Anorthosis claim historic victory

NICOSIA, Cyprus (Reuters) -- Cypriot side Anorthosis scored twice in the last eight minutes against Turkey's Trabzonspor in the first match between teams from the two countries in more than three decades.

The Champions League second qualifying round first leg clash, deemed high-risk by UEFA because of the political tensions on the island passed off without incident.

A 1,500 strong crowd of Turkish Cypriots was segregated by police and barbed wire away from 15,000 Greek Cypriots.

The home side went ahead on 24 minutes though Nicos Nicolaou's close-range strike.

Trabzonspor suffered a further blow on the stroke of halftime when Ibrahim Yattara was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in as many minutes.

Cypriot champions Anorthosis should have doubled their lead on 50 minutes but Leonidas Kapatais failed to convert from close range.

Trabzon stunned the home fans with a 75th minute equalizer from Fatih Tekke.

Bbut Anorthosis gave themselves a major chance of advancing to the third round as Nicos Froussos and Klimenti Tsitaishvili struck with late goals.

The match, the first between teams from the two countries since Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974, was played in Nicosia as no other stadium in Cyprus comes up to UEFA standards for European matches.

Bart Goor scored one goal and set up another as Anderlecht cruised past Neftchi Baku of Azerbaijan 5-0 in their Champions League second qualifying round first leg match on Tuesday.

The Belgians dominated the first half and were four goals up at the interval.

Hannu Tihinen opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he headed in a corner from Goor.

Anderlecht doubled their tally two minutes later, Nenad Jestrovic heading in a perfect cross from Swedish international Christian Wilhelmsson.

A third headed goal in the 32nd minute from Mbo Mpenza put the Belgians firmly in control.

Anderlecht made it 4-0 less than a minute later when Neftchi Baku goalkeeper Jahangir Hasanzade picked up a back pass in his own area and Goor struck following Wilhelmsson's indirect free kick.

I' ve also noticed what you say. Especially in the games that both teams are not so experienced so for sure new teams will advance to the CL groups. I like this, that is a chance for new teams to become powers.

I repeat what I say Panathinaikos must have NO STRESS. Stress is the worst thing. With no stress Panathinaikos can qualify easily, all what we need is a quick goal, to be infront in the score in the end of the first half. If we score in the first half the game is ours, but the players must have no stress.

Because the full stadium will be a 'dikopo maxairi'. At the one side the 75,000 people will help the players, but at the other side if we don't score at the first half it will make the players have more stress. I hope the players will be mild.

Today is the 2nd leg of the 3rd qualifying round.

Panathinaikos-Wisla: What I said before about stress is the most important thing. Also the 70,000 Panathinaikos crowd can scare the Polish a bit, and make them play defensively for keeping the result of the first game. If they do that, Panathinaikos will score 3 or 4 goals, but if they play open game we must be very careful of our defence.

Rangers-Anorthosi: The result of the first game in Cyprus makes things extremely difficult for Anorthosi, but as I said in football impossible is nothing (especially if the Hellenic heart works :D).

I hope that both teams will qualify.

I saw the end of the first half and the rest of the game. Pao played really bad in the first half especially in the first 20 mins but settled down. They then played a good game and deserved the win but I didnt think that was a red card. A liitle unfair on that call. See you in the round of 32

What excited me was that Panathinaikos players didn't gave up when the first half passed with no goal, and when Wisla scored. Panathinaikos of the last year or previous years would give up for sure. What also amazed me is that all the players of Panathinaikos were running restless until the last minute of the half time, when the Polish were visibly tired. The nice surprises of the game were Leontiou and Charalambidis. Especially Charalambidis was great. I am satisfied with Panathinaikos, our only problem were the mistakes in defense in the first half - but maybe that was because of the stress too. But generally with this game, I believe we can go far in the CL :).

I happy to see BABAGINGA AND TOURE play hell of games. Well see nothing is losed yet. We have to go game for game with Real to hae a shot. We made it more difficult for ourselfs but whatever.

Yes, I liked a lot our game yesterday. At the first have we didn't did something special even if that was when we scored the goals, but in the second half our game was great. I can't believe these chances lost. Mantzios and Gekas lost some good chances, and this one with Seric that Werder keeper saved! Their keeper was very good in the whole game. And the post of Gonzalez! If this was a goal it would be the best of the matchday for sure.
Malesani said that we must still improve our performance in the next game.

I think malesani made a good job letting out biscan by puting the youngsters in the main squad.This move will make the players understand the competition for the main squad...The 1st eleven players for every match should be the players that PLAYS football and deserve a place in the squad!!
Conceincao played better than other matches but still the team expects a lot more from him...
As for the players that left behind the game(olisadebe and charalampides) is said that they're injured.

AEK has ebaten Olympiaikos many times and so did Olympiaikos but we can all agree every teams has their bad times so lets not go around saying AEK sucks or Panionios suck. Anyways Thor you shouldn't be a hooligan. Dont be all happy if Olympiaikos loses or any other big team in Greece but AEK since thats just rude. Remember we want as many Greek teams doing good in Europe as possible so that greece can get more points.

A very bad week for Greek teams in CL. I prefer not to mention the results, however they are still hopes for Panathinaikos to qualify, and for Olympiakos for the 3rd place.

All we have to do is beat Udinease and Werder Bremen which are two easy teams to beat, but for Olympiaikos the future this year in Europe doesn't seem to bright for them, and I don't even think they are gonna go to the Uefa cup this year either :sad:

Again can't believe how we lost this game with Udinese. In the away games with Barca and Udinese I can say OK, we were very bad and we lost but on Tuesday? We could have scored 3 or 4 at the first half, which ended 1-0. And then near the end of the game the Italians scored 2 funny goals in 3 minutes. I don't know, maybe we are asking for too much with the team we have. We have about half of Greece's under 21 team and these players are talented but they need a lot of European experience. Maybe that is the reason they can't finish the chances and make them goals.

I believe if we keep Malesani and don't make anymore a lot of player changes like Jigger was doing the last years, we will create a very good team which will be ready to do the European task in 2 or 3 years.

What i'm not proud of is Malesani. Malesani changed to a defensinve squad in the last 20 minutes :mad2: Not to mention Malesani is Italian! He probly wanted Udinese to win anyways. Mantsios by the way was great. I think Mantsios will prove to be a great player at our national team. Not to mention i'm glad at the beggining it was 7 greeks out of 11 players. End of the first phase and all our teams are out of Europe. No need to say that this was the wors years for Greek teams in Europe, for the last 10 years.

What is good is that it was visible that both Panathinaikos and Olympiakos have good prospects for the future and it is not that easy to create a team. (Yes, even with these 5 goal humiliations, I believe the team of PAO has a future) This season was terrible but I honestly believe our 2 big teams have a bright future in CL next years.
