LEBANON - The 4th edition of the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship in 2006 will be named after former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Hariri was killed in a bomb blast on Valentine’s Day in west Beirut.
This was disclosed after a meeting in Beirut yesterday. The tournament proper begins in Lebanon, 2006. The draw would be held in February next year.
WAFF General Secretary Fadi Zureikat and Lebanon FA General Secretary Bahij Abou Hamze signed an agreement on hosting the event together with their marketing partner representative, Pierre Kakhia.
Two new teams have been invited to join the six-nation tournament, UAE and Australia. The six countries who are participating in this tournament are Iran, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon.
The overall prize money has been increased to USD $150,000 with first place winning USD $70,000, second place USD $40, 000 and third place USD $20,000.
