My son is 13, and is a very serious (elite club) soccer player. The problem is his feet: they are the widest and thickest (sole to top of foot) in captivity. This thickness (side to side) continues back to the proximal end of the metatarsal bones, making his feet look more square than most. He is now an adult size 6.5 or 7.

We need advice on which brands/styles are widest, please. Are certain manufacturers wider in general, etc.?

Any help appreciated.

Just saying for a girl I have wider feet than most, but I currently have the Nike Air Legends and they were a bit snug on me initially (i've managed to work them in quite a bit now) so if he doesn't mind working them in for quite a bit then they'd be ok. I also used to have Adidas Predator Manias and they were by far the most comfortable boot i've worn - width wise they were great and with K-leather they stretched perfectly.

Why not just get your son to go to a local store and try some on?

This is seriously not a good way to fix the problem of your sons feet, I don't mean to be rude but as a parent you should know better to take your son to a store and try the boots on or ask a professional to see if he has any abnormalties in his foot so that you don't end up making his feet worse just because you asked this question about "brand/styles".

But just to comment, any soccer boot that is kangaroo leather and starts a little wide for example, the adidas copas adidas predators etc... etc... will mold in with the foot unlike most Nike boots which are made of cheap plastic and give you serious blisters after the game which trust me isn't worth the money you pay for a Nike shoe which can range up to $200 Dollars U.S.

How is asking a professional going to help him get soem cleats? I get where your coming from but the shape of a foot can range very much from person to person, like soem kids have more arch in their foot than others.

That's not quite the point, which is that his feet are almost as wide as they are long.... it's the width that is the problem.

Keith,

I seem to have the same problem as your son. I have size 9 feet (small for my age of 15), but they seem unusually wide. In response to SaberWolf (06-08-2005 04:54 PM), I found when I tried on Nike boots that they were actually quite narrow. I currently wear Adidas's Copa Mundial. it is a supple yet surprisingly durable leather boot. The guy in the shop told me that leather is better than synthetic at "breaking in"- reshaping to fit the foot of it's regular wearer.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

El_Maestro, you tried the T90's and they still wouldn't fit? Their's a dude on my team that loves the T90's just BECAUSE they are wide and fit his feet.

The best thing to do is go running with your son for an hour or two then go try on multiple cleats. The reason for running is because all feet swell after they have been used. That swelling should simulate what will happen during a game or practice. Whichever ones cause the least pain you should purchase.
Hoped that helped.

I feel your pain. My 15 y/o soccer player has hobbit feet too! I have the darnest time getting soccer cleats for him. It's so NOT simply a matter of trying on a bunch of shoes and buying the best fit because none of them fit at normal retailers, really none. My son had a very short yet very wide foot so it was forever before he could bump up to men's sizes and actually get the wide sizes in a good selection for everyday shoes. He is so sick of NewBalance he can harldy stand it. But thank goodness they existed while he wasn't in men's sizes yet. They do make soccer cleats in wides. But they aren't the best cleats around by far. Other brands don't make wides in soccer cleats even for men unless you're looking at the $200+ ones that we refuse to purchase.
What I do that is working is I look for Kangaroo leather only as they are the gold standard for maximum stretchability. They really will stretch to feet needing wides. I was surprised. Stay away from shoes that have a lot of stitching over or near the toe area that keeps the leather from being able to stretch. I've never had any luck with Nike or Addidas running wide enough but maybe some exist. We've found that Puma Kings in the more expensive versions with Kangaroo leather almost always work for him. I hear Jomas run wide too but haven't tried them except for indoor which went well.
Kangaroo leather is very expensive but can be found moderately priced if you search for it. Just go to the various online soccer store sites and search for Puma kangaroo leather and there is almost always a couple pairs ~50% off that weren't everyone's favorite the season before. Buy a couple pairs and have him try them on at home, pick the roomiest fit and send the rest back. I can always find a few pairs for under $100. I found a pair of Kangaroo leather Puma Kings for $74.99 last season at soccer.com.
Indoor soccer shoes are even tougher to find in wides or K. leather. NB didn't even make them last year as far as I could tell. I searched the web for hours for them. We found the Joma's Flex Tops to fit well enough wide for his hobbit feet last season. He wore them everyday to school as they are all wearing indoor soccer shoes(Sambas) as the latest fashion lately anyhow, even the nonsoccer players. They were all black with a golden yellow J on the side. For the first time in his life his friends gave him compliments on his shoes. They weren't K. leather but were leather. Didn't fit quite as well as K. leather but worked where the Sambas would never have even been able to be tried on as his feet are just that wide really. If you buy leather that isn't K-leather, it helps to run around with them a little wet then let them dry out still on the foot all afternoon. That really stretches them out. But we didn't have to get that drastic with the Jomas but had done that before we switched to K-leather cleats when he was ~13. Of course doing that all the time would cause foot fungus. Just do it to break them in. When we finally switched to K-leather his game really improved as he no longer needed shoes that were too long.
Best of luck in your quest to find your own hobbit some cleats that truely fit.

Nike T-90 Laser III, or Puma V-Konstrukt III. The Pumas are for faster players(I use them), and Nike are for more defending players, and great for making sliding tackles.

i absolutely agree with the posts on kangaroo leather. The ability of the material to mold to the foot is excellent. Most of the nikes are quite narrow and the adidas's are only slightly wider. As mentioned in an earlier post, new balance offers cleats that go much wider than your average shoe. If the kids feet really are almost as wide as they are long he might end up having to sacrifice quality for fit. A player cannot play well in too small of cleats, but they can overcome the quality of the shoe.

K-Leather suggestions: Adidas Predators (new models), Umbro Speciali, Copa Mundial/Adidas AdiPURE, Puma King.

That's a very interesting topic. But this field is still new to me. It will be grateful if you give me some
more information about it. Thanks in adva

There is some in getting proper measurements of your son's feet first as there are manufacturers who make all manner of shoes especially for people with particularly wide or narrow feet (http://www.duoboots.com/pages/size_measuring_guide/).

By the time I post this the original poster's kid will be 18 years old LOL!

I have wide feet and would like to find a shoe that fits properly. The reality is that none of the major brands make wide shoes. New Balance is the only one that sells 2E or 4E soccer cleats and, although I haven't tried them, I hear they suck. I've also seen a pair of Adidas Tunits online in a wide but have yet to see them anywhere. All other shoes are just made a little wider by chance.

For years I've been playing in Adidas Copas because of the soft leather and good quality. It is true that the K-leather stretches to accommodate a large foot, but what hasn't been discussed is that the sole of these regular width shoes dont support the arch and width of your foot. Once the leather has stretched the side of my foot near my big toe is overlapping the side of the sole. This results in foot pain after the game and the next day, and my ball control is surely affected

So after trying on 20 shoes at the store, I've purchased a pair of Diadora LX K MGs. They felt like the widest to me and the sole supported my foot. They are K-leather but it's quite thick and I don't think it'll stretch much. When I got them home and compared them to my already stretched Copas, they already felt wider.

So my advice, go to a soccer store and try on as many pairs as it takes. And be ready to spend $150+

thanks
