Barcelona saw off a spirited Shakhtar Donetsk with a 3-0 win at Camp Nou.
The Spaniards showed all their class in the opening stages and Deco's 15th-minute opener was richly deserved.
However, Frank Rijkaard's men overplayed at times and failed to quickly add to their advantage, although visiting keeper Jan Lastuvka must take a lot of the credit with a wonderful display of shot-stopping.
Ronaldinho eventually made it 2-0 from the penalty spot on 64 minutes after a harsh award against Lastuvka, and Samuel Eto'o wrapped up the points with a late tap-in.
Barcelona came out of the traps flying, especially right back Juliano Belletti who resembled more of a flying right winger with his progression down the flank.
The Brazilian had the first chance of the match as he cut inside on his left foot and whipped a curling effort inches wide of the far post.
A slick passing move brought about the breakthrough on 14 minutes, as Ronaldinho's clever ball found Deco on the right of the box and he found the back of the net with a low shot, although the ball did deflect slightly off Razvan Rat on its way in.
Anatoliy Tymoschuk fired a warning shot for Shakhtar Donetsk, as he fizzed a 25-yard free kick inches wide of Victor Valdes' near post.
Deco and Ronaldinho traded delightfully lobbed passes to set up Eto'o, but his finish was fended away by the onrushing Jan Lastuvka.
Valdes did well to also snuff out an attack, as Shakhtar showed pace on the break to set Ciprian Marica through before being denied by the Barca keeper.
Shakhtar looked brighter in the second half and looked to be gaining confidence, especially as Matuzalem was within inches of levelling the scores from Marica's cross.
Ludovic Giuly was then denied by two superb stops from Lastuvka, who showed great agility to recover from the first stop to block the rebound from the Frenchman.
Just as the visitors looked like getting back into the game, Barca grabbed a second from a rather generous penalty awarded to Ronaldinho.
The Brazilian raced clear but saw his attempted chip well saved by Lastuvka, who fended the rebound away in a tussle with Ronaldinho, only for referee Terje Hauge to point to the spot.
Ronaldinho made no mistake in dispatching the penalty past the unlucky Lastuvka to make it 2-0.
Henrik Larsson came off the bench to find Lastuvka still in fine form, as he saved from close range, before the Swede then saw his header from the resulting corner cleared off the line by Rat.
Lastuvka still had time to make more saves from Eto'o and Larsson, while Valdes had to produce a smart stop at the other end as Shakhtar still gamely went in search of a goal.
However, it was not to be and Eto'o put the gloss on the scoreline with a tap in after some good work from substitute Andres Iniesta.
