Is it true Canadians play a more physical game than Americans in the U.S.?

Canada has to play physical to make up for the lack of any real goalscorers. If we can keep a game close anything can happen, but when we try to play football against a top nation like Portugal the usual hammering takes place.

yeah man i watched Canada vs Brazil, I really thought Canada played impressive i mean scoring two goals against brazil when your ranked like 90 or some thing like that? you have to give credit to canada for putting up a good fight against a world class team like brazil, and the score at the end was very very close only 3-2 not bad your a canadian fan i would be hella happy to score 2 goals on class team like brazil without a doubt...
im most likely going to bet on this game because my jamacian friend really thinks that Canada will be beaten by Jamaica but i really doubt it ;)

well done Mexico, i watched the game yesterday, 1st goal from Omar Bravo was pure class, dam he jumps high though, 2nd goal was really good to, Marguez scored from a dificult angle kinda shocked me, the worst part of the game was watching Blanco come in to play his last game for his country, i liked what the players did at the end, having a sign saying "Gracias Cuauhtémoc Blanco" to show that hes a legend for Mexico, his scoring numbers are pretty dam good but i just dont get why he said im going to retire from international football because i want to focus more on playing for my club, thats BS, your country should come first before anything but i guess for him its the other way around...
could someone tell me who #18 was for Mexico that guy looked world class, i remember one play where he dribbled past the canadian defence he bent it in and almost scored classic moves from him..

Canada's men's national team has announced that it will face Argentina in an international friendly match this 24 May at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The match will be played as part of the bicentenary anniversary of the Revolución de Mayo, the early 19th century "May Revolution" that helped form Argentina into an independent nation. The 24 May match will be the first-ever meeting between the two men's national teams.

"This is a landmark match for Canadian soccer," said national coach Stephen Hart. "To be invited to play Argentina in Argentina is a player's dream. They are simply one of the best teams in world football."

Canada ranked fifth in CONCACAF
http://www.canadasoccer.com/images/media/20090528_Stalteri_Hartwww.jpg
Canada's men's national team remains the fifth-ranked team amongst all CONCACAF nations on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. Canada has 508 points and is ranked 62ndth on the world ranking. Canada trails Mexico, USA, Honduras and Costa Rica within its own confederation.
The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.
Amongst the CONCACAF Top 10, Mexico slipped ahead of USA for the top spot in the confederation. Mexico ranks 15th overall on the world ranking. The only other movement was Jamaica slipping ahead of Panama into 7th on the confederation list.
As for the overall world ranking, Spain, Brazil, Netherlands and Italy remain the top four nations in the world. Rounding out the top-10 are Germany, Portugal, France, England, Argentina and Greece.

CARSON, Calif. — Wearing the captain’s armband for one’s national team is an honor that few players ever experience. On January 31, Ante Jazic became one of those players.
The Chivas USA defender had been with the Canadian national team for a 2-week training camp in Florida when it was announced that he would captain the squad for the camp’s culminating friendly match against Jamaica in Kingston.
http://www.canadasoccer.com/images/headshots/Jazic_Ante2004www.jpg
“It was a wonderful feeling,” said Jazic of donning the captain’s armband for the first time. “Dwayne [de Rosario] was supposed to be the captain, but he pulled out of the match with an injury. At the team meal before the game, the coach said I was going to be captain. It was really nice.”
The match marked Jazic’s 25th international cap for Canada. He made his debut for the side in a 1998 friendly match against Macedonia, and scored his first international goal 10 years later against Panama, on June 4, 2008.
Canada removes interim tag from Hart's title

By Vijay Setlur
TORONTO - Stephen Hart had the interim tag removed from his title as manager of the Canadian national team on Monday, given the job full time in the country's bid to return to the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
"My role will be, No. 1, to assemble a staff and, No. 2, to present a team that is not only competitive, but understands what is required from all levels and to make the players understand that they are the ones that are responsible for putting Canada on the map," Hart said.
"It will be our objective to focus on the CONCACAF qualifications for 2012. I have no qualms about experimenting, about using the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition to prepare towards this."
It'a looking like it's going to be a busy month of May for the National Team. Argentina on the 24th, Venezuela on the 29th and there are now rumors that they'll play Ecuador in Toronto earlier in the Month before Ecuador heads to South Korea for a friendly in Seoul.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Maxi Rodriguez scored two goals and Argentina defeated Canada 5-0 on Monday in the Gauchos' final tuneup before their World Cup opener June 12 against Nigeria.
Argentina's farewell match was played with FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi on the bench. Messi was rested by coach Diego Maradona after a grueling European season. Midfielder Javier Pastore started up front with Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Except for Messi, the lineup was the one expected when Argentina opens the World Cup.

