ATALANTA RELEGATED
Goals from Francesco Cozza and Emiliano Bonazzoli ensured Reggina stayed in Serie A at the expense of Atalanta in the return leg of their relegation play-off clash.

With the scores level at 0-0 after last Thursday`s first leg in Reggio Calabria, it was always going to be a tense affair in Bergamo.

And so it proved although the home side did go ahead through Cesare Natali after 18 minutes.

However, Cozza hit back before half-time and then Bonazzoli netted with just five minutes left to seal the win for Reggina.

Atalanta now join the already relegated Torino, Como and Piacenza in Serie B next season.

The match was initially scheduled for Sunday but adverse weather conditions prompted referee Pierluigi Collina to postpone the fixture.

After the dismal showing by both teams in the first leg, things could only improve. The rain held off and for the most part the pitch was in very good condition.

Reggina knew that an away goal would make things more difficult for Atalanta, and came out looking to play positive attacking football.

Having been on the defensive for much of the first game, especially after being reduced to ten men, the home fans were expecting much more of Atalanta, but they were generally second best.

They did start well by taking the lead in the 18th minute from a corner on the left flank.

Luciano Zauri crossed long to the far post where Natali arrived late. His shot back across the face of the goal found the bottom left corner as Emanuele Belardi tried in vein to react.

Although Atalanta were only creating chances sporadically, what they did create was dangerous.

Gianpaolo Bellini found space on the left to cross for Davor Vugrinec in the 29th minute. The Croatian striker met the cross with a fine volley at the far post, but Belardi got down well to push the ball away for a corner.

That sparked Reggina into life and they equalised in the 33rd minute, although the goal itself did have an air of luck about it.

Cozza ran at the Atalanta defence and played a one-two with Aimo Diana on the edge of the area. Atalanta goalkeeper Massimo Taibi read the situation well and came quickly off his line, but Cozza got to the ball first and was able to poke a shot goalwards.

Former Manchester United stopper Taibi half blocked the ball, but it rebounded up into the air before bouncing into the goal.

Reggina continued to be the dominant side in the second half, creating chances without ever really looking like scoring. Atalanta were clearly nervous about needing to score to stay in the division and they lost possession cheaply throughout the half.

A goal seemed unlikely to come but as the clocked ticked away Atalanta began to push forward in search of another goal and that gave Reggina the chance to break.

And they did so to devastating effect in the 85th minute.

Diana's precision through ball found Bonazzoli on the edge of the area, and with a low first-time drive he beat Taibi from 18 yards.

The game sparked to life again in the closing stages and Atalanta missed a glorious chance to draw level within a minute.

Fausto Rossini put over an inch perfect cross from the right, but Fabio Rustico had just got ahead of the play and faced with the whole goal to aim at two yards out, the ball hit him on the back and deflected away

first and foremost i'd like to welcome you to the WSB. i sincerely look forward to exchanging ideas with you about i amaranti.

now for some bad news right off the bat; gigi de canio has split from reggina calcio. reasons being he is not confident in the ownership. i'm guessing because they're probably not gonna spend some coin to improve their lineup. reports in fact have indicated that they may end up looking much worse than they are now by the time the campaign starts up.

di canio has left the door open however for a return should the 'situation improve'.

I honestly do not know what these small Clubs like REGGINA think they are !!
They should be in the SERIE B thats were they belong. :p
i think some times they think they will get to serie A and trash out the power houses. They might get lucky this year but soon they will be in serie B and even C1 they are use to it now.

thats it! enough bad-mouthing Reggina.

a club is esentially this. a team that has been created to reprisent a city or area. Torino is there for Torino, Milan is there for Milano and Reggina is there for Reggio Calabria.
If a team plays well enough to be in a certain competition, then so be it. But atleast Reggina dosnt have to rely on vast amounts of money to win championships. and furthermore, Juventus being the most rich club cant buy the title this season. we play with pride and that far more then what money can buy you. FORZA REGGINA!

anyway... time to start my weekly wrap.

BONAZZOLI BACK, DI MICHELE DEVISTATING, BELARDI BRAVO.

Reggina came from a good 0-0 draw with Roma to beet fellow strugglers Modena 1-2.

0-1
Reggina had the best of the first have and it showed as Di Michele was released down the right wing to side foot the ball into the 6 yard box to see Bonazzoli side-foot the ball home past Zancopè.

0-2
towards the end of the first half, playmaker Francesco Cozza lobed a ball forward over the defence to set free Di Michele from the offside trap, who chiped the on-comming keeper.

by the 2nd half, Modena were hurt by 2 important injuries, but nothing could excuse the error after error that referee Messina made. maybe some foul play at work? im not going to make any accusations.

a Modena player was waved on-side along the left flank although it was clear to see that he was clearly offside, his cross hit the arm Jiranek who was bordering on the box line. clearly not a penalty, but it was given anyway.
Kamara put the ball to the left of Emanuele Belardi.

yet another penalty was given later on. this time Gianluca Camotto was ruled to have pushed the Modena right winger in the box. but if that was a push, then the actual penalty was a rocket.
ofcourse it wasnt a rocket, as Belardi came out off his line to smother the penalty and have an excelent game.

Modena did have a hand full of chances but Reggina continued to keep the play. Bonazzoli was unlucky as Zancopè saved his bullet header.

Reggina deserved a thourough victory and will be confident next week against Internazionale.
