The legacy of winning Euro 2004
By Paul Fletcher
Greece win Euro 2004
In Aesop's fable The Crow and the Water Jug, the Greek philosopher teaches us that with enough planning it is possible to achieve what at first seemed impossible.
Exactly one year ago, on a warm summer's evening in Lisbon, a seemingly impossible fairytale became reality.
Greece defied the experts, the odds and accepted football logic to lift the Euro 2004 trophy after a 1-0 win over hosts Portugal in the final.
Otto Rehhagel's 150-1 outsiders defeated Portugal twice, the Czech Republic, holders France and drew with Spain during four heady weeks that stunned European's elite.
Greece, superbly organised by German coach Rehhagel, won their three games in the knockout phases 1-0, stifling their esteemed opponents.
Leicester reject Theodoros Zagarakis emerged as Uefa's player of the tournament, while the likes of defender Traianos Dellas and striker Angelos Charisteas emerged as players of real quality.
Some called it a triumph of negative football over the beautiful game, others a much-needed victory for the little man at a time when the gulf between big and small only seems to widen.
But as the Greek squad arrived back in Athens after the final, celebration - and not analysis - was the order of the day.
"Our victory helps the smaller teams all around the world"
Stelios Giannakopolous
"It was the greatest day by far in the history of Greek football and the greatest for me," Greece midfielder Stelios Giannakopolous told BBC Sport.
"In every country if you can win such a thing you will be a national hero the next day. The same happened with us.
"We achieved something that nobody ever dreamed about and directly we had the Olympic games back in their home country, so it was a celebration for Greeks all over the world."
The Greek national team had not won a game in a major finals before Euro 2004 but Bolton forward Giannakopoulos hoped the victory in Portugal would mark the start of a golden period.
Alas one year since their night of triumph at the Stadium of Light, 33-year-old Giannakopoulos remains unconvinced.
"Nothing brilliant has happened," he said. "I had hoped after Euro 2004 that things would be better but that has not happened.
Giannakopoulos celebrates his team's victory back in Greece
"The hope is that a lot of kids will take our victory as an example that they can follow in the future but if the situation in Greece does not change it is going to be difficult.
"The championship in Greece, with so many of the national squad playing abroad, is not very good."
A recent defeat at home to Ukraine in a crucial World Cup qualifier leaves Rehhagel's team struggling to reach the World Cup finals in Germany next summer.
But even if Greece never reach the dizzy heights they scaled last summer what they achieved stands as a lasting inspiration for unfancied teams the world over.
"The right players came together at the right time and in the right place and we had the right coach," added Giannakopoulos.
"Our victory helps the smaller teams all around the world to believe they can achieve something better.
"If they believe in team spirit they can achieve a lot of things."

Oh not this again...I'll bet in 20 years when greece is like #60 in the world again you will still be saying this Euro crap. A suitcase of Euros can even make San Marino Euro Champions. I still can't imagine how you qualified, let alone won???!!??! How corrupted soccer has become. The cheap gypsi nations are going to the top while the hard working, true soccer nations are being defeated. The day Greece wins another Euro is the day elephants fly.

You are angry because you are a jealous, spiteful little man and if you havent noticed this is a GREEK FORUM and if we want to boast for the next 100 years we will and the best thing will be that we will annoy peasants like you and what makes you more angry is that you know bulgarians lack the strength and determination [COLOR=Black]to ever claim a prize like the EURO, you have to settle for the regional cup what a joke you are!!

So what if Greece never does anything ever again? A Cup talk very loud. We will always cherish it:
Greece - One Year On From Lisbon
They surprised the world last year en route to the most shocking of European Championship wins. But, one year later Greece once again are returning to their role as longshots. Goal.com’s George Tsitsonis reports on Greek football and Otto’s boys a year after that unbelievable Euro 2004 success…
How Sweet It Was
When Angelos Charisteas sent the ball into the back of the net with his “golden head” during the Euro 2004 final against Portugal, Greeks across the world jumped and probably stayed in the air for a quite a long time. So when Markus Merk blew the final whistle that 4th of July it was no wonder why so many joyous Greeks expressed their happiness and said that it felt like they were flying. For supporters of Greek football, success last summer in Portugal was the reward for a lifetime of unfulfilled expectations. Only twice before had Greece even qualified for a major tournament, the 1980 European Championships and the 1994 World Cup. Needless to say even in qualifying for those tournaments, the national side brought little joy to those who were watching them back home especially at USA ’94 when the “Ethniki”, as the national team are termed, couldn’t even muster a goal in three matches, the only thing they succeeded in bringing back to Greece was shame.
Minutes after the Euro 2004 final had ended, every street in Greece was full, at least seemingly. The celebrations lasted for hours, and days in some cases. Greek football fans were experiencing a liberation of sorts; it was as if they had finally been freed from all those years of mediocrity, of oh so close matches that didn’t go in their favour, and of being considered a second-class footballing nation in Europe. There was also a new found optimism in regards to Greek football, both for the national team and the domestic game. It was thought that the fairytale played out in Portugal would bring about a renaissance of sorts for the sport back at home. Players, coaches, officials, politicians, and fans alike all agreed that the time for action was now in order to clean up the sport and ensure that success in Portugal was not a one-off.

