I was against the purchase of Charisteas. Young Babel was developing quite well in the league, and now he'll most likely get benched. Furthermore, I believe Charisteas is a player with limited qualities, and certainly not as technical as Ibrahimovic. I have a feeling Ronald Koeman and Arie van Eijden have together made yet another mis-buy. But maybe, concerning Greek strikers that Ajax have bought, it's 3rd time lucky, as Machlas and Anastasiou are well established failures in the Ajax shirt.

Machlas wasn't really a failure, I would say. But he wasn't great.

As for Anastasiou, he was bought as a back-up and got more playing time than planned. I don't really think much of him, hes not even on the NT for Greece.

As for Charisteas, we'll see. I hope he does good, and the sale of Wesley Sonck will give Babel opportunity to start. =)

Jol will snub Ajax, claims Van der Sar

Fulham goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is confident Tottenham head coach Martin Jol will resist the lure of Ajax and remain at White Hart Lane.

Jol is reported to be Ajax's preferred choice to succeed Ronald Koeman - who resigned on Friday - after impressing during his five-month reign as Spurs boss.

The Dutchman pledged his future to the north London club after the 2-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday, and Holland goalkeeper van der Sar is convinced his compatriot wants to remain in the Premiership.

'Martin is making an impact in Holland. When someone from our country does well in a big competition then people take notice,' the former Ajax star told the London Evening Standard.

'I imagine Ajax are making a list of who they want - and if someone like him is doing well in the Premiership then it's natural he would be included.

'But I don't think Martin Jol is going to leave Tottenham. Ajax is a bigger club, but the English league is a bigger competition.'

Managerless Ajax open talks with Blind

Ajax, who have been linked with Tottenham coach Martin Jol, have held discussions with Danny Blind over the vacant head coaching position at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Blind, who is currently in charge of Ajax's youth program, is also scheduled for more talks as the club search for a successor to Ronald Koeman, who stepped down over a week ago.

The former Dutch international defender confirmed: 'I have spoken with Ajax. More talks will follow, and I will say nothing more so as not to make a mess of the talks.'

Ajax had refused to rule out a move for Jol but the Spurs boss had rejected all talk of a link.

Only two players have made more league appearances for Ajax than Blind, who represented the team on 372 occasions between 1986-1999.

Sjaak Swart played 463 matches for the club while Wim Suurbier totalled 393.

Indeed lets hope that 3 times is the charm, and this will make some important goals, and not 2 goals when ajax is already 4-0 up.

And i definetly share the thought that Babel needs to develop more as a striker, since is origin is left wing attacker. Babel has potential, a lot of it, to become something great since van Basten/Bergkampm he looks like Kluivert, playing style and appearance, but he's got more potential then Kluivert..

Blind will not be accepted because Johan Cruijff wants his friend Neeskens, he advised him to Ajax, although that Blind has a clausule in his contract that he will be the next first manager when Koeman leaves. So, what kind of creative construction is gonna build to get Neeskens and please Blind is what time will tell us.

Blind wins first points

Danny Blind won his first match with Ajax 1 on Thursday. Willem II were defeated 2-0 in the Amsterdam ArenA. Ajax played well occasionally, mainly in the first half, but the team was too careless when finishing the chances. Nicolae Mitea made it 1-0 after 20 minutes, but Blind had to wait until the final minutes to be sure of three points. Babel made it 2-0 in the 90th minute.

Danny Blind's hard work of the past weeks seemed to pay off on Thursday. During the training sessions the most attention was given to the wing players: Nicolae Mitea and Mauro Rosales were repeatedly taken aside by mainly assistant coach Gerard van der Lem, who explained was what expected of them on the touchlines. And with good result. Rosales delivererd a number of fine crosses from the right. One of them found Mitea after 20 minutes and the little Romanian headed it behind goalkeeper Moens: 1-0
After a dificult opening stage of the match, Ajax got better and better. Willem II did hardly resist, only former Ajax player Kevin Bobson had a small opportunity in the first 45 minutes. Hatem Trabelsi and Hedwiges Maduro should have given Ajax a bigger lead, but the Ajax players were not sharp before the goal of Moens. Blind: ,,We forgot to make the redeeming 2-0 that this team needs. A 1-0 lead is not enough for this team to calmly play out the match.''

