Manchester United have completed the signing of Wayne Rooney from Everton in a deal which could be worth £27m.
United will pay Everton a guaranteed £20m, with that sum rising by as much as £7m, according to the 18-year-old striker's appearances and achievements.

Rooney has signed a six-year contract which will tie him to Old Trafford until 30 June 2010.

"I'm excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United. I feel this can only improve my career," he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson said he was delighted to sign a player who he claimed last week would make United's squad as strong as that which won the European Cup in 1999.

"I am very excited. I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years," he said.

"Everyone is delighted by this signing."

If it does turn out that Rooney is all he's cracked up to be, then United probably have the two most talented teenagers in world football

Everton will receive half of the £20m fee immediately, with the other half due on 1 August 2005.

A further £3m will follow if Rooney is still a United player by 30 June 2007.

Further payments could follow based on whether he renews his contract, and also depending on his appearances at international level.

Rooney's representatives, Pro-Active Sports Management could be paid up to £1.5m - depending on the player's loyalty to United - for their role in the deal.

The England star, who suffered a broken matetarsal bone in Euro 2004, passed a medical earlier on Tuesday.

Newcastle had also wanted Rooney, who handed in a transfer request at Goodison Park on Friday after rejecting a club-record contract offer from Everton.

Bill Kenwright, the Everton chairman, met United chief executive David Gill for talks on Monday as the two clubs met for a Premiership game at Old Trafford, which finished goalless.

The big fee will be a big boost to Everton's finances and will help reduce debts estimated to be in the region of £30m.

But given the last-minute nature of the transfer, it is not clear whether the Toffees will be able to spend any of the cash, or bring in replacements for Rooney to improve their squad, before the transfer window closes.

Ronney is a very talented player but i'm still think that Arsenal will win the title and United will only fight on the 3-4 places .

But how will he fit in around Van Nistelrooy, Saha and Smith? (And maybe Solskjaer when he returns)...

You worry to him ??

He's better than Ruud, Alan and Louis !!!

If he will not get a place in the composition, Ferguson is nuts !!!

But if Rooney automatically plays alongside Ruud all the time, that kind of defeats the point of signing Saha and Smith... See, Ferguson is nuts already :) - either that or he's showing off the money...

I dont think he is nuts, he is stoping other clubs getting him, he is scared he would go to say chelsea so he bought him to stop other clubs getting him

Rooney will fit in with Ruud perfectly and the rest of the Manchester team. Watching him and C. Ronaldo play together this season will be a true joy.

But still I don't like it - as an England fan I want him to be playing every match, like at Everton.

Just out of curiousity, do you guys find it wrong that Rooney left Everton? I mean you all did hear what he said..."Once a blue, always a blue." So it seems that he has a problem with loyalty. Just wondering what you all thought.

True but it was Rooney, why would they get rid of him if he didn't want to go..?
I think he was pushing it.

I think that too, no team would want to get rid of him, but money could had had its role here too. Anyway I never liked him, but I wish him good luck in Man U.

Yeah Fergy does seem a little crazy, now having 4/5 great strikers.
but his pritty much said he only bought ronney now cause it could have been his last chance, if he didn't try get him, then he would have gone to Newcastle and ronney could have spent 4/5 years there and they probly would have sold him for more too when he was around 24.
maybe manutd should sell saha and get another good midfielder or defender in the summer window.

And not just that, he wanted to move to a team that was 'playing in the Champions League every season'.

Rooney comeback delayed

Rooney may not be ready to face Wales
Wayne Rooney will be out of action for at least another three weeks as he recovers from a broken foot.
The 18-year-old is not now expected to make his Manchester United debut until 3 October, six days before England play Wales in a World Cup qualifier.

"Wayne is coming along fine, but after the injury he has had, he is still working with the remedial department," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He is training on his own and he should be ready in maybe three weeks."

Rooney was hoping to make his England comeback against Wales at Old Trafford, and then travel to Azerbaijan for the second of a World Cup double-header.

I can't remember having this many injury problems at the club

However, United may prefer not to rush their £27m striker back into action, and could hold him back for the visit to Birmingham on 16 October, missing the England games altogether.

Rooney limped out of England's Euro 2004 quarter-final defeat at the hands of Portgual in June.