FFU vice-president Volodymyr Lashkul informed that Ukrainians will meet the team of Argentina at one of the domestic stadiums, but it is not yet decided on which one. Four days before this on October 8 blue-yellows will host a match against another representative of the north-American continent - Canada’s national team. This match will probably be played in Lviv. Volodymyr Lashkul also mentioned that negotiations as to the other friendly matches on September 7 (probable opponents are Wales, Northern Ireland and Uruguay) and November 17 (there are negotiations with the Federations of Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, Scotland, Russia, Serbia, Israel, Slovakia and Denmark, because there are no yet any agreement with the Football Association of Czech Republic) are being carried on.

New CONCACAF Qualifying Proposal Levels Playing Field By going away from the six-team Hexagonal
http://www.ussoccerplayers.com/.a/6a00e54eea3d1c88340133ed645e0e970b-800wi
Under a new proposed qualifying format, the Hexagonal would go the way of the VCR. Instead of one six-team group, the final round would feature two four-team groups, each team playing their group rival home and away. Group winners would advance directly, runners-up would play each other with the winner claiming the third and final direct berth. Playoff loser would then play a team from another confederation for another World Cup spot.

CANADA v. UKRAINE
http://www.ffu.org.ua/img/forall/a/55/79.jpg
Canada came away with a 2:2 draw against European side Ukraine in a Men's International Friendly match in Kyiv, Ukraine. The match was played on Friday 8 October as part of the schedule of FIFA International Dates. Canada scored two goals in the first half before a different Ukrainian lineup evened the score with two goals in the second half.
Canada got goals from Simeon Jackson and Atiba Hutchinson before Ukraine equalised with goals from Artem Milevsky and Anatoliy Tymoschuk. It was Jackson who opened the scoring in the 12th minute.
To score, Jackson beat a defender and fired a quick shot over Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Piatov who was off the line. The shot caught Piatov by surprise and was placed perfectly underneath the crossbar. The Jackson goal was assisted by Hutchinson.

Canada to play February friendly in Greece
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/sports/photos/2010/09/28/stalteri-paul-100907.jpg
Canada will visit former European champion Greece for a men's soccer friendly Feb. 9.
The match, at a venue to be announced later, will be part of Canada's early preparations for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Greece is currently ranked 12th in the world by FIFA, compared to No. 88 for Canada.
"Whenever you play a FIFA World Cup team, it is a special occasion," Canadian coach Stephen Hart said in a statement. "It was also not that long ago that Greece was a European champion, so the match will be challenging. Playing Greece in Greece will be good for us as we continue to develop as a team."

MLSers in action as Canada fall to Greece

De Rosario, Cann, Jaković and Johnson earn caps in friendly
Canada fell 1-0 to Greece Wednesday in an international friendly, though MLS was well represented in the Canadian ranks as Toronto FC’s Dwayne De Rosario and Adrian Cann and D.C. United’s Dejan Jakovic all started and went the full 90.
Real Salt Lake’s Will Johnson started and played 82 minutes before being subbed off.
Cann and Jakovic formed the Canadian central defense in Stephen Hart’s 4-2-3-1, and he generally kept the Greeks quiet in front of 'keeper Milan Borjan.
The only goal of the game came midway through the second half when right back Adam Straith was unable to handle a Greek cross, clearing the ball to an unmarked Ioannis Fetfatzidis. The Olympiacos attacker made no mistake from 15 yards, going upper-90 and leaving Borjan flat-footed.

Dynamo defender's winner gives Canucks their first win of 2011
A goal by Houston Dynamo defender Andre Hainault was the difference on Tuesday as Canada won their first match of the year, 1-0, over Belarus.
The match was a closed-door friendly played in Antalya, Turkey, and pitted the Canucks against the 37th-ranked Belarusians.
Canada were the more aggressive side in the opening half and went into the halftime break up 4-0 on corner kicks and outshooting the Belarusians 4-2. Yet the Canucks had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard, and the first 45 minutes ended scoreless.
The second half started more evenly, with a couple of Belarus substitutions bringing a bit of fire to the match. The Canadians were up to the task, however, and in the 58th minute they finally broke the deadlock.

