no man, stop thinking about lifting weights and gaining muscels at that age.
Just play sports like basketball and soccer to improve your height and lots of other things you can improve at that age and drink lots of milk and nutrients, trust me it's still working for me, and Im 15. :D

i think start when u relly feel that u need to improve ure strength and its affected how u play otherwise its a waste of time cuz it has minor sid affects
"minor sid affects"? no actually it has serious side effects. If you use weights expecially when using your joints at an early age with heavy equipment then you can reduce your growth and eventually cause arthritis when you get older...etc.

I weigh 145, 6% body fat, 5'6''. I play soccer for an amazing compettive team and my high school with 600 people in the grade. I'm fine, im in shape, and no one can check me. My trainer said as long as i stretch, the amount of muscle mass in my core and arms shouldn't slow me down.

so are there really any dangers of lifting weights as long as you dont go over what your can do....like if you weigh 130......dont do like 130.....do more like 60 and dont over do it.......if you get what am saying...would that be ok?

I'm 14, 5'7", 146. I'm gonna wait till next year when I'm in highschool to start to lift weights. It's much more important to have the skills before the body. I would suggest waiting till 9th Grade/15 yrs. old to start lifting weights because it won't help you play any better untill high school where sports demand a physical presence. To sum it up, wait till 9th grade and when you start make sure you have someone at least a junior who has been doing it for several years to help you or better yet a gym teacher/physical trainer.

Lifting CAN stunt your growth if you do it too intensely. Ever see pictures of bodybuilders and wonder why they are all 5'5" or so? It's because they start lifting when they're 12. That's not to say it will happen to you if you lift, but there is a definite possibility. For now, I'd say work on your skill and don't worry about muscle until you're older. (18,19, maybe even 20)

in my humble opinion, one should not lift weights til 18. when you are almost completely developed. plus you should get someone with experience to teach you proper ways to exercise, lifting techniques, etc.

i would suggets against doing weights at your age..but if u really wanna build yourself up do sit ups and press ups every 2 days or so....do one set of 20 of each and build yourself up to doin 3 sets of 20...
this way you are only using your own body weight and u wont risk straining or damaging yourself...
theres plenty of time for weights in a couple years !!!

well basically your gaining alot of muscle meaning you can't run as fast or/and as much because muscles need alot of water and sweating releases water.
And also swimming would be harder since muscle tissue sinks, so you better be a good swimmer. :D
overall gaining muscle through weight lifitng should only be for body builders or any other kind of special training. other than that just play outside and gain natural muscle and you'll be fine.

You seriously need to get your facts together NuMbER15, even in other threads.
Speaking of getting your facts straight, where is your conclusive proof of this? are you speaking from personal experience?
Or, are you simply one of the billions of people worldwide who have a bagfull of excuses not to train hard because its apparently dangerous, when all these "risktakers" are reaping the benefits of their training, better health, performance etc.
to the OP, there is nothing wrong with weight training at your age, its not necessary, but thats what people will tell you because they havent got the drive to do anything about their own lifestyle.
the main argument you will hear is that if youre moving big weights itll stunt your growth, but mate you wont be lifting big weight at that age, if you are, you belong in a record book. Train hard and enjoy the benefits.

Wait until you're done your growth spurt before you begin seriously. Should start slowing down at 16-17. For now? Build up conditioning.
If you do weights, make them VERY light and do many, many reps. This should build up muscle stamina, just like running.
The most important thing is to not get injured or stunt your growth in development. Make sure you get plenty of calcium, as well.

Ahem, no offense guys but I think some of you have it wrong in a way. There is a concept called 'Over-Training'. Its when you push your body to extremes way too often and work beyond the body's ability to recover. The work out wil backfire and your performance will go down hill. The Body needs to have a good amount of about 48 hours to fully recover the muscle groups targeted. Some people believe that your muscles are growing while your lifting weights and performing bicep roll curls or bench pressing loads. However its not the case. Your muscles grow and get stronger when your at rest. And then you work out some more after they do and give them rest and they keep enlarging. The body needs to recover the aftermath of the impact placed on the muscle group(s). But when your working out the over 3 muscle groups, and then work them out again over 2 times a week, your body will not get the appropriate time to recover, thus leading to even decrease in strength.
Now in this guys case, yeah you can work out, if you do it correctly. Give your muscles rest, don't do the early mistakes I did when I fist started. I saw no results, nothing at all, but then I followed what experienced individuals taught and I finally had mass coming. And you get larger and larger depending on the amount of weight you imply. I am stronger then I ever used to be. Just by following the rules of the human body.
But bro, I do not see why you should start working out now. You're 14 and its way too early to give you results. If you look to stay in form do some minor lifting, crunches and push ups. But if you want to actually become muscular, I suggest you give it another 5 years for your body to successfully complete the cycle of maturing of the muscles and then start. So if you want to keep in form, yes start some exercise. If your seeking to get a macho man body, then its not going to work since your body is growing naturally at the time of being a teenager.

I started lifting at 14 and it made my dick grow bigger and I've also grown 6 inches vertically since than and I am 6 foot 1. Anyways the sooner you start lifting the sooner you will start handling skinnier chicks at night, on the other hand you will still be lifting heavy girls if you don't lift. So in that case if lifting does prevent you from growing, which I totally disagree with, lifting heavy chicks has the same effect and you choose your trade off.

