I was just wondering. If Great Britain is the name of the country, why don't they have a unified soccer team. Does it have anything to with politics? I always noticed that in every major soccer tournament, Wales, Scotland, and England always had their own team.

It is because, even though we are a part of the United Kingdom, we are still completely different nations. We (Scotland) prefer not to be associated with the English football league.

The answer to this is political and historical - England tried to take over Scotland, Ireland and Wales they couldn't do this but we did decide to all join the Acts of the Union at different times - the exception being Republic of Ireland - part of the act stated all countries kept their own sovreignty however I like a lot of Scots, Welsh and Irish feel we should not have any link to England at all.

Being Sottish I will no doubt be hated for saying this but here goes anyway.
I can understand Scotland and Wales being part of The UK as it is all one, Small island, but why the English insist on staying in Ireland is beyond me.

Long live the four independent nations of the UK!
If we had a Great Britain team it would be 8 English plus maybe Ryan Giggs and Simon Davies and one Scottish player!

I think that if the UK got together and made a team it would be top class.

Just dont let David Beckham take anymore penalties for the love of God

Since we are talking about this somewhat intriguing topic ,I too have a similar question.

You all may know that West Indies is a group of Islands located in the Caribbean Sea.When they play cricket (a sporting game) they call themselves as the West Indian team, however in other sporting events like football, they take on individual identities like Jamaica, ertc. The same withholds during the Olympics etc.Does anybody know why?

I think great britian gives itself an unfair advantage, they compete in the olympics as great britian, giving themselves more chance of sucsess in the medals tally and then they compete as seperate countries in the world cup, euro championship etc.,this gives them more chances of qualifying. It should either be one way or the other, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

well being from trinidad, (the wealthest of the west indian islands) i could probably answer that, but i actually dont have an answer. it is just the way things are. there is no real reason y we play collectively in cricket and not in other sports. Also if we join up in stuff such as in the world cup or Olympics then it wouldnt be a nation thing. as we are different countryies and they is no treaty binding us like on the UK.
Also i thimk we should join up for football cause then we might even make it to the world cup

It comes from times when only 1 british team qualified for major football tourneys.

Anyway GB is so small, we need a little advantage. ;)

Again, Britain refers to the Isle containing England, Scotland and Wales. Add N. Ireland and you've got the United Kingdom.
Note that in rugby union, aside from having seperate teams for each country, there is also a unified team, The Brit. Lions, representing England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Why there isn't such a team in football has bewildered me: they could probably kick some serious @$$.

Nice topic. I have a doubt. Request anyone from the UK to calrify this.

Why is it that despite being different countries and having different national teams u've the same the political system i.e Blair is the prime minister of UK right ???

And does the word Brit refer to only the ppl coming from England ??

Theoretically, we are just one country - Great Britain (or the UK if you include the Channel Islands, Gibraltar and all British ships in foreign waters!). Tony Blair is the PM of the entire country although Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do have there own national assemblies (for local taxes etc) but are governed from London.

As for the word 'Brit', then that does apply to anyone in Britain, not just England.
