Real Madrid on Thursday launched a campaign to raise funds to help the South East Asian nations affected by the tsunami.
"In Asia they need our solidarity," said Real Madrid's Vice President and the club's sporting director Emilio Butragueno at the presentation of the campaign with the presence of the entire Madrid squad. "The club feels the responsibility to react and contribute to help and rebuild the most affected areas."
Butragueno said the club has opened a special bank account for fans in Spain and abroad to make their own direct contributions and will place glass cases at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium in its weekend match against Zaragoza and at the club's official stores to collect money.
"We, soccer players, have always been greeted with affection in that part of the world. Now it's our turn to respond with support and help to hundreds of thousands of people that need us," said Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez.
"We have to try to make things easier for those who survived the tragedy," Gonzalez added.
The Dec. 26 quake and the massive waves it triggered smashed the coastlines of 11 countries and killed an estimated 150,000 people.
It was tragic incident. They are saying that it could happen to the western coast of America in a few years, or apperantly very soon.