Dunfield, Ricketts net for Canucks in final tuneup before Gold Cup
TORONTO — Tosaint Ricketts’ dramatic injury-time goal lifted Canada to a 2-2 draw with Ecuador at BMO Field on Wednesday night in the Canucks' final warm-up before next week's Gold Cup.
Ricketts, who was a late attacking substitution for Stephen Hart’s side, potted his first international goal after receiving a quick free kick on the edge of the Ecuadorean penalty area, catching the visitors flat-footed as they argued with the referee.
The late strike capped off an exciting match in which both teams looked confident in moving the ball around.
Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Terry Dunfield opened the scoring in the 24th minute after receiving a nice pass from Josh Simpson, who had beaten a pair of defenders the left wing. Dunfield found himself all alone from 25 yards out, and sent a laser into the upper right corner of Marcelo Elizaga’s goal.
The strike was Dunfield’s first for Canada at the senior level.

Sting of 2007 semifinal loss still there for Hutchinson, de Guzman
DETROIT — After four long years, Canada finally get a shot at redemption against the United States.
The last time the two sides faced each other was in the semifinal round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2007, a game that ended in controversy. Midfielder Atiba Hutchinson — having intercepted a ball headed backward by American defender Oguchi Onyewu — thought he had leveled the score in stoppage time, but referee Benito Archundia rescinded the goal due to an offside call by his assistant.
The decision left the Canadian players shocked, and it allowed the Americans to advance to the final — a game they won over archrivals Mexico.
Four years later, and the Canucks say that the ending to that game still stings.

1-1 tie with Panama eliminates Canucks, who now look ahead towards W.Cup qualifiers
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Canada came into this Gold Cup with arguably its greatest base of talent in men’s national team history. They leave with their tail between their legs, eliminated at the group stage for the first time in three tournaments.
In the minutes immediately after their 1-1 draw with Panama on Tuesday at Livestrong Sporting Park that effectively knocked them out — even before the US win over Guadeloupe that officially put the nail in the Maple Leaf coffin — there was one simple word to sum it all up: disappointment.
“We were so close,” Vancouver midfielder Terry Dunfield lamented to MLSsoccer.com. “No one wants to go home and ... it’s back to the Whitecaps now.”
Canada were barely 60 seconds from securing a victory over Panama when Luis Tejada poked home a goalmouth scramble in second-half stoppage time that evened up matters and saw the Red Tide clinch top spot in Group C. As Panama celebrated wildly, Canada stood around in disbelief, knowing they blew their chance to go on.
But they also know they shot themselves in the foot time and again in their three group-stage games by continuously failing to put the ball in the back of the net against the US, Guadeloupe and Panama. Canada failed to score a single goal in the run of play in this tournament, their only two strikes coming from the penalty spot courtesy of Dwayne De Rosario.
“At the end of the day, if you don’t score, you don’t win,” head coach Stephen Hart said in the postgame press conference. “Simple as that.”

Gold Cup Commentary: Questions still linger for Canada

After surprising Gold Cup flop, Canucks have issues to address
Despite a veteran-heavy team with loads of CONCACAF experience, Canada crashed out of the Gold Cup on Tuesday night after giving up a late goal to draw Panama 1-1 in the final game of the group stage.
The early exit represents Canada’s worst showing at the continental championship since 2005, a stunning outcome for a side full of optimism heading into this year’s tournament.
With the Canadians’ lackluster performance in the books, a number of questions come to mind ahead of World Cup qualification, which begins for the Canucks in September of this year.

Canada falls just short against Germany
Germany 2 Canada 1
http://media.mmgdailies.topscms.com/images/9f/7f/43484ea74f9fbdc5595780c27376.jpeg
While this match ended up as the German victory that most pundits had predicted, Canada legitimately served notice that they are a genuine contender for a World Cup title and showed just how far they have come as a team in recent years.
Considering that Canada lost 5-0 to Germany the last time the teams met in a World Cup, this was an impressive performance by the Canadians, especially given the circumstances. While there is no point in speculating how this one might have turned out if Sinclair had been able to finish her early chance in the German box, it was plain to see that with some better finishing and a couple of instances of better defending on the German goals, Canada could have come out of this one with a victory or at least a draw.

