Two new call-ups for Greece for upcoming games

Greens pair earn Greece call

Uncapped Panathinaikos FC duo Loukas Vintra and Theofanis Gekas have been selected by Greece for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Albania.

Leading scorer
Defender Vintra and striker Gekas - the 14-goal leading scorer in the Alpha Ethniki - will replace the injured Olympiacos CFP pair of Stylianos Venetidis and Georgios Georgiadis for the away game in Georgia on 26 March and the visit of neighbours Albania four days later.

'Great honour'
The 24-year-old Vintra said of his call-up: "I'm very happy because it's every player's dream to be called into this national squad, the champions of Europe. I will do my best and hope that we win both matches." Gekas, also 24, was similarly upbeat. "It's a great honour, I'm very proud," he said.

FC Köln playmaker Vassilios Tsiartas is included too after overcoming the calf injury which caused him to miss February's 2-1 defeat of Denmark. The victory moved Greece up to second place in Group 2, six points behind Ukraine with a game in hand.

The Nehterlands and Croatia have always been doing good, or at least better than Greece:
Netherlands got a European Championship and two lost World Cup finals, and Croatia got the third place in France '98, which I think wasn't luck at all.... :D

They've blown big games in World Cups (thats because they can't take on the world, using your own words) and Euro Cups past, especially in penalty time, with the only exception being Sweden this past Euro 2004. Speaking of which, Holland lost in Portugal 2-1 in Euro 2004. Greece won in Portugal TWICE. Also, in Euro 2004, Holland lost to Czech Republic 3-2, a game where Holland was winning winning 2-0. Greece DEFEATED the Czech Republic 1-0. Greece is ranked #13 and Holland is ranked #6 in the world rankings. Not bad for a "lucky" team, as you put it.

As for Croatia, in Euro 2004, they tied France 2-2, a game where Croatia was winning 2-1. Greece DEFEATED France 1-0. By the way, how many cups do Croatia have? Or better yet, how many cups did the former Yugoslavia ever win? Also, Greece is ten spots higher than Croatia (#23) in the world rankings. Thats very impressive for a, as you put it, "lucky" team.

And don't talk about Greece being lucky. You cannot win a major soccer tournament on luck. Greece has become the international soccer inspiration for small teams who feel they can't win a tournament.

The ranking doesn't matter, I told you not to look at the numbers.
If you were as good as you were in June-July 2004, at least you had to beat us in Tirana, and Turkey in Athens.

Croatia got third in 98...wow. they played "quality" teams like Japan and Jamaica to get through the prelimenaries, then had to dig deep against "powerhouse" Romania, before beating a 10 man German side.

Your moderator lost his moderatorship because he didn't know how to behave. If you act like him you will get banned because you have no moderatorship to loose.

Watch your mouth next time. If someone says that greece sucks or that greece was lucky you have no right to offend the person or his country. He is talking about a football team.
If I say that Barcelona sucks because I am a Real Madrid fan there is nothing wrong in that. The same thing is true for a Turk who says that Greece sucks because he wants Turkey to qualify and not Greece. This is just football rivalry.
Also it is not the Turks and Albanians that ruin this forum; it's the greeks who can't stand different opinions.
When somebody opens a thread saying "greece sucks" why do you have to insult him personally or his nationality? If you can convince the guy that greece does not suck ok, if not then mind your own business and go on with your life.
Also don't go around saying that turks and albanians suck because that is not a football thing anymore...
This is an open first and last warning. Next time it will be different.

Since I'm not greek, albanian or turk, I'll give a neutral view point

The greek team of euro04 was good and effective. Discipline is the word. Not fun to watch, but a great team non the less. And the fact that they beat france, portugal twice , czech to win the trophy shows a lot about their capability.

The turkish team, of wc02 was a very exciting team to watch. They have a slump in form, but They still are well within qualifying range, if they can get some old magic working again

The albanian team, if they could beat the greek team of euro04, there sure is something to this team.

IMO, this is the toughest group , even toughre than the nederland, czech and romania , since more teams in this one have a realistic chance of wc qualification.
