the US soccer team. I mean come on, who can't beat Panama, Jamaica or El Salvador. With an easy group as this, it's no wonder that the US national team is ranked #7 in the world. i can't stand the US or its league. On the positive side, however, I can't wait to see them get knocked out of the first round in Germany in 2006. That will almost bring a tear to my eye :D

I agree that they are in an easy group, but to say the least, they did make it farther than Italy. France. Portugal. Greece. Russia. Argentina. Mexico.
And made it as far as England.
The only ones that got farther were...S. Korea, Germany, Turkey, and Brasil.

Yes I am well aware of that but I doubt they will match their 2002 performance in Germany.

Why?
Why wouldn't they? I have watched some of their matches, they play well together.

Why would you think the U.S. will not match the performance in 02 or even play better?
Soccer in the U.S. is getting more and more popular as the years go by, especially with the youth.
The U.S. will probably do better than you expect, in 06 and even better in 2010.

uhh
you STARTED the US bashing
and if you live in the US, you should respect your fellow countrymen for trying a world sport like soccer. You should respect the few who chose that instead of other overated american traditions like baseball. You should respect their effort to try, not look down on them. After reading that post, I would have never believed that you were from the US. Let this be a lesson to all those who think the US sucks at soccer : Dont bash our soccer - respect our efforts to try what you and the rest of the world does. No matter who you are, its the right thing to do.
As for you RaulMadrid, if you just hate talking about US soccer, just dont visit the American soccer forum. As simple as that.

Lets see if this will clarify my point. When I said I hated the US I meant both its national team and league. For me, watching US play soccer is like watching Europe play American football or China playing basketball. It is something that is pitiful to say the least. When I say baseball I think of Carribean countries and Japan as the best countries in that sport, when I say hockey I immediately think of Canada or maybe Russia. When I think of American football US is king. But honestly when i mention 'football' is the US even considered? Grant it, they did indeed beat Portugal and made it out iof the first round of WC 2002 but the fact that they even qualified is a scary thought. Look at their current group (panama, el salvador and jamaica who is probably the better of the 3) how can the US not make it out of that group #1. What I'd rather see is a group such as this: US, Mexico, Colombia, Costa rica, Brazil, Venezuela and maybe Argentina. This would be a more equal group and we would definetely see the true character of the US soccer program shine through. But of course everything that i've said is biased.
Highway Penguin
10-20-2004, 05:50 AM
True. The US is in one of the easiest groups around.
Brasil and Argentina usually are the only ones who make it out of the S. American area.
There are quite a few good teams in S. America that could make it farther than Sweden, Finland, Ireland, and a lot of the other small countries.
FIFA need to figure out a better system, placing teams to compete with more compatiable teams is much more intelligent.
S4cePL
10-20-2004, 05:59 AM
Indeed Ireland or Spain is no match for say Argentina or Brazil, but all of the WC qualifying groups in Europe are very even (except for maybe Portugal's group). The way I see it. A group containing US, Panama, El Salvador, and Jamaica woudl be the equivalent of say a European group of say England, Luxembourg, Albanai, Macedonia or Cyprus. My point is, how can England be satisfied with qualifying for the WC by blowing out third world opponents. In my opinin, next to Germany, US has a free ticket into the 2006 World Cup. That is disturbing.
Highway Penguin
10-20-2004, 06:03 AM
I agree with your groups, but about Spain. They do have quite an array of quality this year. I wouldn't count them down. ;) :D
Anyway. US does have a free ticket to the WC. The European groups seem to have atleast two quality teams. Which is a nice thing to have. Then you can have two teams thinking cocky, and two rushing to get the 2nd or 1st spot. Plus the matches are much more interesting than watching the US walk all over Panama. No offense intended towards Panama fans.
Do you know what teams are grouped with Brasil and Argentina?
S4cePL
10-20-2004, 06:11 AM
I have no idea but I'm sure it's nothing for the Brazilians or Argentinians to lose sleep over. They have always been powerhouses so no matter what group they are in, it wouls be the shock of the century to see them fail to qualify somehow. To further comment on that Panama game it was really unfair. The US walked all over them. But I did go to the July 11 friendly between Poland and US at Soldier Field in Chicago and although the result was a 1-1 tie, Poland's roster was all 3rd string. I don't think any of the players on the current polish roster started in that game. That was pretty sad on behalf of the US.

