cagliari host Milan on Sunday night.

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has dismissed claims that rival Scudetto candidates Milan are in crisis.

The Rossoneri have endured a sluggish start to the League season, collecting just four points from three games.

But Capello, whose side are already five points ahead of the San Siro outfit, has backed them to bounce back.

"I don’t think they are in crisis," commented the former Milan boss. "The championship is a long one and I know what they can do. Everyone can have a false start."

Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost to Sampdoria on Sunday and already have the chance to get back on track against Lazio this evening.

"We are only at the beginning of the campaign, that is why I don’t think they are in difficulty," continued Capello.

"Milan have enormous potential as a team and are backed up by a solid club. I’m certain that they will re-find their touch and soon be back to their very best."

Milan have looked like a distant cousin of the side who amazed at times lack season, with their defence seeming particularly vulnerable this term.

However, Alessandro Nesta is looking to silence the critics with a fine display against his former club.

"It will be important to beat Lazio and to do so without conceding a goal," said the Azzurri stopper.

"We are working hard to achieve that aim. If that occurs then I’m sure it will be easy for us to get back on the right path."

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has conceded that his side were fortunate to beat Udinese on Wednesday.

The Bianconeri collected a 1-0 away win to maintain their 100 per cent record, but the tactician has accepted that was probably the wrong result.

"It was a combative game against an excellent side," stated the Coach. "We did well in the first half, but Udinese deserved to equalise after the break."

The League leaders netted thanks to a well worked goal that was concluded by summer signing Patrick Vieira.

But they had to thank Robert Kovac for a goal-line clearance, as well as a Christian Abbiati miracle save which did have a hint of fortune to it.

"I was happy with the midfield," added Capello, who decided to initially rest Mauro Camoranesi in favour of Giuliano Giannichedda.

"Abbiati made a great save too. I was also content with Manuele Blasi at right-back. He is now convinced of his abilities in that position."

Udinese boss Serse Cosmi was disappointed with the result as he agreed that his side merited at least a point.

"We just couldn’t manage to get the ball into the back of the net," commented the former Perugia man.

"It was a well balanced game in the first period, while Juventus were dangerous for just five minutes in the second."

The Udine club were without contract rebel Vincenzo Iaquinta, but Cosmi was happy with his replacement. "Fausto Rossini proved to be an important terminal for us," he concluded.

Five weeks into the Italian League season and the cream has already risen to the top. The mighty Juventus head the table after a perfect start to their campaign with four wins from four. They are now as short as 6/5 to win back-to-back Scudetti.

Fabio Capello's side showed 'Chelsea' form in midweek. They struggled against Udinese but still came through 1-0 with a goal from former Arsenal talisman Patrick Vieira. This weekend they face a trip to Parma for what looks on paper a difficult fixture.

Parma are unbeaten at home this season, but punters on the Channel 4 Betting Exchange give them no chance against the champions at 5-1. The perils of backing odds-on aways in Italy have been clear since Week 1, but that won't deter Juve backers at 4/6, with the draw 11/5.

Milan fans breathed a huge sigh of relief on Wednesday evening after their 2-0 victory followed a disappointing loss at the weekend. The Rossoneri are 5/2 second favourites to wrestle the championship from Turin and backers will be hoping that the victory over Lazio can kick-start their campaign.

They travel to basement boys Treviso at the weekend as red-hot 1/3 favourites, but before you go steaming into the big odds-on, remember that Milan have already slipped up against Sampdoria and Ascoli this term. Treviso are 10/1 to register their first victory of the season, with the draw available at 10/3.

The match of the weekend is without doubt the clash at the San Siro between Inter and Fiorentina. The Viola have been the surprise packages of the season so far and take their unbeaten record to Milan for their toughest assignment of the campaign.

Fiorentina odds have plummeted from 500/1 to 80/1 to win the title this season - small wonder given they are currently sitting pretty in second place. Inter are finally showing some solid form and are turning games that last season would have ended in stalemates into victories.

In midweek they won 1-0 at Chievo and last weekend hammered Lecce 3-0. Roberto Mancini's men, like their Milan rivals, are quoted at 5-2 for the championship. At 8/13 to beat Fiorentina, they could be one of the bets of the weekend on the Exchange. Fiorentina are 5/1 to pull-off a minor shock with the draw at 12/5.

France Coach Raymond Domenech agrees with Juventus boss Fabio Capello that players are being asked to play too many matches.

Domenech was responding to declarations made by the Italian tactician when Lillian Thuram returned to his club injured after playing for Les Bleus.

"Capello made the same point that we’re all making," said Domenech. "There are too many matches for the international players.

"We need to find a maximum number of games that a player is allowed to play.

"For a start, they shouldn’t be appearing in more games than there are weeks in the year."

However, whereas Capello called for the national federations to compensate the clubs when players are unavailable as a result of international duty, Domenech claimed he was missing the point.

"Instead of talking about money, we should be working together to find solutions to the calendar overcrowding," said the Frenchman.

"The internationals mustn’t be asked to play 70 games a season.

