I thought Rui Costa already announced his international football retirement?

Anyways on personal opinion, they should both retire internationally... they are going to be 34 when WC 2006 hits... thats too old for a right-winger and an attacking midfielder at international level and those two aren't the same players they once were in their prime. Besides Rui Costa is a bench player for Portugal, so you can't expect him to want to continue. As for Figo, he probably won't have a starting place at 34.

Besides, those two are nearing the autumn of their careers and should retire within 2 years time anyway. Rui Costa has already been relegated to the bench in AC Milan and I'm pretty sure that Real Madrid will offload Figo (and Zidane) when his contract is up. Rui Costa still sees some playtime with AC Milan but since hes 32 and a bench player, he's very likely to retire for good soon. As with Figo, he should hang up his boots once his contract with Real Madrid is up for sure.. Figo had a great career, it's time to say goodbye to the footballing world since he really has nothing to prove and he's already a shell of his former self. He should retire on a high note and hopefully he does rather than overstaying his welcome and milking some money in Qatar or something. :)

Zidane should retire as well pretty soon... Platini is trying to convince him to stay on with the french national team but this guy does need to step down while he's still good on the pitch... unless Zidane considers playing in central midfield possibly.

Lets hope not! Figo is an egotistical has been. Why bother putting a winger on the field who cant run and loks like he just finished the Boston marathon after 5 minutes of play. He is 20 pounds overweight; but because his attitude is "Im gods gift to earth, I have no flaws" he is unable to be a professional and accept that he has not the calibre to play international soccer. Rui Costa should not play either, he is a good player for 30 minutes maximum. The biggest problem with Figo is that he takes a spot on the fielf that other far superior pleyrs could have been playing. Imagine simao, quaresma, or cristiano on that side instead of the slow whining schlepp. Having Figo in creates an imbalance that is easy to defend. YOu dont have to cover his wing tight bcuz he is so slow that you can get someone over to cover him without marking. The whole dynamic of the team changes when they have two speedsters, one on each side.

da silva... pls watch figo's recent matches and then make your comments.. which really doesnt make sense if u see him play.. u are just so out dated.. age is not the most imp factor.. would u rather put a 24 year old player on the pitch which has only 50% of the skill that figo has or put figo.. pls make sense will u! go watch real madrid play. prove u wrong

Figo's form this season has been great... I think that maybe the time away from the national team is helping him stay physically fit? I still would like to see him retire in 17 months (June 2006) though. If I were Figo, I'd think "well it looks like my dream of winning a world cup is bleak, I've won the Champions League, I've won the Golden Ball... I've made lots of money and I'll be definately be remembered in history, maybe it's time to call it a career and live like a king back in Portugal." This is how it should be... I wouldn't want to see him end his career on the bench or playing for some crappy second division team :D Might as well retire while you're on top.

That's true, it is best to retire while you are still on top so everyone will remember you better.....

I think Figo's decision was very wise, now he has more time to himself and his family, he can rest more often and he's fully focused on his club, and because of that he seems to be playing better now.

The 3 greatest players of all time in Portugal are: Eusebio, Futre and Figo - give him some respect, he deserves that!

Figo is great, but Portugal really doesnt need him. Quaresma, Ronaldo and Simao are good enough. We need Rui Costa back though. After Deco there isnt much.

Did you guys see Rui Costa's amazing goal yesterday against Chelsea?

Rui Costa I think can still be up for one more go at the World Cup at least as a sub.

Figo, he might be past his prime but he still has his skill left if not all of his speed.

I definatly think Figo can play for Portugal 1 last time.

What's up with Portugals offensive talent these days?

C.Ronaldo is amazing but other than him, Deco is a Brazillian who came and got his Portuguese passport to become part of the NT.

Portugal's offensive talent is a little slow appearing unlike it used to be.

costa's goals way awesome, on figo hes the capitan of the selecao and rui wont go out of retirement. Now what go portugal so far in the Euro was their fast attack offense and strong defense.