Four star France defeat Canada
France cruised to a 4-0 win over Canada in their Group A meeting in Bochum with Gaetane Thiney becoming the first Les Bleues player to score a brace at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the process.
The Juvicy forward, making her 50th appearance for the Bruno Bini’s side, scored in either half in a match which France dominated from start to finish. Such was the extent of their supremacy that Canada failed to register a shot on target during the entire 90 minutes.

Canada: Mission 2014?
http://www.rednationonline.ca/Portals/0/article_photos/mission2014.jpg
I sat and watched the entirety of the World Cup Qualifying draw and as each country was drawn in each region I had more than a few fistpumps of joy. But nothing compared to the draw for Canada.
Before I get into how lucky Canada truly was for this draw, I’m going to address the feeling of dread that Canadian fans get when these draws come around.
Under no circumstance should Canadian fans feel dread when these draws take place. CONCACAF is a region in which Canada should be able to advance to the pre-hex round with no problems. And much of the dread was around whether drawing Guatemala would be a potential short-circuit for Canadian football.

Hart: No underdogs in World Cup Qualifying
http://www.rednationonline.ca/Portals/0/article_photos/hart_aug_4_11.jpg
With the Canadian Men’s National Team having recently learned the specifics surrounding their draw for their 2014 World Cup Qualification cycle, Stephen Hart and the Canadian Soccer Association held a conference call with the media to discuss Hart’s thoughts on the draw and his preparations for first round of World Cup qualifying. With many CMNT supporters quite positive about the fact that Canada will initially face off against world soccer minnows in the form of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Puerto Rico and Saint Lucia, the Canadian Men’s National Team Head Coach indicated that while he is confident of Canada’s chances heading into the opening round of qualification, Canada won’t be taking any team lightly.

Hart announces squad for World Cup qualifiers

Men’s Canadian National Team Head Coach has announced his 19-man roster for Canada’s first two World Cup qualifying matches as Canada begins the long road of attempting to qualify for Brazil 2014. The Canadian national team will begin its qualifying campaign against St. Lucia at BMO Field in Toronto on September 2nd and will then head to Puerto Rico for their second fixture on September 6th.
Hart has called up sixteen players who were involved in Canada’s 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad, as well as strikers Iain Hume and Olivier Occean and defender Ante Jazic.
“There were some complications in picking the squad. I wanted to pick players who were playing, but it really didn’t work out that way because a number of positions could not be filled. But with those that were available I thought we got the best possible squad together,” said Hart on a conference call with members of the media on Wednesday afternoon.

The Canadian Men’s National Team kicks off their arduous journey to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil Friday night as they take on CONCACAF minnows St. Lucia. The mantra all week has been not looking past any team and Stephen Hart’s initial selection for the squad reflects that, as nearly man for man he has called up what many would call the best senior players available. In St. Lucia, Canada are taking on the 187th FIFA ranked team in the world, and a side that are composed of mostly domestic players with a few based out of Trinidad and Tobago. Without a doubt, the Canucks are heavy favourites and that is without taking a home match into consideration. There is really no reason to think that Canada cannot leave this match with their arm raised, and in St. Lucia have an opponent that they can start their qualifying out with a good performance.

Canucks focus on themselves ahead of first step toward Brazil '14
TORONTO — The first step of a long journey is often the hardest.
For Canada, the first step towards Brazil 2014 begins Friday night against 184th-ranked St. Lucia, an opponent that is statistically one of the easiest they’ve ever faced in World Cup qualifying.
"As far as we're concerned, we're not even considering that,” Canada coach Stephen Hart said of St. Lucia’s low ranking and the psychological effect it may have on his players knowing that they are huge favorites to win the game.
“We have not spoken at all about being overwhelming favorites,” he said, making it clear that he doesn’t want his players feeling overconfident. “We are not trusting any sort of discussion like that.”
In recent cycles, Canada bypassed the initial stages of CONCACAF qualification, meaning that they’ve never had to play many of the smaller Caribbean nations that inhabit the earlier rounds.
Until now, that is.
Besides the unfamiliar situation of heading into the match as clear favorites, the Canadians have to contend with an opponent that rarely plays international games, and thus is hard to prepare for given the dearth of information available.
That’s not much of a concern, said Hart.