Please clarify
Soccer is corrupt when a team like Bulgaria make the final four of a World Cup
You're calling us a cheap, gypsy nation? We're EU, you're not. Is Bulgaria supposed to be a true soccer nation?
The day Bulgaria wins a EuroCup is the day elephants fly...
You know what? You're not a Bulgarian. You're a SKOPIAN!!! Thats why you're against us!!!

Allies? Ha...we're rivals, not allies. When Bulgaria went by in the parade in Athens 2004, me and my friends cheered, when Greece went by your own people sat silent. When we were riding the bus home all I saw were these dry sandy mountains, with the occasional village. Compare this to my country, maybe you get a couple homeless dogs and a gypsi here or there, but overall we are not like you. Please stop insulting Bulgaria when you feel offended when I say about Greece. Where I am FROM has nothing to do with Greece cheating in tournaments or sucking at soccer. You say we rig USA 94? Our country barely had money to send our players there, we were wearing old adidas cleats and we still kick you country 4-0. The refs always tried to eliminate us, but we stayed in. It finally worked in the semi finals when Italy did a hand ball in the box and no call....so they cheated to make us lose, not to make us win. How could anyone accept such a small nation as champions?

Martin petrov17, why do you have to always get people angry and make topics that leave some wanting to swear at you...
instead of making a thread - "is euro fixed.. " ,you could have made a thread which says " bulgaria 94 or greece 04 , who is stronger" and could have inculded player stats, team stats, strategy etc and had a good analysis and discussion. And people have everyright to be happy. The joy is always maximum when something is won the first time.

Yes. The full 12 points. Eurovision 2005 winner: Greece
Next year: Eurovision 2006 in Athens.
Im surprised he hasnt started a thread about Greece not deserving Eurovision 2005. Im surprised he hasnt started a thread about Greece not deserving the Champions Cup Final in 2007.
If Greece makes the world cup, he'll probably start a thread about why Greece didnt deserve it. Then, if Greece, next year, is awarded the Euro 2012, he'll start a thread about why greece didnt deserve that as well.

Wow you guys are talking about cups again? You wont even qualify for 2006, and 2008 is highly unlikely, of course though "Impossible is nothing" and you guys wear Adidas....

What are you talking about? Who's talking Cups?
I did not say that a greek team will win the champions cup in 2007. I said the champions cup final of 2007 will take place IN Athens, Greece
I did not say that Greece will win the Eurocup in 2012. I said that Greece is a prime candidate to HOST the Euro 2012 games.
What does Adidas have to do with anything?

more jealosy pestrov...
They walk around wearing a championship top with pride because they can, you can't and probably never will. Too bad.
You're a wannabe Greek, but we'll never accept you. Even though thousands of Bulgarians work and live in Greece. You give all Bulgarians a bad name with your vulgar attitude. You live in Toronto hey. So don't go to the uber-cool Danforth, stick to your Bulgarian area, if there is one, because you're not wanted there either
MARTIN PESTROV THE VULGARIAN!!! - Your ugly, evil looking sig is a reflection of you and your character...
GET LOST, STOP BOTHERING US...

We used adidas in 94, and then from 95 switched to Puma.

The championship Greece won is CURRENT until 2008. Until someone knocks us off our throne, we have the right to say we are champs. its not old news. The reason Greeks are wearing shirts like that every day is because we have never done anything like that before. Other nations whose national teams/club teams win titles regularily take it for granted cuz it is EXPECTED that they do win and thus, they become spoiled. We were, by far, the biggest underdog ever to win such a prestigious tournament and we can talk about it with great pride. At least, youre somewhat admitting that the greeks celebrating in Toronto and STILL celebrating is what is getting to you.
"Impossible is nothing" is not gay. Youre missing the point. Greece winning the Euro 2004 gives hope to ALL small soccer nations worldwide that it is possible to win a Cup. Denmark started that trend in 1992 and Greece took it a step further last summer. Over 4 billion people saw us win and it gave small soccer nations this belief that, yes, it is possible to be a major underdog and win it all. Dont be surprised if a small nation wins the world cup.
That is why a SMALL soccer nation should not put down our Cup. It should be used as inspiration that the "impossible is possible" and that "impossible is truly nothing".

Well, Martin Petrov, you finally got banned like you deserve. If you look closely, Wolverine and I, in the Euro 2004 thread, are having a debate and we are disagreeing on certain issues reagarding styles between Europe and South America and who is better. Thats ok. We are doing it like gentlemen and even though I disagree with him on certain things, I respect him cuz he is not taking it personally and not taking cheap shots at me. Thats what YOU, martin petrov were doing for the last month regarding Euro 2004. Taking unprovoked cheap shots at Greeks and anybody who disagrees with you regarding Euro 2004 and taking Greece's triumph way too bitterly.
But, like you said, you'll use your friends accounts to post and if your greek-hating friends (as you refer to them) get banned, then you and them will open up new accounts. Thats called OBSESSIVE BEHAVIOR.
I just checked out your other posts and you are a major racist who puts down EVERYBODY/
Oh, by the way, Im surprised you have friends. When did this happen?

It is not good to talk against someone who is banned and can't anwser. He got the ban he deserved, we don't need to have these kind of conversations about him.

Just watching it, every single one of those goals gave me goose bumps.
I seriously wanted to cry after I was done watching them..
Amazing tournament we had...
But a hard qualification we still have to accomplish for Germany.
