Lately talks and rumours have been spread about Australia possibly moving into World Cup Qualifying with Asia. This would give Australia the chance to get an automatic qualifying spot for the World Cup. This would take effect for the WC 2010 qualifying campaign. What are everybodys thoughts....

I would say yes, coz australia are not that far behind korea, japan or iran in footbal. so wc qualification is comparitevly easier from afc.Plus there are 4-5 slots for teams from afc. Plating 4th/5th team of S america is not that simple, as it can have big time teams like paraguay, uruguay or columbia. The away leg in s america is always very very difficult.

It would benifit both sides, the only downside is the distance between some of the countries...

i am tottaly against this. because if we let Australia join, then we have to let like, Guam and New Zealand. why would aussie get a automatic birth ne ways? putting them in our the asian qualification zone would (i think) make it harder for aussie to get to the WC10

would be the best thing that's ever happened to australian football.
For starters it would give us more than only 1 or 2 matches to get excited about every 4 years, also it would'nt put us in the current situation of always having to play a do or die playoff, another bonus would be competing in the asian cup every 2 years not to mention the asian club competitions.
The thing is it should have been like this since day one, why has it taken so many years for this to be seriously considered, it's only since australian football's new management has taken over are we finally getting the ball rolling with a decent national league and now hopefully joining the asian confedration.

I'd like to know the reasons behind some people saying no. There should be no concern about New Zealand. The reason why this should happen is so that every single time we have Oceania Qualifying its not always Australia. Instead N.Z, Soloman Islands etc. have a chance themselves to qualify.
Secondly putting Australia is the AFC gives us the chance to prove we deserve an automatic qualifying spot. If for instance we finish top four in the AFC qualifying it then proves that Australia has always deserved the chance to get automatic qualifying. Being pitted against the fifth South American team is never going to be easy, with the points so close it could be Arg, Uruguay etc. This sort of pressure is one not experienced by any other team in the world. This is why to me the current qualifying system is unfair. To stop this problem, Australia should join the AFC.

Why not? It can be.
I guess they have an another political purpose,
but it's OK. Korea always can beat Austrailia. :p
No problemo.

Now its been reported that New Zealand also want to join Asia. I think this is a joke. NZ are not strong enough to warrant a move to the AFC. I recent times they haven't even been able to match it with the Soloman Islands at all different level. Australia to move a great idea, NZ on the other hand seems stupid.

Theres nothing to worry about though, New Zealand are just not strong enough or have a good enough reason to change. Australia yes, NZ no and i think thats how its gonna turn out :)

Move to Europe thats a bit unreasonable. Im not sure if you but in a lot of cases Asia and Oceania are considered one, Australasia. Our continents are right next to each other making it reasonably close. There are benefits for both sides, Australia and Asian Football. Making the qualifying harder for Asian teams will therefore make the quality of football so both sides benefit.

Err..Australasia is another word for Oceania, it does not mean Asia and Oceania. Also the AFC is for Asian countries, many Australians are decendants of European and other caucasian settlers so it can't really be considered Asian. If this was just a question of location then Cananda & USA may want to join as they are not that far from Japan. Perhaps a better compromise would be to have a play off between the 1st placed Oceania team & the 4th/5th placed AFC team.

In case some of you havnt heard, the bid for Australia to join the AFC has been accepted and backed by the AFC Commitee when they met recently in Malaysia. All that is left to do now is get the approval from FIFA. Australia is now one step closer to joining the Asian Football Confederation! (if thats what AFC stands for :silly: )

Maybe they should change the name to:
Asian and Anyone Who Wants to Join Purely To Make Their Lives Easier Confederation. Hmm probably too long, how about:
Absolutely Farcical Confederation.

If this move did not happen, the economic benefits for the game here would be stuffed. I mean we are isolated and this helps so much for us u must understand that.
1) Because it helps at club level - Asian Champions League for our top clubs (e.g. Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory, Perth Glory etc.) = More money and more interest + games
2) International Level - Fairer Qaulification system and an opportunity to play against real football opposition. The only problem could be a club v country row with games being played over in Australia and many of our players based in Europe/England.
Therfore, as neighbours in which we rely heavily on Asia for economic practises, we must also accomodate this into football. You look at the geography of the world and our whole thing is pretty much Asia. We have Indonesia right above us and they are in Asia and heaps of ur ppl r united thru geography with us.
its only fair we should be able to join.

Exactly, our team is good and is improving but has also proved they can match it with the best. Also it brings another dynamic to the AFC, having a Oceanic team within creates new interest, new rivalrys and new traditions. Im sure when Australia tries to qualify for 2010 everybody will be wanting to beat them.

I always felt that FAIR WC qualification system would be to give oceania 1 automatic place, otherwise if they were to be given 0.5 place the playoff should be with ASIA's 4th team, not South America.
But in essence this is probaly good for australia only and not too much on oceania as a whole.
the rest of oceania is in danger of being isolated, where as australia now has the opportunity to be a part of developing region.
All in All i guess its good for the game, and Asia too will benefit being in heavy competition with european style team like the aussies.
One things for sure though, Australia domestic soccer trouble in the past few years has taken them backwards, where as Asia has dramtically progressed.
I dont think asian teams fear australia anymore, where as australia was seen as a threat back in the 70's and 80's.
