Wolves chairman Rick Hayward has played down his statement that Gary Megson would not be considered for the manager's job, says BBC West Midlands.
Hayward said on Monday he would be "hung, drawn and quartered" by fans if the former West Brom boss took over.

But the club has said no applicants who meet its criteria have been ruled out.

"We would not rule anyone out if we genuinely thought that that person had the best chance of bringing success to Wolves," said Hayward.

Hayward added that taking the supporters' views into account "doesn't mean their opinions will necessarily be decisive when the board come to make a decision".

Megson applied to become Dave Jones' successor at Wolves following his dismissal by local rivals West Brom.

The 45-year-old last week overcame contractual issues stopping him seeking another position.

Wolves plan managerial interviews
"Part of my agreement [with West Brom] is that I apply for all jobs in the top two divisions," Megson told the BBC.

"Whether that's a certain club I don't know but I'll see what's around.

"I'm keen to get working at a club where I can achieve some of the things that were achieved at West Brom."

Hayward had previously suggested Megson was a viable candidate.

He twice steered West Brom into the Premiership but was sacked after he said he would not stay at The Hawthorns after the end of his contract in June.

Megson's style of football is mind numbing - his appointment would be a huge mistake.

He was put on gardening leave and replaced by former Baggies star Bryan Robson but is now free to seek employment elsewhere.

Championship side Wolves sacked manager Jones earlier this month after a poor start to the season which has dented their hopes of making a quick return to the Premiership.
