Figo on outer as Real Madrid's Luxemburgo prefers Beckham
tribalfootball.com - January 4, 2005

Luis Figo is being linked with a move away from Real Madrid this year.

The Portugal international's contract expires in 2006 and he is yet to hear from Real president Florentino Perez about a new deal.

DiarioSport says Figo is upset with Perez as he has been ignored while the likes of Roberto Carlos and Zinedine Zidane have been signed to new deals over the past 12 months.

Its been suggested new coach Wanderlei Luxemburgo intends to play David Beckham in Figo's position on the right-side of midfield for the second-half of the season, with part of the reason being he doesn't regard the Portuguese as a long-term option.

Figo declared last summer that if he didn't receive a new contract offer from Real by December that he would start looking for a new club.

yeah.. figo can play on the both left and right.. what luxemburgo said may not be reliable as it doesnt come out from him personally.. i will seriously be very fustrated and disappointed with the coach if he ever ever does that.. even so. i dun think the fans would allow becks to take figo's place.

Figo can get help Raul who is his best friend in Real! All Figo need is for Raul to speak some word.

Luxembourg is right...

Beckham has very long and accurate passes that he can make better then anyone in the team enabling him to set up any forward before the defence will notice his passes (if you watch him you know what I mean).

Beckham is a "secret weapon" which he said in realmadrid.com and the only way to use him is if you know HOW to use him.

Figo is a very good player to Real but right now I think Beckham can do much more contribution if Luxembourg can use him in the right place of the field.

And YES Luxembourg did say that...ice... read it at the website.

Kinda shocking.
But you will get it with a team full of stars. Some will be benched, and that will anger them.
Personally I found it crazy, and then it hit me, the man is doing something for the club, Del Bosque anyone?

I think that Luis Figo should follow Pavel Nedved's suit and hang up his boots in 2006. He is still a very instrumental player in Real but I would like to see him retire before he really hits the bucket. Zidane is locked in until 2007 but I personally feel that he's not as effective as Figo right now. Figo has aged more gracefully than Zizou has I think. Overall, Zidane's legend will be much much greater though so perhaps this is why he's getting preferential treatment from Real's management.

If I were Luxembourgo, I'd play Figo on the left (Figo used to move to this side in the portugal national team so he should be fine), Beckham on the right and have Zizou and Helguera in central midfield. Then I'd have Raul, Ronaldo and Owen fight for 2 spots up front. I would probably pick Raul and Owen because I dislike Ronaldo and believe he is insecure and jealous of Adriano. :D