In a way, it goes to show that the U.S. team is better than most people think.
The U.S. is relatively young in soccer compared to the other countries in it's group. The way most people speak of the U.S., one would never think the U.S. soccer team could beat anybody.
So if the U.S. wins, it all had to do with the group they were in, not their talent, right?
What's wrong with the way FIFA sets up the groups?
The way I see it is some countries are jeoulous of the usa I mean I honestly think that their a team that can compete. They beaten teams from europe central america but not too much south america, like look it copa america they were invited to the event along with Mexico but they backed down for some reason, Mexico still went to copa america and costa rica took usa's place in copa america. Both Mexico and costa rica didn't do too bad in copa america I mean Mexico beat argentina not by much but they won because of a stingy defense but yet they lost to powerful Brazil despite miscalled penalty from referees but Mexico still admitts that Brazils a power (some south american teams still think Mexicos not A good team but goes to show they can compete just like the usa.

The sth american qualifying is set up different than europe, africa, asia etc. in sth america they don't have groups it's every team plays each other home and away. There's only 10 teams in it, of which the top 4 qualify and the 5th place team gets a playoff match against the 1st placed team of oceania, which is almost certain to be australia. Looking at it i would say it's almost impossible for a team like brazil or argentina not to qualify, coz there's no way they'd finish outside the top 5 teams.
I'm pretty sure usa and Mexico know that they have it easy because of the lack of experience of the other countries in concacaf but theirs nothing that they could do about it! Thats fifa for you, but I'm pretty sure that they and the rest of the world would like to see them face south american teams for qualifiers I would love to see that!

if north america has to qualify with south american teams
it would be damn harder for those teams to make it
i mean mexico and USA are ok but they would not easily get to qualify
in south america
you have the 2 powerhouses and then a good other 3 good teams
the only south american teams you can say are shit
is bolivia and mabye venezuela
you still got uruguay,paraguay,peru,colombia
on the bright side fro north america zone this would improve there teams

Umm if you think about it this way...the ranking is even.
You said in the opening post "who cant beat Panama and Jamaica"
well if the US NT sucks like you say it does, shouldnt they go up against teams that suck? (ex: Panama and Jamaica, according to you) it would make fair competition. Two teams that both suck would have a harder time beating each other, that way it would be less predictable and evenly matched.
You speak of the unfair ranking, well say it was like Brazil vs USA. Who do you think would win? Brazil probably would! The ranking was made so that good teams can play other good teams and sucky teams (USA, Panama, Jamaica) can play other sucky teams.
How is that not even?
I have a solution guys whatabout the teams in the nt in the americas that do good such as all of south america except bolivia and venezuela and equador put in concacaf and Mexico, usa and costa rica put into whats left of conmembel Hows that sound i think that would be great I bet you argentina and and most of south america would be sweating it???? jajajajaajja LOL Because I know Mexico and usa would cause problems in conmembol???!!!! btw and possibly costa rica!!!
if usa are 7 in the world, then i am the queen of israel

Thanks for the link, but it would be nice for you to explain why you think these groups are even.
The other thing we all need to think about is that it would really be a dis-service to all fans if all the great teams were placed in the same group, where they'd knock each other out. So at the end, you'd have the best great team against the best-sorry team. What kind of WC would that be?
IMHO, all teams need to be distributed across all groups evenly, with all formidable teams spreadout.

once again NO ONE CARES ABOUT WOMENS SOCCER so get that through your head! as for the men's team they are a bunch of hotshots who think that by beating up on Panama and other third world countries they will somehow be ready for the world cup in 2006. like i've said before, next to Germany, the US has the second free ticket to the next world cup. i can't wait to see them get hammered by some european team. better yet, i can't wait to see the group that FIFA will put them in. as for your junior high comments, granted soccer is becoming more popular in the US it will be decades before the US will ever be considered a tough opponent.

S4cePL has got a point. The US aren't going to be ready when they arrive in Germany. We are playing Panama. Mean while, Ireland is playing France, Brasil is playing Peru, Argentina is playing Colombia, Netherlands are playing Romania. We need to have a team that will give a fight. We don't have that in the N. American group.
The Women's team is probably the best around. It's true guys, you can't deny it. :D
Looking at the groups in Europe, they may not look to hard, but the teams in there play well. Poland has a good side, they put great fights. :)
Czechs are a great side, Netherlands too, but they aren't at the top of their groups.
Leave the girl alone. ;)
