Im gonna try to translate the interview with Turkish NT head coach Ersun Yanal that I saw in the newspaper.
Reporter(R): Do you think you are gonna play a destiny(of Turkish NT's at the qualify round) games against Greece and Kazakistan? Do you believe that?
Ersun Yanal(EY): I dont call them destiny games, i called(see) every game as a final. We have to win every game left. I dont believe in destiny. I dont do my job with desitny or luck. This is not me. The thinks that you can achieve is not up to luck or destiny. First of all, you have to do your job.
R: How do you apporoach to the players, is it hard to be the leader?
EY: Once Ataturk said;"We didnt use unconscious leadership". First we prepared the base. We have great communications with our players. We first show them the things that they do and things that they can do. We judging their capabilities(at the end they have a feelings too). We are trying to control and understand their feelings after that we work on them to give it a shape and we have professionals working on these.
R: What has changed from the "World-Cup-3rd" team?
EY: Everybody was judging Brazil in 1980's because they couldnt do defence. They were saying if they would do defence like European teams noone could beat them. They transfered a lot players to Europe and they combined the creativty of the Brazilian football and the desipline of Europe. Now they are a great team. Football became a game that you have to be good in both sides. Defence need desipline, asperity, sacrifice, toleration. So we have flaw here and we are working on this and we almost there and we'll do it until we achieve that.
R: You came from a club coaching and you had a philosophy there. What is your philosophy on the National Team?
EY: Both are very different things. In Club coaching, you this team in hand, you can organize the way you want it and you intorduce your style to your players. You play games every week and you are with them almost every single day. But National Team is different. Here you have to use the Turkish football's style and you have to choose your by that.
You have to achieve this stly that has consistensy and we are trying to achieve that. For example, the skeleton of this team has to be continuied for years. You are reflecting the nations football philosophy on the field. Our responsiblity is huge.
The skeleton of the team has to be same next 2-3 years no matter what. We have to built this team that up coming team has to be in the same philosophy that you built. For example, this generation could play at least 2 more cup in the European Cup and World Cup because the team is very young and raw. But our football came to a point that will see the change and be successfull. I think we missed that change, when we wanted play the Confederation Cup in France but now, we are changing and we will succeed at the same time.
R: Was there any break off in the team after the 2002 World Cup?
EY: This came up in the media as well. They said that why we didnt go for a change in the Confederation Cup? If you think about it, when Holland was doing changes, they missed the World Cup. We became 3rd and that was a huge success. But we work to keep Turkish football in the 3rd place of the world or better place. If you achieve success and change at the same time i think its would be possible. We have the built the bridge between the generations. If you miss that performance would be like a bird. Once you missed it, you wont find it.
I actually think, we dont need anymore change because we did enough changes already. We just have to do small changes. They could have combine the players from the Euro 2004(from the elimination rounds) and Confederation Cup. We have decide very carefully.
R: All the teams in the group have no chance for mistake...
EY: All the games very important in the group. If we win the Greece game, there is Kazakhistan game after that and Denmark, right after that Albania and Ukranien. From now this point we, Denmark and Ukraine has maybe one time lossing chance but maybe Greece wont have that chance. If Denmark looses to Greece, they will be out. Thats why all the teams has no more luxuory of loosing.
R: Do you think both team has the same conditions?
EY: Yes, Olympiakos, AEK and Panathinakos had very hard championship race. Olympiakos became the champions in the last week of the league. A lot of players plays in Portugal, Holland, Italy and Spain. Thats why both teams atmosphere will be the same. But if we were playing Russia, it would be different because their season is still on. Greek League and SuperLig is over!
R: What else can you add Mr. Yanal?
EY: If we do our changes right we could be the number one. We have 35000 elemantary schools and we have 11 million kids. If we can use resources, we have potential to be of the top football nation. We are the European champions of the 1988 borned generation and second for 1985 borned generations. We have pull the bar up. If we organize well, we'll be the one of the best.
