Referee Mike Riley took centre stage as Werder Bremen beat Valencia 2-1, showing a red card that changed the ill-tempered game in the German side's favour.
Riley sent off Carlos Marchena for a clumsy challenge, after earlier being conned into booking the player when Miroslav Klose had taken a dreadful dive.
The Spanish side had been leading at that point through Vicente's second minute strike, but just five minutes after the dismissal Klose finally got a leveller for the hosts, and after almost constant pressure Angelos Charisteas grabbed a winner for the Bundesliga side.
It had taken Valencia just two minutes to break down the Werder defence, in a half that saw the crowd grow increasingly irritated by Riley.
The official had barely blown for the start of the game before it was 1-0, Vicente put through superbly by Amadeo Carboni and finishing like true predator past Andreas Reinke from a difficult angle.
Marco Di Vaio should have doubled the advantage when put through soon after, but the Italian's lofted effort was well over the bar.
Riley's first big decision came when Micoud was brought down on the edge of the box by Carboni - but the English official saw no foul.
Nelson Haedo-Valdez was then given a fine opportunity to level - but rushed his shot and pulled it well wide across the box.
Bernardo Corradi should have done better with a close range effort, but could not keep his header down, whilst Riley's bad night continued when he was conned into booking Marchena after an outrageous dive by Miroslav Klose on the edge of the box.
The defender had got nowhere near the player - who had already made his mind up to go down - and Riley will be dismayed when he sees the replays on Thursday.
The second half saw Werder turn up the pressure, as an already bad-tempered match got even more caustic.
Marchena flew into a challenge like a man who had not already been spoken to by Riley, but he reacted with fury as Riley gave him his marching orders.
Werder scented blood and they levelled soon after through Klose - who timed his run to perfection as the influential Miroslav Klasnic's cross-shot came in - smashing home to the palpable relief of the crowd.
It seemed only a matter of time before Werder got a winner - with the German side absolutely dominant.
Tim Borowski thought he had got it, when his shot from range left Santiago Canizares rooted to the spot, but the ball cannoned off a post and ricocheted to safety.
Substitute Angelo Charisteas then should have done better with a point blank header - his effort far too close to Canizares despite being picked out unmarked just yards from goal.
But the Euro 2004 hero could not miss, when put through by the unselfish Klasnic six minutes from time.
Klasnic cantered through but unselfishly cut back past the helpless Canizares to the Greek forward who slammed home into the empty net for the winner
