BELGRADE, March 25 (Reuters) - Partizan Belgrade crushed
Borac Cacak in a thumping 8-1 home win to stay top of the
Yugoslav championship on Saturday.
But local rivals Red Star Belgrade stepped up the pressure
at the top with a 1-0 win at Sutjeska Niksic to move above
Obilic Belgrade into second place.
So it's all down to the Derby on the 2nd of april...
Yugoslavia striker Mateja Kezman, the league's topscorer,
struck twice for Partizan to take his season's tally to 19 as
the leaders threatened to surpass their record 10-1 destruction
of Boran in 1996.
The other goals came from Djordje Tomic, Milan Stojanovski,
Vladimir Ivic, Mladen Krstajic, Milorad Pekovic and Ljubisa
Rankovic. Borac's sole reply came from Boban Gocanin.
Red Star, three points behind Partizan, were frustrated for
85 minutes by an outstanding performance from Sutjeska Niksic
goalkeeper Nenad Lukic, who is on loan from Obilic Belgrade.
Lukic saved a Red Star penalty and made a string of superb
saves before Dragan Stevanovic finally ended his resistance.
Obilic, trailing Red Star by a point, took an early lead
against Vojvodina Novi Sad with a long-distance shot from Sasa
Simonovic. But relentless pressure from the home side led to an
equaliser by Zoran Jankovic five minutes from time.
Partizan and Red Star, who both have a game in hand over
Obilic, will meet in what is sure to be a combustible local
derby next Saturday.
A Red Star fan was killed by a flare fired by rival
supporters when the two teams met earlier in October.
