With the Gold Cup just around the corner, what are Canada's chances in
this tournament? IMHO the first game against Costa Rica will decide how
Canada does. A win and we're off and running, a draw and the pressure,
mounts, and a defeat, well we will be in a little trouble with the next game
against the Americans.

Canada has nothing. As much as i would like to believe the soccer program in canada is developing it has nothing to devolop on. But i think with soccers growing popularity in the states will start to propel soccer in canada. In the meantime all we can hope for is Gold cup succes but maybe oneday gold will be changed to World :p

People think that way about hockey as well. Hockey in Canada is alive and
well yet America still sucks at the game. All Canadian soccer needs is a
league to play in then we will be fie.

Only in the United States it did you nimwad. Canada's just waiting for it to start up, as soon as it does it'll be all good.
As for Canada's football....MASSIVE POTENTIAL. MASSIVE.
Look, when the current Canada players were kids, barely anyone knew soccer existed. Both my parents weren't even aware professional soccer was around until the late 1980s! Now, Canada (at least where I am) is football mad, when liverpool won the CL I saw people on the streets doing the Dudek Dance. Gazillions more people are watching.....and PLAYING (!) soccer, more then ever before. IT won't be a surprise when the number of footballers exported to europe will go up exponentially in the next decade. I have every reason to be optimistic about Canada's future in the world of football.

All we need is a proper Canadian league or enough big Canadian cities in MLS then soccer will start to come round. soccer is popular all over Canada, not just one part of it, a bit of success at the gold cup might go a long way for making up after that terrible wcq campaign. Go Canada Go

The Gold Cup is our version of the european championships/south american,
etc. Canada won in 2000 and runners up in 2002? Where were you the JMC
school of Canadian soccer? We are not favored this time, we will be lucky
to win a match under Frank yallops leadership, then we wait till the 2007
Gold Cup then off to wcq in 2008 where we will go out early yet again, this
keeps repeating till 2018 when we should qualify for the wc again.

Costa Rica has a pretty tough NT. I'd really like to see Canada win though.
Last I heard, Canada is trying to join the MLS. I actually hope this comes through.

Jafet Soto's penalty kick goal lifts Costa Rica over Canada (http://www.concacaf.com/view_article.asp?id=3075)
"7.7.05 - Costa Rica opened Group B play of the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ beating Canada 1:0 at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington USA on Thursday.
Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3 Points) was able to open the scoring in the 30th minute after Canada's (0-1-0, 0 Points) defender Patrice Bernier was called for a handball in the penalty box."
“I think we put everything into the game, and I think we should have got something out of it, it’s frustrating to come away with no points," said Frank Yallop, who is at the helm of Canada. "I thought we handled Costa Rica very well and created many chances. I thought we did some very good things but were unlucky.”
