Iker Casillas Fernandez was born in Madrid on May, 20th, 1981. His mother is María del Carmen, his father José Luis, and his little brother, Unai. When he was a child lived for some years in the Basque Country, but he feels and loves Madrid. His parents come from a little town of Ávila (Navalacruz), where Iker goes at any free time.
He used to play football at school, but he liked the game so much that his father signed him for Real Madrid, the team accepted.
He played with Real at first time in November, 25 1997; with 16 years. The two Real Madrid goalkeepers, Illgner and Contreras, were injured. He was at school when suddendly the principal entered the class and called him "Iker, Real Madrid has just called you. You must go with them".
The match was in Norway, versus Rosenborg, in a Champions League match. Was so big his surprise that he didn't went home, he ran to the airport, where he met his idols. Unfortunately, Real Madrid lost that match.
But Iker was too young to play in Real, so he returned to the lower categories. His first match in Liga was on September 12, 1999 versus Athletic de Bilbao in San Mamés: 2-2. For the next two years, Casillas stayed as the main goalkeeper but, Del Bosque did something never explained: sat him on the bench, and Cesar, recently bought from Valladolid, became the first goalkeeper. That's the year of Centenariazo, when Real Madrid lost the Copa del Rey against Depor in Bernabeu's. Iker cryed, because he thought he could have been useful. Luckily, in the Champions League final match, Cesar was injured in the minute 70', and Casillas joined the game. His three consecutive Golden Hands gave Real Madrid the victory. That year of World Cup, he was called by Camacho for the NT, instead of Cañizares, who got injured in a foot with a cristal bottle.
He did it great, specially in June, 16, when three New Golden Hands versus Ireland made Spain qualify to quarterfinals.
That great job in the Champions League and in the World Cup bringed him back the titularity.
