Everton boss David Moyes admitted his concern after midfielder Li Tie was called up by China for their World Cup qualifier with Hong Kong.
The 27-year-old broke his leg in training in February, and Moyes said he was not yet ready to play.
"It is such a big game for China that they are desperate to have him," Moyes told Everton's official website.
"We might let him go to help with their morale as he is such an influential player, but he is not ready to play."
Moyes added: "He looks as if he is still a good couple of months away from being fully fit. It is a cause for concern."