Therefore, Willem II stayed in the match somehow, without creating any real chances, even though Ajax sometimes were careless in the back. The home team kept attacking, but to no avail. Blind had to make some changes fifteen minutes before time, when Rosales suffered an ankle injury and he was replaced by Nourdin Boukhari, who went on to play on the left wing and Mitea moved to the right. Steven Pienaar, who played his 100th match for Ajax, went off and was replaced with Maxwell, who was benched for being in the stadium too late. Both substitutes showed the fans a nice combination on the left, but again the goaltending was careless. Eventually, Ryan Babel made it 2-0 a few minutes before the end when he headed in a free kick by Wesley Sneijder.

,,I have seen good things and bad things tonight'', Blind said after the match. ,,One of the good things was the play of Hedwiges Maduro.'' The midfielder played a strong match and was voted man of the match. ,,This is the Maduro like I know him from the youth teams. He has made a lot of progression the last few years. He is very stable, very social and he knows what he can and cannot do. And that is very important nowadays to be successful. He has good control over what he does and brings a steadying influence in midfield.''

Blind also showed his displeasure at times. ,,The last pass was no good too often. And we should find simpler solutions to certain situations. Yet the coach will be releived after the win. Before the match, he had indicated that a victory would boost his players' confidence. And a well-deserved victory it was.

i heard that the whoever the strikers at Ajax, they will go through a torrid time if they didn't managed to score as expected. Is that true?
I thought i saw one of your ex-player who gave an interview mentioned abt it.

Stryker06
12-17-2005, 10:56 AM
zlatan ibrahimovic mentioned that. there's some truth in that, but it's also been blown up a bit too much. usually it's, just like with pretty much every other club i suppose, the coach that has to hear bout it first when the results aren't going the right way.
but strikers are supposed to be scoring a lot of goals at ajax. but the thing is, probably not with many other clubs, is it more difficult for a striker to succeed than at ajax. an ajax striker has gotta have really specific qualities in order to be succesful. it has to do with the unique system that ajax plays. so i've been told. i can't quite describe what a striker specifically needs and what makes ajax's system so special, but what is true is that very few strikers have mananged to succeed at ajax over the past few years. among ajax fan bases you'll always find intersting debates whether the ajax management just bought a string of useless players, or that all these strikers were potentially quite good, but just couldn't adapt to the ajax culture.
over the past few years we've seen shota arveladze, gerald sibon, nikos machlas, wesley sonck, zlatan, mido, yannis anastasiou and the lastest player to try his luck at this complicated position is markus rosenberg.
some did quite well, others achieved only moderate success, while there were also a number who just turned out to be real flops.

Latest transfer info:

Ajax's striker Marcus Rosenberg has joined German side Werder Bremen as of immediately. The striker has obtained the nr. 9 and won't be able to face Ajax in the UEFA clash between the two teams since he has already come out for Ajax this season in the UEFA cup. ( good news for us ).
Signing fee has been rumored to be between the 3 and 4,5 million euro's.

Tottenham Hotspur and old Ajax player Edgar Davids will return to his former club with who'm he attained the Champions League trophy in '95.
The deal is as good as round and the only thing left is a mutual agreement between Ajax and Tottenham on the signing fee.
Both Tottenham and Ajax spokesmen have confirmed the deal.

Edgar Davids back with AJAX!!! he'll bring a great amount of experience and influence to the team, which will especially inspire the younger players.
Along with Stam Ajax now have another experienced player who was in the dream team of Holland NT during the '98 World Cup team.

Ajax became victor in a very hard fought battle, in the 70th minute defender Zdenek Grygera had to go off injured and trainer Henk Ten Cate already used all his subs, but still Ajax managed to score two goals and get the 3 points.

Honestly one of the best and most exciting games I've seen so far this season, high class football by both teams in a thrilling encounter.

Meanwhile current champions PSV Eindhoven lost 2 - 0 to Roda JC which leaves the gap between the nr. 1 and nr. 2 to 8 points.

Next week the classic encounter between Ajax Amsterdam - Feyenoord Rotterdam.
Whilst PSV Eindhoven face nr.3 of the table AZ Alkmaar.

Injury concerns are growing at Ajax, especially with the eye on the UEFA cup clash against Werder Bremen.

Left-backs Urby Emanuelson and Thomas Vermaelen will have to sit out for at least 4 weeks, missing ADO away and at least the first Werder game away.
Central defender Grygera is still out and it will be very questionable if he can make it to the UEFA game.

On another note, Brazillian player Leonardo who has lived here in Holland for almost his whole life, failed for the naturalisation test for him to become a full Dutchman and even opening the ability to play for the Dutch NT.
The new signing of Ajax will have to wait 6 months before he can take up the tests again.

