After a long flirt with both AEK and Olympiakos with Olympiakos being the favotite to take the players signature, Okkas suddenly last night (23:30 ! ) anounced a 4 year contract with AEK!
This is the signing of the season for the Greek League as Okkas gained his freedom from PAOK with an UEFA decision over owed wages, and he is considered to be the best Striker in the League!
The Cypriot International was approached by many Greek and Foreign (according to his manager) teams. The surprise is big in Greek Soccer as AEK has tremendous financial problems and have not yet acquired the required approval for participation in next years Championship due to owed cash to the state (mainly). - (Anyway, this issue is expected to end with a settlement and AEK will be able to go on... but I think that the settlement happens mostly because we have an election period in Greece next Spring ;) )
Olympiakos was the favourite to sign him and the only weapon AEK had on this fight was the fact that the current AEK manager, Dusan Bajevic, was the manager who Okkas met 3 years ago at PAOK and helped him make such a great start in the Greek League!
Obviously, this, and some financial guarantees by a former AEK president (Melissanidis) last night at his yaght did the trick that left the Greek football scene speachless!
