View Full Version : Are refs discriminating attackers?

I personally think that refs nowadays do discriminate attackers and it is getting worse by the day. Let me explain: If an attacker is kicked, pushed by the hand, held or being pulled by the jersey in the penalty box the refs mostly wave play on. I'm not saying that attackers never dive or simulate, sometimes they do and it is a good thing many people are against it, including the refs. But I think the discussion about diving has gone way over the edge; it seems like everytime an attacker is really tripped or held in the penalty box people see it as a dive.
But........everytime :mad2: the defender only falls after a personal battle :mad2: with the attacker the ref normally gives a freekick to the defender! I think that's discriminating and it gives the defender too much tools to eliminate the attacker. So the game becomes boaring. And is that what we soccerfans want ?!

Attackers do have to put up with a lot of crap, I agree. Defenders are too rough out there nowadays and they get away with it... Dellas from Greece comes to mind. World-class defender? sure, its very easy to be a world-class defender when you consistently play dirty and push/trip/hold attackers in the box while the german referee waves play on because he doesn't want to upset his german buddy Otto. But hey, its all up to FIFA. It's their Cup and they have every right to choose the referees.
Though it would be hard to imagine how many penalty kicks there would be if every foul in the box is called. There would have to be another way to punish the offenders... seeing as I wouldn't want to see more than half the goals in futebol to come from penalties. :) Or maybe if FIFA didn't fool around and rewarded penalties for all fouls in the box like they are supposed to then the defenders will be more cautious and be forced to win the ball cleanly... this would clean up the game in general and then you will see more attacking football (since nowadays a lot of the defense seems to be made up of pushing, pulling, tripping and grabbing).
EDIT: And attackers do play dirty too and should also be punished if they do so. Ruud Van Nistelrooy in the Portugal vs. Holland game comes to mind. He should have been given a :red-card: for blatantly kicking Ricardo IMO. So I agree that it should go both ways, definately. I believe that if FIFA cracks down on dirty play, then the game will be cleaned up over time. However you usually see the dirty play from UEFA. In Copa America, the south americans seem to have more respect for eachother. They misbehave too but the europeans (sad to say since im of european descent) do play a dirtier game.

I don't think the referees discriminate the strikers, maybe once or twice, but it's not something that happens in every match.

For what I've seen in general: Attackers do push, kick or pull defenders, but the point is that they usually get punished for it and defenders only a few times !!!

I wouldn't agree with that, i wouldn't say that they are so much discriminating against attackers but just that there afraid to make the decision to give a peno and feel that the safer option is just to wave play on.
Saying that i don't think that defenders are fouling all the time, just saying most refs are shit at there job.

Agree with that, it takes 2 to tango and fouls commited would be fairly even both ways.

in my high school leauge unless you blatintaly take a guy out of slide from behind the refs usually dont call a foul. the refs usually dont call it if the attacker takes a dive

I THINK THE REASON WHY REFS DONT CALL AS MANY FOULS ANYMORE IS BECAUSE OF THE "BOY WHO CRIED WOLF" SYNDROME. SOME ATTACKES CRY, COMPLAIN AND DIVE SO MUCH THAT WHEN THEY ARE ACTUALLY FOULED FOR REAL THE REFEREE THINKS THAT THEY ARE FAKING AGAIN. ONCE A PLAYER HAS A REPUTATION OF BEING A CRYBABY, HE'LL GET VERY LITTLE CALLS FROM REFEREES.
I PERSONALLY THINK THAT IF FIFA WANTS TO DO AWAY WITH DIVERS, THEY SHOULD START FINING PLAYERS. THERE SHOULD BE A COMMITTEE THAT REVIEWS THE GAMES AFTER THEY ARE OVER AND IF THEY FIND THAT A PLAYER TOOK A DIVE, THEY SHOULD BE FINED. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU ARE GONNA STOP THEM FROM DOING IT, BY HITTING THEM IN THE POCKETS.

Greek Defender Dellas? played well not dirty at all, did his job
like someone said it takes two to play dirty,
But com' on all those big name stars, u just tap their foot a bit and dive accross the air
what the heck is all the movie acting for..
attackers in the box while the german referee waves play on because he doesn't want to upset his german buddy Otto. But hey, its all up to FIFA
that is just talk for a bitter person saying the ref and the coach had a thing
just plain bitterness on your part.

I think that your idea is very extreme haroldino, the strikers diving is not a big problem, and this tread is a little unnecessary, I think the things are fine the way they are, if a player dives, he gets a yellow card, that is enough punishment, and he'll think about it twice if he wants to dive again.

If he gets first-team football in Roma this season, just watch how many penalties hes going to concede in the box (and he HAS gotten in trouble before in the last season with Roma... theres a reason why Capello didn't play him) ... and don't tell me the german referee isn't somehow acquainted with Otto... that ref was a german from the bundesliga, german Otto had a big rep in the bundesliga winning 3 titles or so... Plus Merk (the german ref) is over-rated much like Collina, who gets by just because he's got a marketable look... Anders Frisk is one of the few good referees in all of the Euro tournament. (Doesn't take bs from players and isn't afraid to give an off-side to Ruud :D) But either way, Dellas won't maintain his spot at Roma and since Trap wants him, Roma are better off selling him to Benfica where he'll earn a spot.

But still I think that Dellas is a great defender, hopes that he can play the next season.
And Collina is the best referee, he's solid in his decisions and stick very well to the manual, actually in Europe there are many excellent referees; Merk, Frinsk, Collina, Gonzales(although he had a terrible EC), if you wanna complain about referees, you should take a look at south american football.

LOL, look at argentinean players, they're specialists on diving too.
