COLUMBUS, Ohio — Brian McBride, a star for the U.S. national team, was loaned Tuesday from the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer to Preston North End in England's first division.
McBride, a 28-year-old forward, scored for the United States in its crucial 1-0 win over Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier on Sept. 3, his 13th goal in 45 international appearances. He scored six goals in 18 games for the Crew this season.
McBride was scheduled to travel to England on Wednesday, and the Crew said he could play for Preston North End on Saturday, when it is host to Stockport County. The first division is the No. 2 level in English soccer, below only the Premier League.
He is to return to the Crew in March, before the start of the 2002 MLS season, but also is expected back in Columbus on Oct. 11, when the United States plays Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifier.
McBride has been with Columbus since 1996. He spent the 1994-95 season with VfL Wolfburg is Germany's second division.
