Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League after Hernan Crespo's goal saw AC Milan win 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate.

Crespo, who is on loan at Milan from Chelsea, scored the winner in the first leg at Old Trafford and struck again at the San Siro to end United's European dreams for another season.

The Argentinian rose at the far post to convert Cafu's cross with a fine looping header in the 61st minute and secure Milan's place in the quarter-finals.

United might have levelled the tie with a rare chance in the 28th minute. Ruud van Nistelrooy found Ryan Giggs in the box, but his shot struck the post with goalkeeper Dida beaten.

The Welshman later had to be replaced by Quinton Fortune early in the second half after suffering a bloody nose in a collision with Gennaro Gattuso.

It was a massive blow for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who struggled to break down a stubborn Milan side.

The Italians dominated for long periods and felt they should have had a penalty when Roy Keane appeared to handle the ball in the box, but the referee waved away their appeals.

Van Nistelrooy should have equalised on the night when he found himself on the end of a flowing attack, but the Dutchman's lack of match fitness showed as he shot hopelessly wide.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney hit long-range efforts, which failed to test Dida as United failed to offer much in an attacking sense.

Gatusso could have increased Milan's lead when he shot agonisingly wide in the closing stages after a delightful one-two with Kaka on the edge of the box.

Congrats to AC Milan for makin' it through... They basically dominated the match. I was thinking maybe if Giggs scored that goal, would it hv changed the way the match went??? :(

If Giggs had made the goal, we would've changed the momentum to a United victory. Sadly, Ruud was completely off form, and cost us at least 2 more goals.

Real Madrid was the biggest shock for me, that or Bayern beating Arsenal.

I was really hoping that Real would've made it... Zalayeta got lucky with the shot! It was Juve's day... Ronaldo's foul was unnecessary!

Lucky? I think Real is more lucky. Before the extra time,Juv got 3-4 clear cut chances to finish the game but miss fire, thanks to luck,Real can hang on to extra-time but still cannot escape the inevitable.

I think the happiest man for Milan to win Man Utd is Jaap Stam. After the game end,Stam must be feeling "Yes,I took my revenge,f**k u Fergie!"

Man Utd plaed quite well at Milan, Giggs was excellent and should have converted that half chance. If Nistelrooij had been in form, then, the match could have gone Man Utd's way. Gattusso was an absolute animal on the field, he broke giggs nose and kept taunting young rooney. He was more keanish and keane himself. :)

I thought Real could make it through very easily.
Milan totally deserved the double win against Manchester Utd.
I'm lookin' forward to see the draw for the quarter finals, it should be really interesting.

The finals will be a great match, no matter the team. This year's CL is amazing.

Even the knockout round featured the big teams so the finals would be a must-watch!