"With pre-season tournaments, we increase the number of games because the clubs want to earn more money and it’s the players that pay for it in the end."

Parma - Juventus
Stadio Tardini

This game could provide one of the most interesting comparisons of the season as Paolo Cannavaro lines up against his older brother Fabio. Paolo is regarded as a promising young defender by Parma and this could prove to be a great opportunity to see if he shows the potential to emulate the Azzurri captain’s huge success. This will be a big game for both brothers though as Juventus’ injury crisis continues to pile pressure on to the elder Cannavaro’s shoulder. With such influential players as Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram still absent he has had to take on a lot of added responsibility.

The Gialloblu have their own injury problems though as their 4-1 midweek thrashing to Roma showed. With Daniele Bonera, Marco Marchionni and Domenico Morfeo all out, they are missing – with the exception of the now departed Alberto Gilardino – their three best performers from last season. While the Parma tifosi will be hoping that having such an array of talent waiting to return to the side will push their replacements on to a good performance to keep their place in the team, this could be a tall order against a Bianconeri side who have won all four games so far this season.

One player hoping to impress while looking over his shoulder for his injured teammate is Marco Delvecchio. The former Roma striker has been given a chance to resurrect his career due to the absence of Morfeo and will need to take it with both hands. Similarly both David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will need to do well with the competition for places in Turin if, as expected, they start ahead of Alex Del Piero and Adrian Mutu. This especially true after Del Piero’s explosive return to the first team last week when he scored both goals against Ascoli.

Parma (probable): Lupatelli; P Cannavaro, Cardone, Contini, Pasquale; Pisanu, Bolano, Simplicio, Bresciano; Delvecchio, Corradi

Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Blasi, Kovac, F Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic

Fifth wins out of five matches played by Juventus who beat Parma 2-1 at Tardini on the fifth week’s early match. The Bianconeri lead the game during the whole match, although it’s the home side who are first to take the lead on 14’ minutes with Delvecchio. Camoranesi earn the draw and Vieira scores the winning goal.

Turnover at Parma for Capello’s side. Emerson and Nedved are at rest and are substituted respectively by Giannichedda and Mutu. In attack Capello lines up the new Trezeguet-Zalayeta partnership. Italy’s champions set up the game but it’s Parma who take the lead on their first attack. It’s 14’ minutes when Bresciano crosses to Corradi who passes back to Delvecchio and the latter nods it in (1-0). The Bianconeri, before Parma’s advantage, had attacked with Zalayeta, whose fine pass both Trezeguet and Camoranesi got anticipated on (7’) and then with the Frenchman’s attempt on goal which had ended high over the crossbar (10’). They insist with Camoranesi who heads the ball over the crossbar (16’ minutes) and engages the goalkeeper from the distance with a central shot (25’), while Mutu shoots a couple of free kicks from the edge of the box which are both hit back. Parma get dangerous on 28’ minutes with Morfeo’s free kick deflected on the goalline and on 39’ minutes with Simplicio’s shot on goal cleared by Abbiati. Juventus earn a draw one minute before the end of the first half: Vieira serves Camoranesi and the latter’s fantastic right-footed shot beats Lupatelli (1-1).

During the break, Capello replaces Giannichedda with Emerson and also Zalayeta with Ibrahimovic and Mutu with Nedved. The second half’s tempo is faster. At the start, Abbiati is worried by Delvecchio and Bresciano, then it’s the Bianconeri’s turn to attack with Mutu first, whose shot ends high over the crossbar (8’) and then with Camoranesi, whose shot on goal is finally cleared (12’). On 19’ minutes, Vieira passes to Ibrahimovic but his cross for Trezeguet misses the target. On 27’ minutes, Bresciano puts the ball in and Pisano’s attempt on goal is wide of target. On 29’ minutes, Juventus get close to scoring when Nedved’s shot is intercepted by Trezeguet who is eventually anticipated by Contini in front of the net. On 35’ minutes it’s another scoring occasion for Juventus: Zambrotta crosses for Camoranesi who misses the post for little. Two minutes later and it’s time for the deserved advantage, signed by Vieira, who’s at his third goal in five matches: the Frenchman starts the action, assists Ibrahimovic then moves forward to receive the cross shot from the Swede and nods it in. It’s 2-1.

CAPELLO'S WORDS
-------------------------------------
Capello: “Fantastic second half”

Fabio Capello is satisfied. On the day of his 600th bench in Serie A, the Bianconeri’s coach praises his squad for the fifth win out of five matches in the championship. Here is his comment after Parma vs Juventus: “Parma played with a frenzied tempo and it’s no surprise that they paid for that in the second half, they could not keep that pace for the whole match. And this is what I told the lads during the break, and then I made my substitutions lining up the fresher players and it paid. We played a great first half too but we were too slow at attacking, keeping the ball too long. During the break I told them to go deeper along vertical lines and in fact this gave Parma some problems. I’m satisfied: the team played the first half with determination on every ball, always in attack, with Parma on the defence and they played a great second half creating many scoring occasions.”
