MLS TALENTS HEAD ON LOAN TO ENGLAND
18 Oct 2000, 15:20 (EDT)
'Three-month loan' will become a familiar term to Major League Soccer in the off-season as many players from the league seek much needed experience and training with foreign clubs. Careful, though, some may do so well they don't
Midfielder Ross Paule of the Colorado Rapids will be taken by Fulham on a three-month trial starting immediately. Word is that he would like to move on a permanent deal but UK laws may prevent that.
Returning to the Gregg Berhalter saga briefly, the U.S. international has returned to Everton after injuries ravaged their squad. He is also on trial at this point, even with his experience as an American international and European professional.
Joining Berhalter on trial will be Richard Mulrooney of the San Jose Earthquakes. The midfielder has other friends at Everton including former San Jose defender Richard Gough, who was helpful in landing the American his opportunity with the Toffees.
Nottingham Forest will see Ben Olsen suit up for their reserves today (Wednesday) with an eye toward having him in the starting lineup for their First Division clash against second-place Watford. Depending on his performance, a permanent move may be in the cards for the 23-year-old D.C. United midfielder.
And from the “it-probably-had-to-happen” file, John Harkes is interested in rejoining Sheffield Wednesday to help pull them off the bottom of the First Division. Harkes made the comments during an internet broadcast of the MLS Cup last weekend. Apparently Wednesday boss Paul Jewell has not contacted Harkes, but the former U.S. captain evidently wants to re-unite with his old club. Jewell, however, has a lot of other more pressing transfers awaiting his attention, including the procurement of Efan Ekoku from Hillsborough.
Brian McBride may be back earlier than expected and that is a welcome boost for Preston North End. Boss David Moyes said, "Ideally, he will be back in the next few weeks. We were told he'd be out for three months and we are just counting the days until he returns." In the meantime, Liverpool have loaned Preston striker Erik Meijer for a month.
Everton's Joe-Max Moore returned from international duty and was a last minute addition to the squad that drew 1-1 with Southampton last weekend. Moore came on to start the second half as Michael Ball scored the equalizer on a penalty.
Fulham are in command of the English First Division, one point ahead of Watford. Eddie Lewis got in the last game for the Cottagers, a 90th minute substitute against Blackburn in the club's tenth win in succession to start the season. Marcus Hahnemann, as usual, was Northern Ireland international Maik Taylor's understudy for goalkeeper.
Ian Feuer did not make the bench for Wimbledon's 4-4 affair with Gillingham. Neither has Feuer made the bench in the Dons' reserve team matches.
In France, David Regis has found a starting role for Metz, albeit playing out of position (right back instead of left back). Metz is tied for fifth in the French First Division after a 2-2 draw with Troyes. Regis played the entirety of that game.
Earnie Stewart also went the distance for NAC Breda in Holland as they crashed to their first defeat in four games to Alknaar, 3-1. Stewart did not score but the team is in fourth place in the Dutch First Division.
Rangers tied Galatasaray 0-0 in the return leg of their Champions' League campaign. Claudio Reyna played the entire time after missing the last few matches through injury. He also did not play in the U.S.' 0-0 draw with Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying last week. He made the bench in a 1-0 Rangers loss to second-place Hibernian in the Scottish league at the weekend to keep the Glasgow club in third place, now nine points behind front-running Celtic.
Spartak Moscow emerged as 3-0 winners over Sporting Lisbon, Jovan Kirovski's club in Portugal. Kirovski did not find a spot on the bench. Lisbon was all but eliminated from the next round of the Champions' League. Should they find a way to clinch third in Group A, they will move into the UEFA Cup competition.
Frankie Hejduk was overlooked as Bayer Leverkusen lost 5-3 to Real Madrid in Champions' League Group A action. Leverkusen is in third in Group A and hang on desperately to hopes of qualifying for the second group stage of the Champions' League or at least a berth in the UEFA Cup.
John O'Brien (Ajax- Dutch first division), Tony Sanneh (Hertha Berlin – Bundesliga) and Kasey Keller (Valencia – Spanish first division) did not play this week, primarily due to US national team duty.
