What does everyone think is the best formation. This is hypothetical, so you can assume that you have any type of player at your disposal. This is NOT a dream team post, what I mean is that if you want to play a 3-4-1-2, you do have a playmaker at your disposal. This way you can fairly compare all formations.

My formation of course is the 3-4-1-2.

Three defenders is enough. They each cover a portion of the back line and I think the fourth defender can sometimes be a bad thing. The offside trap works much better with three defenders, because it's obviously easier to pull off with less players at the back. If things get hectic, the defensive midfielder can come back.

I think four midfielders is perfect because you can have a left and right midfielder who can also move up and play as wingers when needed. We have a defensive midfielder to prevent the opposition from getting to the net if possible, and to help out in defence if needed. The other midfielder would obviously be an offensive minded player. One to push the midfield forward and give more support to the forwards.

The playmaker is the most important position IMHO. Considering how important players like Zidane, Boban, Veron, Rui Costa, Totti and others are to their team, it's unthinkable not to have this position.

Thanks to the playmaker, two strikers are enough. They will get support from the playmaker, and from the wings like I mentioned above.

What is your best formation and why?

i like that formation a lot also. but i disagree with what you said about the three man back. to only play 3 at the back you are taking a big risk. the key to that is haveing a keeper who can keep the defense organized and having your wingers come back on defense. personally i think a 4-4-2 with with one of you central midfielders getting forward is the best way to go.
