this is tough, kahn is the only one of those 5 without any silverware for germany but ironically he's the one i'd pick by the barest of margins over maier. Maier was both world and euro champ but germany had so many stars back then, kahn was germany's biggest star at the last world cup and was even named the player of the tornament (the only time ever for a goalkeeper). Both should be rated with the best ever, no matter what country. My 3rd place would go to schumacher, despite the fact that he played a big role in germany's loss to argentina in the '86 final(like kahn in '02), overall he contributed a lot to germany's sucsess in the '80's. 4th place there's not much to choose between koepke and illgner, both were great in penalty shootout victory's over england (dosn't get any sweeter). Others who should probably get a mention are toni turek('54 wc) and hans tillkowski('66 wc) but iv'e never seen them play except for brief highlights so it's hard to judge them.

i didnt mention turek, becuase, even though we won the wc, we lost a match 8-3 against hungary. I didnt think after such a drubbing we should include a goalkeeper in all time greats. I think Maier and Kahn are very close to close. Kahn, is a living legend no doubt, but he has failed in critical moments ( final of wc, final of CL against Man Utd). He has a couple of penlaty saves to his credit, best among them in final of CL final against Valencia. Kahn has had a weaker defence in front of him, as compared to Maier. I think Koepke is very under rated, he has had excellent spells in marseille and the NT. He was extremely outstanding at euro96.

u might want to reconsider toni turek, he never played in that 8-3 drubbing, herberger decided to rest him along with most of the starting regulars for that match, turns out a guy by the name of heinz kwiatkowski played in goal in that match. btw i agree about koepke being underated but i'd still have him in 4th position.

oops, didnt know that. saw a movie called- " das wunder von bern", it shows turek to have played in that match. Or maybe i didnt notice properly. Thanks for the correction anyways. MOst of my opinion on the wc54 team ans fritz wlater is based on the movie and some old clips.