Well its a fact that lifting weights at a young age stunts your growth but at the same time it depends what type of lifting....and how often you do it.
If you lift weights laying down or use dumbells, then it won't stunt your growth.
If you do the Governator type of lifting then it will def. stunt your growth... I say start off with the regular bench pressing or stick to push up =D....Then once you turn 18, when you usually know that you won't grow an inch longer..Then thats when you start doing full on lifting and training..

if you want to build muscle mass with weights that won't happen until you are through puberty. up until that time you can not build muscle mass because you need the adult hormones to do that. building muscle mass with weights and weight training in general should never be done without thorough instruction in technique and an age appropriate training schedule. more harm than good will come of a teenager or preteen thrown into a weight room without proper instruction and supervision and a specific training program tailored to their individual needs. sooo....unless you are through puberty, have expert personal training in technique, have a personal individualized and supervised training program don't take a chance of hurting yourself. If those things are in place, and you are physically ready for it, strength training may be appropriate in a comprehensive training program that also addresses agility, speed, and nutrition. Have fun! train safe!!!

As I've posted on another forum:
I've only been here a short time, but there's something I want to address. It appears on this site there is this rumor that lifting heavy (reps 2-5) at a young age (15-16 years old) will cause damages to an individual such as disc damage, joint problems that will later turn into artheritas issues, tendon tears, and other such injuries.
If one is truly concerned about their height being stunted due to heavy weight training a simple X-ray can be taken to assure the lifter the ends of their bones are hard and not soft and hallow.
I would like to settle that at the age of 15-16 the human body is very capable of handing a workout such as Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength which is based around heavy lifting (3x5 for the core lifts such as Bench, Squat, Deadlift). Mark Rippetoe is among the most well respected and acknowledged in the weight lifting/training field, one of his books (co-authored it) is "Starting Strength", you can look at it at this website. http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Stren.../dp/0976805405
Back to the issue at hand, lifting heavy while "young". The load of the exercise is not what causes injuries in nearly all cases, regardless of age. It is the lack of discipline in form that creates injuries. Sadly many young lifters fall subject to injuries because the one(s) that are suppose to be teaching them how to lift, are teaching them incorrect form, or neglecting to correct their form.
Another problem with lifting heavy is also the reps near the end of the set. This is where nearly all injuries occur, once again, with the breakdown of form. Ex. Throwing your body into a bicep curl is an excellent way of tearing your bicep. This is also why people must use caution when using heavy weights, and anytime handling weights.
Like with anything in life one has to be responsible when lifting weights. If I'm struggling on my last rep of a bench I don't twist and turn risking an injuring to my shoulders, I either can finish it in good form or ask for assistance from a spotter. If one is responsible enough to go into the 2-5 rep range there is no reason why one should not.
According to Thomas Kurz and studies by Sulmitsev/Krumm...
Youths 11-12 years old can use weights up to 30% of their bodyweight
Youths 13-14 can use weights up to 50% of their bw.
Youths 15-16 can use weights up to 100% of their bodyweight.
Practical Programming, page 252. (Mark Rippetoe as author)
Much data shows that weight training does not diminish growth in children. Carla (5'7 1/2") and her 13-year-old daughter Samantha Nichols (top), national junior weightlifting champion since age 9, provide compelling evidence that the stature of genetically similar individuals is not affected adversely by weightlifting in their youth. Sammi (bottom) is shown here at 5' 5 1/2" and 5'8" in pictures taken about one year apart. Weight training may someday "stunt" her growth, but it needs to hurry up.

im 15,6'1" 180lbs . im a freshmen in high school and i've been lifting weights since 8th grade or so.Lifting weights has actually made me lose weight and i've become more physically fit than i ever was before. I lost all the fat i had in my arms and chest. I weighed like 210 before i started lifting weights and now im down to 180. i suggest you start lifting weights when you think your height is perfect but i dont think you want to be 5'5" for the rest of your live so i would say start lifting weights when your around 5'11" or so. The age doesnt matter its the height of that person. but dont lift too much or else you'll become to heavy for soccer.

Assuming you are 14-13 year, don't start benching yet. I know in your age muscles might be impressive, but your body will stop growing. Handweights are fine. There's also other exercises like pushups that will make your arms stronger if that's what you're looking for.

Yeah there's no prood that weightlifting disrupts your growth, but certain exercises like pull ups for example shouldn't be done at an early age because you can really screw up your back while it is still developing (nothing to do with testosterone.)
Saraj Fanatico
04-21-2010, 10:48 PM
Yeah I would say that is possible. But in terms of actual growth, its a ridiculous myth. If anything it is good to work out a little when younger as your body releases a lot of testosterone when a child is entering puberty and it helps your body recover faster after work outs.

Yeah but you don't want your kid or kids in general fuking up their backs or other vital parts of the body at an early age. They should first be educated and know what weight lifting is all about. A good age to start lifting is 13 or 14 years of age.

Yes. 14 is the age when you can start lifitng weights. Ages below 14 should only use body weight exercises to increase their strength and power.
