The England international currently earns a whopping £98,000-per-week at Highbury thanks to his Bosman free transfer move to Tottenham Hotspur.

However, although the Gunners are naturally eager for him to stay, they cannot maintain that salary – yet Campbell accepts this and is willing to take a significant cut.

''There are always opportunities - doors are always opening but it depends whether you want to go through them or not,'' Campbell said. ''Yes, I know I could probably get double what I am on now if I had decided to move on.

''But I have been in the game long enough to know that you can go chasing around trying to get the kind of feeling, spirit and togetherness we have at Arsenal and never succeed. It is everything about the place - the board, the manager, the players and the fans.

''That's why I'm ready to sign away my life to stay here. I have accepted a pay cut to stay at Arsenal. It's my livelihood at stake and you have got to get it right. But we are nearly there, we are close. I know it is going to take time. So I am relaxed about it.''

It's reassuring to know he'll be sticking around, he is I think arguably the world's best defender. If not, at least one of the very best.
