I know that Ajax plays an attracking 4-3-3 formation, but I'm curious as to the details of the formation. How are particular positions assigned? Do all three midfielders attack, or is one played defensively? Is the midfield only to pass up to the forwards or are they allowed to run with the ball as well? Is any position given a free role? Do the backliners stay at home, or are the wings allowed to carry the ball?
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In tough matches, a def mid is usually play in the centre of the 3 mids. Usually Galasek. In an easier match, Galasek usually plays right-half, and a real "Playmaker", such as vdVaart plays in the centre of mid. Other players such as Pienaar, Sneijder, and de Ridder can also play there.
The number 10 is allowed to run with the ball, and it's proven that many number 10's also score a lot of goals. This hasn't been the case in the last season or this season, but in the past number 10's such as Bergkamp and Litmanen have been top-scorers of Holland.
The back usually play 4 on a line, and usually one centre back plays slightly behind the other. It's usually a requirement for at least one centre back to have a very good long pass ability.
Wings are mainly required to give decent crosses, but they are also allowd to try and outplay their opponents, and occasionally go for goal, but usually they give assists.
