Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League after Hernan Crespo's goal saw AC Milan win 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate.
Crespo, who is on loan at Milan from Chelsea, scored the winner in the first leg at Old Trafford and struck again at the San Siro to end United's European dreams for another season.
The Argentinian rose at the far post to convert Cafu's cross with a fine looping header in the 61st minute and secure Milan's place in the quarter-finals.
United might have levelled the tie with a rare chance in the 28th minute. Ruud van Nistelrooy found Ryan Giggs in the box, but his shot struck the post with goalkeeper Dida beaten.
The Welshman later had to be replaced by Quinton Fortune early in the second half after suffering a bloody nose in a collision with Gennaro Gattuso.
It was a massive blow for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who struggled to break down a stubborn Milan side.
The Italians dominated for long periods and felt they should have had a penalty when Roy Keane appeared to handle the ball in the box, but the referee waved away their appeals.
Van Nistelrooy should have equalised on the night when he found himself on the end of a flowing attack, but the Dutchman's lack of match fitness showed as he shot hopelessly wide.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney hit long-range efforts, which failed to test Dida as United failed to offer much in an attacking sense.
Gatusso could have increased Milan's lead when he shot agonisingly wide in the closing stages after a delightful one-two with Kaka on the edge of the box.

Congrats to AC Milan for makin' it through... They basically dominated the match. I was thinking maybe if Giggs scored that goal, would it hv changed the way the match went??? :(
