Keeper Carroll Released By Reds

Roy Carroll has been given a free transfer by Manchester United. The goalkeeper's four-year stint at Old Trafford will cease at the end of next month.

Media reports had suggested the Northern Ireland goalkeeper would sign a new contract with the Reds this week, but today he is confirmed as one of eight players who are being released by United. Another is fellow shot-stopper Ricardo.

Carroll signed for United in July 2001 from Wigan Athletic, initially as second choice behind Fabien Barthez.

Tim Howard was drafted in two summers ago and immediately laid claim to the number one spot at Old Trafford. However, Carroll and the American have both taken turns as Ferguson's first choice during 2004/05.

The decision to let Carroll and Ricardo go leaves Howard as United's only senior goalkeeper, and means Sir Alex is likely to add to his squad in the goalkeeping department over the summer.

Six young professionals - Ramon Calliste, Ben Collett, Daniel Nardiello, David Poole, Lee Lawrence and Paul Tierney - have also been released.
