The Bayern fans were on their feet celebrating a famous victory long before the end of Tuesday's grandiose 4-0 demolition of Ajax, delighted to witness champagne football from their heroes after a lengthy drought. "Now we're on our way at last," coach Felix Magath enthused, "that'll make Europe sit up and take notice."

"That was an outstanding display against high-class opponents. The team showed its true colours," Michael Ballack added, while general manager Uli Hoeneß could hardly keep the smile from his face: "We've sent our fans home satisfied again at last."

Reaction to Bayern v Ajax:

Felix Magath: "We've come on steadily over the last few weeks, although we've not showed our true form in the Bundesliga to date. But we gave evidence of our potential tonight. I always knew we'd explode at some point, and now we're on our way at last. We've shown what we're capable of, this performance will make Europe sit up and take notice."

Roy Makaay: "We've taken on a club from my home country, we've won 4-0 and I've scored three, so you've got to be more than satisfied. We showed today how simple it can be if we stay focused and keep it tight. I really don't care who gets the goals at the end of the day. If Claudio or Vahid had scored three this evening I'd have been just as satisfied. What counts is success as a team, not as an individual. Now we're hoping to pick up where we've left off. The fans enjoyed it, and so did we."

Michael Ballack: "We were aware Ajax are full of running and good football. We knew we'd have to be aggressive. When we were in possession, we were determined and got forward at pace, we kept possession much better tonight and we created plenty of good chances. That was an outstanding display against high-class opponents. The team showed its true colours. But at the end of the day it was three points and no more, so we've got to keep going. Obviously it's a boost for our confidence and maybe we can get on a run. It will be a tough game in Bremen on Saturday. We're hoping it will go just as well."

Uli Hoeneß: "We were outstanding as a team from the kick-off until the final whistle. We scored our goals at the right time and that was that. We went out knowing we needed a win at all costs, but now we're in a superb position for the rest of the group stage. Obviously we knew we'd have to play better than we have done recently, and we went out and did it. We've showed we're capable of wonderful football, and we've sent our fans home satisfied again at last."

Franz Beckenbauer: "We've established a nice cushion for ourselves, although we need to keep on playing like that. As long as we avoid defeat in Turin we're in with a great chance of wrapping up a place in the next round nice and early."