After a critical victory Friday night over St. Lucia, Canada looks to build momentum in the Second Round of World Cup Qualifying as they travel south to the fortress that is known as Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium to take on Puerto Rico. Canada went through some trying moments in their opening fixture, but in the end getting the important three points is all that matters, as does the fact their two other competitors drew their match to put them clear on top of the table.
http://www.rednationonline.ca/Portals/0/article_photos/canvpr_pic1_sept5_11.jpg
Puerto Rico will be glad to be at home and look to make a statement as they have been showing signs that they will begin to take international football competitions more seriously. Canada once again needs to be weary going into this match, but most importantly have to start showing more confidence in their play. Puerto Rico will present a much more professional looking side than St. Lucia, but the quality is still in the Canucks favour who should be able to see how valuable a win will go in getting through this round, and put out the display to ensure they remain first in Group D.

Iain Hume struck late in the first half while substitutes Simeon Jackson and Tosaint Ricketts each scored at the end of the second half for the Canucks, who remain in first place with a two-point lead in the group.

A torrid opening 45 minutes from striker Simeon Jackson paved the way for a record-breaking victory for Canada against hosts St. Lucia on Matchday 3 of CONCACAF’s second round of World Cup qualifying on Friday.
The Canadians cruised to a 7-0 win — their largest victory in an official match — powered by a first half hat-trick from Jackson, the 24-year-old attacker who had previously scored just three times for his national side.
"We've got a big game [vs. Puerto Rico] in Toronto, and the whole second half [vs. St. Lucia] was about managing the game and managing our energy levels," Hart said, "because we know Puerto Rico are going to be looking for a result. This one's over with and we can breathe a little bit and enjoy it for the night, but back to busines tomorrow morning."

Canucks break goal drought, DeRo pulls even atop all-time charts
TORONTO — If Canada had a point to prove after a couple of frustrating performances, they certainly did their best to do so with a resounding 4-0 victory over St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday night in the final World Cup qualification match of the year.
Goals by Olivier Occean, Dwayne De Rosario, Josh Simpson and Tosaint Ricketts lifted the Canadians to the win, which capped off a second-round group stage that Canada had clinched prior to the kickoff at BMO Field.
In stark contrast to the frustrating 0-0 draw between the two sides four days earlier in St. Kitts, this match was a much more open affair as the Canadians looked to put some goals on the board for the first time after going scoreless in two matches.
Canada found lots of space up front and, through the hard work of forwards Ricketts and Simpson, created a few good runs into the attacking third in the opening stages.
Despite the Canadians’ newfound enthusiasm for going forward, it was actually the visitors who got the first real chance of the match, as they rang a shot off Kenny Stamatopoulos’ left post after a quick counterattack at the quarter-hour mark.

The accolades just keep coming for Dwayne De Rosario.
After already having secured the Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player awards in MLS this past season, the D.C. United star was named Canada’s men's Player of the Year on Wednesday.
De Rosario earned the honor based on a stellar year in which he scored 16 goals and 12 assists in league play. His goal total, split between three teams over the MLS season, was the highest of his illustrious career so far.
In addition to the big numbers he put up at the club level, De Rosario also notched four goals for the Canadian national team in 2011, the most recent of which put the 33-year-old into a tie for top spot on Canada’s all-time goal-scoring chart.

TORONTO – The Canadian national team will kick off its 2012 calendar with a friendly against Armenia on Feb. 29 in Cyprus, the Canadian Soccer Association announced on Tuesday.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides. For Stephen Hart’s squad, the friendly will be the first test since a successful round of World Cup qualifying ended last November.
The 46th-ranked Armenians – who were a last-minute replacement opponent after a scheduled friendly vs. New Zealand fell through – will provide a good challenge as Hart looks to prepare Canada for their next phase of World Cup qualification, which is slated to begin June 8 in Cuba.

TORONTO – The Canadian Soccer Association's announcement on Thursday that all four men’s national team home matches in 2012 will be held in Toronto has sparked a passionate response across the country.
When the news hit, fans took to social media and message boards to chime in on the decision, and the reaction was predictably mixed. While Toronto-area supporters were understandably elated to find out that they’d be able to see the national team in person four times this year, some fans from elsewhere in Canada questioned the move.
I think that it’s kind of shameful that if you’re trying to grow the game across the country and get people to follow the Canadian game, and not their grandfather’s team of Italy or England, that these games aren’t in Vancouver or Montreal or Edmonton,” Graham said. “Let’s face it, why should I cheer for the Canadian national team if they never play where I live?”
