Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann has axed Sepp Maier after the goalkeeping coach allegedly said Oliver Kahn should be picked ahead of Arsenal's Jens Lehmann.
Klinsmann is keen for Kahn and Lehmann to fight for the spot for two years ahead of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
But Maier, who works with Kahn at Bayern Munich, is reported to have said Lehmann should forget about the World Cup as Kahn is the better keeper.
Klinsmann wants to appoint Andreas Kopke as the new goalkeeping coach.

When the boss tells you to shut your mouth and why he wants you to do it...just do it...

I think klinsmann has to make a choice between kahn and lehmann and stick with it, both have been at each others throats for a few years now, the last thing germany needs going into the world cup is a divided team. the best solution is to pick one and leave the other out of the squad alltogether. The 3rd choice timo hildebrand is also outstanding so there's no shortage of talent to choose from. I can't fault klinsmann so far, he's doing things his own way and sacking maier, who's been the goalkeepers coach since 1988, must have been a tough decision but it was probably in the teams best interest, and andy koepke should be an adequate replacement. personally i find it hard to choose between kahn, lehmann or hildebrand, both kahn and lehmann are getting on in years, kahn might be living on reputation and his past exploits, i think he's past his peak but he's still among the best. Lehmann's been unfortunate to play in the same era as kahn and 2006 is his final chance to step out of oli's shadow. Hildebrand is definatly the future goalkeeper of germany, he'll probably be the german no.1 for a long time, very possibly as early as 2006.
