I have a MAJOR PROBLEM with my school program. The coach looks more at athletic ability than actual skill. For example there was another player who plays basketball and is very skilled in that. I play on a Premier/ state level soccer team. When it came time to putting players on teams, she was chosen over me solely on her athletic ability. Should I be upset about this? I don't want to hold a grudge but I'm really pissed. Can someone relate or help me at all? I understand that athletic ability important but more important than skill and knowing the dynamics of the game?

And what are you asking for in means of something that we could offer you? I would suggest just be what he wants, perform in other aspects of sports.

I'm sorry for the confusion. What I'm asking is what aspect of the game is comes first on the list? Am I just being dumb or do I really have a reason to be so upset? I'm athletic, I've been told that I'm fast by many coaches, but this coach said that being on the top team for basketball helped this student. Did I mention that this person had not trained for soccer at all in over 2 years? Who is wrong in the situation, me or the coach, and should I stick to the school program or find a different place to play.

i suppose, u shud juz look else where, if the coach dosnt appreciate yur ability then find another place where the coach does

there is a point where fitness comes into football. but if u relly dunt have much stamina, then mayb try playing five a side football

It seems like the coach is picking favorites. Soccer is a game you have to be exposed to for a long time in order to be good at it. What I'm trying to say, is evan if the case was bare athletic ability, that other girl isn't going to be able to have a touch on the ball, not going to be able to control it, shoot it, pass it, and know what to do in a lot of the situations you are faced with in soccer. If you don't have the soccer mentality, then I don't think your athletic ability matters.

Like Rickster said though, there is a point where the athletic ability of a player is considered, an instance that I can think of is, say, someone has amazing speed, agility, they have good stamina, and they are just in all round good shape. Although they lack a lot of the skills in soccer that someone with experience has, the coach might think it's a good idea to start training the person who is new to the sport, with the idea that, once mastering the basics, that person will be an elite player, because unlike most players, he/she has the Speed, agility, and stamina that most players have to train for years to achieve.

I don't agree with that decision, I don;t beileve it's a common decision at highschool level soccer, still sounds like you got screwed. From what I can tell the coach made a very unprofessional decision, passing up a primere level player will hurt any highschool team, I'm sure.

It's never fun when all your friends are playing for your highschool, and you're playing with a few randoms on a club team or pick up gang. I'd try to see if you could work things out before leaving the school team, just calm down, and make your decision for solid reasons, don't make a decision because you're angry, you'll end up regretting it. I'd see if there's something you can do before leaving.

Ur coach sounds like a jerk off. Basketball has nothing to do with soccer, unless of course ur a keeper. U have every right to be pissed!

As others have said, if the coach doesn't appreciate your ability then yeah, find another place to play. But in saying that, it is school soccer... so finding another place to play might be difficult depending on whatever rules you have where you are (ie: we can't just play for another school unless we switch to that school... and even if we switch, you have to be there for a full year... or something like that :p - I actually think it may have changed in the past year or 2).

As you said, you play premier/state as well, so stick with that. And if you can't change to another school and play there, then just use it is an opportunity to improve your fitness and rise to the coaches expectations (whatever those may be...). You could always talk to the coach as well. And you have every right to be pissed off, but if you do decide to talk to the coach, stay calm or you could end up in a worse situation ;).

It doesn't matter if she hasnt trained for 2 years if she is better than you. Don't worry about it. Just show your coach what you've got and maybe he'll realize his mistake.

i do think you can be kidna mad, because i believe high school coaches know a whole lot less than the club coaches. a lot of times they're lookin for the biggest fastest, most athletic. but soccer players are great athletes and becoming a better athlete would do more than just get you on that team you know, it'd help your entire game. trust me if you have the talent you have now pluse as good athletic ability as anyone at your age, the coaches won't be able to resist

wat position do you play?
if you played midfield or defender you dont have to be fast.. u need to have mental abilities and solid positions, and understanding tactics n areas where are most easy to attack. but u do need alot of stamina.

as what link said, the coach could be picking that girl bcos shes fast n then train her from there, but in highskool its abit to late to train skill. but i started playing when i was in yr10 n my skill is relly good, but it was loads of persistence n commitment tat relly brought me up tis far

My club coach says that I'm pretty versatile when it comes to placing me on the field, though I can be a little dangerous playing fullback, I tend to cause fouls kind of close to the goal box. I feel that I'm weak playing fullback. I feel that I'm best placed as a center half-back or left winger. The coach who I have described in early posts has done it yet again. The students who are just entering high school and made it on the top team for basketball have been told that they too will make the top team for soccer. This is what I have been thinking: maybe I should join another school sport? I was thinking track and field. I don't want to quite soccer, I have played it sense I could walk and I love the game with a passion. I need some more help.

in need of advice

I would first ask the coach "What does she have that I don't?" and take it from there.
Good Luck.

I agree. That way, if he can't find anything logical, you know you have a great reason to play somewhere else. I don't think that picking up another sport would be a bad thing, but not if you're only picking it up for the reputation and not the fun. And whatever it is, don't let it interfere with your performance if that's what you love. ;)
