Aston Villa boss David O'Leary fears central defender Martin Laursen will be sidelined for a lengthy spell.
Danish international Laursen suffered a knee injury against Charlton and the international break has not proved enough time for it to heal.
"Laursen looks to be not right and it could be long term but I don't know how long term," said O'Leary.
"We are going to take him to a specialist on Monday and let him assess it - I'll know more after that."
He added: "But with Liam Ridgewell out for another six weeks or so with his (knee) injury, we are down to the bare bones at the back.
"We really can't afford any more injuries in that department."
