Critics Call For Mexico Coach's Head!

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Former Mexico coach Manuel Lapuente says present coach Ricardo Lavolpe should stand by his word and quit.

In the aftermath of Mexico's 4-0 hiding from Brazil in Sunday's quarterfinals of the Copa America in Peru, Lavolpe reacted to natural disappointment in the loss, and the customary barrage of criticism.
"I'm going to leave the position to see what a new trainer could do," he said.

He later backed away from any hint of resigning but Lapuente, who coached Mexico in the 1998 World Cup and 1999 Copa America, said Lavolpe should go.

"If he doesn't like the squad, let him leave the team," Lapuente told Mexico City sports tabloid Record on Tuesday.

"I'm fed up with Lavolpe getting on the Mexican players and saying that he doesn't have enough material to work with."

Lapuente also accused Lavolpe of adopting an overly defensive strategy against Brazil.

Mexico soccer federation chief Alberto de la Torre expressed support for Lavolpe, a 52-year-old Argentine who has played and coached in Mexico since 1979, and took charge of El Tri in January 2003.

Lavolpe will continue to coach the under-23 team at the Athens Olympics. He has led the senior team into the semifinal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, and to a Gold Cup victory last year at home.

Mexico made its sixth straight guest appearance in the Copa, where it has been runner-up twice, and its hopes were lifted by a 1-0 victory over Argentina on July 10 for the first time in 14 years.

But he has complained that media were promoting Mexico great Hugo Sanchez, who has also criticized Lavolpe.

His relationship with the Mexican press was not helped by comments he made before the Copa: "Some (reporters) have bad intentions and others are really donkeys. ... I'm speaking generally, 70 percent of the journalists are horrible."

The Peruvian coach Paulo Autori (Brazilian) is staying. The Peruvian press has been clammering all week about how he should be fired and replaced by a Peruvian. But the President of the FPF made it known to press that he plans on Keeping the coach and the contract (up until the eliminations) and stressed that he thinks Peru will Qualify with Autori.

ok without talking shit i hate to say this but mexico is not a hot bed for soccer talent, and if you look at all the games they played in the copa they really did'nt play well. they could'nt hold the lead in the second half against uruguay, sure they beat argentina, but were lucky they did'nt lose that game cause the ref missed a couple penalties and argentina controlled the game from beginning to end, they barely beat equador 2-1 while everyone else in the group killed them and equador were always in the game. and against brazil they just got schooled bad. look it's not to say that mexico does'nt have a couple decent players cause they do but as a team don't expect them to win any tournaments any time soon. and thats how i see it.

great point, no one expected greece to win the euro cup so there is truth in what you say. let's just hope for the sake of soccer that teams don't adopt that style of soccer to win tournaments cause it will get very boring. and i don't mean to sound like im trying to bash mexican soccer but there is'nt very much talent coming from mexico, so i really don't know what that will mean for the future of mexican soccer. mexicans are known to be very hard workers so maybe a coach that can get those guys to work hard for 90minutes every game things could turn around for them i guess. but i just don't see it happening. i am glad to see brazil and argentina in the final though cause they do have the most talented players in south america, so this is truly a battle between the best, as it should be. like greece in europe it just would'nt have been right if mexico would have made it to the final.

If teams adopt that style of soccer, a method to play against it will also be developed countering that same style. Teams adapt to the necesities of the game. Now THAT is where Lavolpe fails to be a good coach, he >seems< to lack imagination and the ability to change radically to the demands of different games and teams. I wont disagree in the fact that Brazil and to a certain extend also Argentina are breeders of great soccer players with considerable talent. But individuality is not what soccer is all about, it might be what brings magic into the game, there is also the issue of how a team works together and adapts itself to each game and situation. Brazil was seeming to be lacking as a team what it had in individual talent, but corrected this on the second stage of the cup and the results are evident. After all true, Mexico is not an export house on soccer players, they got two? maybe three? players playing outside the mexican league. It will still be a nice final to watch and both teams (Argentina & Brazil) deserve to be in it.

Otto kept the same tactics throughout the whole tournament and still won... thats just unheard of in futebol.... winning teams always adjust their tactics according... which is why I believe Greece had luck on their side. But for Mexico, luck could only carry them so far.... or maybe thats just because Brasil is more creative than France, Czech and Portugal and was able to render Mexico's "Operation O.T.T.O" useless.

Thats how you beat teams that go into a shell and try to hold out using a simple man-marking wall... you use your "samba magic" and do the unexpected... and europeans can't do that as well as South Americans. Even Zidane, whom many people believe to be a creative genious, didn't work his magic... though I think that he probably would have been able to had he been a little younger.

but their offense sucked so much that they had to stay in defense ..........

He made some adjustments by the end of the game placing more emphasis on fowards but he had no players to connect them to the defense and hand them the ball, they were disconnected from the game. Their offense did not "sucked," in fact, they had no offense at all. They were relying on a free kick goal coming from a foul.

I was just watching the Fox soccer news. They were talking about la copa suramericana and the 2nd final in la bombonera argentina. Some pumas young defender was being interviewed and he was saying he never thought he would be playing against boca and marking palermo. He said he feels confident they are going to win in la bombonera and that he is "currently equal or better than palermo." (at the same time showing this attitude like if it was nothing).

He couldve said he feels confident and that their going to win or whatever, but saying he is individually better than this other guy is just inappropriate.