With a weak point on the left-back position our line-up against ADO will be most likely:

------------------Stekelenburg------------------
Ogararu----Stam------Heitinga-----Lindenbergh
Gabri------------Sneijder-------------Davids
De Mul-----------Babel--------------Leonardo

Possibilities are pushing Davids back to LB, while putting Kenneth Perez on the left midfielder position. And the out-of-form striker Huntelaar could start in the line-up against a weak ADO to perhaps find his form back ?

0-3 for Ajax sunday, hopefully with a win we can put the pressure on PSV who have to start their game later on in the day against Sparta Rotterdam.

In any case.... AJAX!!! :smoking:

Source: Goal.com
After last summer’s mass exodus and Jaap Stam’s sudden withdrawal from the game on October 29 last year, Hedwiges Maduro followed up in January, when he joined Valencia for a reported 2.5-million-euros fee.

And yesterday, only hours before the 5-1 drubbing of Heracles, Ajax officially announced that they had reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid concerning the transfer of Johnny Heitinga. The 10-million move had in principle been agreed back on March 25.

Davids hints on retirement

And there’s more, as Edgar Davids told reporters that he’ll most probably not be playing in the red and white come next season. “It’s more than likely. I’m 98 per cent certain. If I do continue, it won’t be at Ajax.”

Although losing their most influential and experienced midfielder, as well as one of the most gifted defenders around, would arguably come as a bitter blow, Marco van Basten’s major problem would be to kick-start his new spell at the club without Huntelaar.

26.2 million – and rising

The 24-year-old sensational marksman has been linked with almost every single European powerhouse, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Milan and Internazionale. And even if Ajax don’t cash in on as much as the alleged 26.2-million price tag, it’s more than certain that selling Huntelaar will significantly help them ease their debt worries.

Huntelaar finished the regular season as the Eredivisie top scorer for a second time, as well as the competition’s MVP. And although he is expected to play with the Johan Cruijff Schaal and Beker holders in the play-offs, rumour has it that Ajax are already lining up a replacement ahead of next season.

Cvitanich tops the list

Getting the Number 1 on their wish list won’t be easy though. De Telegraaf reports that their primary target is the Argentine Darío Cvitanich, whom they watched in action several times before opening up talks with Banfield.

However, the 23-year-old forward, who’s scored 32 times in 93 outings with El Taladro and holds a Croatian passport too, has also attracted the interest of Espanyol and La Boca Juniors. The Spanish have reportedly made a 4.4-million offer to Cvitanich for a five-year contract, but a deal has yet to be struck.

Europe in his sights

“I’m flattered that they [Espanyol] are looking at me, but I’m staying on the margins of things. I can say, however, that the only team I will play for in Argentina is Banfield. If I am to play for another club, it will only be in Europe.” he told Spanish Diario Sport daily a couple of weeks ago.

In the mean time, Marca insisted that the Barcelona club had reached an oral agreement with Banfield in the region of five million. But the report has been denied by both parties and Espanyol actually stated that they can not afford that kind of money.

As far as Huntelaar is concerned, the Ajax captain has netted 36 times in 41 season appearances and handed out another eight assists in the league alone. In fact, he beat off competition by two of his Ajax team-mates, Luis Suárez and Kenneth Pérez, to be named the Eredivisie’s MVP.

Golden Shoe out of reach

Thirty-three of his goals were scored in league matches, but they weren’t enough to land him the ESM Golden Shoe award, which will most certainly end up in the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo, even though Manchester United’s Portuguese superstar has found the back of the net five times less.

Huntelaar could in fact be pimped to second place by a number of strikers, with Sevilla’s Luís Fabiano posing as the biggest threat.

SiN
04-23-2008, 01:18 AM
“The board of directors decided by majority to accept the offer of Ajax to sign Cvitanich for a fee of 11 million US dollars [6.9 million euros].” read a statement on the Argentine club’s official website.

The 23-year-old forward, who is also eligible to represent Croatia, has scored 12 goals in 23 outings with El Taladro in the Torneo Clausura of the Primera División alone and also attracted the interest from Copa Libertadores holders La Boca Juniors and Espanyol.

It is believed that Ajax will confirm the transfer later on Tuesday, after the closing of the Euronext stock exchange subsidiary in Amsterdam. In any case, Cvitanich will first have to pass a medical before agreeing personal terms with the Johan Cruijff Schaal and Beker holders.

According to Banfield, Cvitanich will stick with them until the end of the Torneo Clausura, in mid-June, before setting off to the Netherlands to become only the fourth Argentine footballer in the history of Ajax, after Ivan Gabrich (1996-’97), Mariano Juan (July ’96 – January 2000) and Mauro Rosales (August ’04 – January ’07).
