Bomb Attack On UK Consulate In Turkey
A bomb has exploded outside the British consulate in Turkish city Istanbul, a Foreign Office spokesman said.A device was hurled at the building just hours after England's 2-0 victory over Turkey in a Euro 2004 qualifier in Sunderland, although the motive behind the attack is unkown. The blast caused only superficial damage and no one was injured.
The Foreign Office spokesman said: "The building was empty at the time. Police attended, the area has been cordoned off and they are investigating.

Gareth Southgate has claimed that throat-slitting gestures were made towards England players by a Turkish official in the tunnel following the stormy Euro 2004 qualifier in Sunderland.
The Middlesbrough defender, speaking in his London Evening Standard column, told of some of the intimidatory tactics faced by the England players in the aftermath of their 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light which moved them above Turkey in Group Seven.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's side must travel to Istanbul in their final Euro 2004 qualifying game in October, and Southgate said: "The Turkish players have a reputation throughout the game for being volatile and I know there were rumours of a fracas in the tunnel afterwards."I was down there and it was a bit hectic. There was a bit of pushing and a lot of banter.
"'Wait until you come to Turkey', was the shout, with fingers being passed across throats. And that was just the kit man!
The reported gestures could be interpreted as distasteful after two Leeds fans were stabbed to death prior to their club's UEFA Cup match with Galatasaray in Istanbul three years ago.

1. Yeah that guy who posted the pictures was a sap
2.They attack took place in Turkey, but from what i hear it's not football based and may be connected to the war in Iraq.
3.Calm down star, don't get upset.
4. Why has he(the guy in your pic) got the word "fight" painted on his arm??
5.Was it not 50??there were some Turkish fans arrested after the game, but as far as i know it was Gala and Fene fans fighting among themselves.
It was not our day. I thought our team played well the first and yours the second. Well done. The penalty was justified in the end for our little emre handling the ball earlier. It was an excellent game. We will beat you in Turkey though. Thanks to the English police for their handling the security on the night and i hope ours will do the same. We all look forward to seeing you in our heaven. Those who claims Istanbul is a hell is not one of us.

THE FRIENDSHIP!
in world cup after the bronze madalmatch

I was embarrased to be ablt to hear on television people singing -
stand up if you hate the turks
ther are lots of anglo-turkish people, kids who aren't even sure which side they wanted to win
how do people think they would feel when they hear that
(mates of mine where at the game they said there section was loud but just supporting England - so it wasn't everywhere)
there where also the stupid pitch invasion scenes (all skinheads in burberry and river island - blatant thugs) and the TV pictures from before AND after off morons trying to pull Turkey fans coach doors open to fight.
Sorry to all the good turkish fans - 5000 of them getting up to sunderland is pretty impressive! whose constant singing really made for a crackling atmosphere.
It was a great game and could have gone either way (we did well to ride those first 20 minutes) even though england created the majority of the chances.
vanbasten - the mirror has actually improved a lot in the last year.

All those chants are part of the game. It happens every week in the premiership. Especially the very annonying 'stand up if you hate X Club' chant.
And as for wearing Burberry and Stone Island meaning you are a thug, maybe once upon a time but now everyone is wearing it. So that is a bit of a generalisation.
we all know the hooligans uniform
so do the people wearing it - its naive to think otherwise
even if they don't specifically want trouble they want to look 'hard'
to intimidate
plus stand up if you hate the turks is a foul racist chant TOTALLY different from singing about local rivals

Wanting to look hard doesn't make you a hooligan. I agree that a lot of people probably buy it for that kind of reasoning but it's so mainstream now that it's ridiclous to say that anyone wearing the stuff is a blatant thug. If anything, the proper hooligan would probably want to distance himself from it now because it's being wore some much by ordinary fans.
And where do you draw the line between club chants and country chants? What about Rangers and Celtic?. Is that different because they are so closely linked with two different countries + religions?. And that applies to a lot of other clubs as well. Surely it is all proclaiming hate for one particular group of people?. Therefore they are as bad as each other?. Not that they should be taken seriously anyway. I mean most Geordies *don't* really hate all mackems when they sing that chant and so on with every other club and the same applies to England fans.

no but it makes you a ***king idiot.
And JD is right, those disgusting songs have no place at a football match, anyone who says otherwise is nothing more than a racist thug themselves.

So I am racist against myself and my family then? Stop being so oversensitive and getting offended on other people's behalf. We don't need it.

u have some serious identity issues to address
as for don't get offended on other people behalf- I'm not

I have a Turkish family on one side. I have no identify issues. I'm born and raised in this country but very proud of my roots. Just because I sing a song, doesn't mean I honestly mean the words. It's part of going to football in particular, that you give stick to the opposition. I don't really hate opposition fans to my club (even though I sing about it) and I don't really hate the Turkish (even though I sing about it). Is this so hard to grasp?

......5 months on.....
I note the deafening silence to the racist abuse our black players have received in players like Slovakia and Macedonia, while everyone was quick to jump on a few idiots at the Stadium of Light, back in April. Oh and the silence to the lone England fan (In Macedonia) that got battered for the terrible crime of celebrating his country's goal in the opposition end. But England have the worst fans in England of course. Morons!

I have just read all the comments that were made re racism. Firstly if you don't mean something you say you do not bloody say it secondly there is a very good ENGLISH saying that I respect a lot: Two wrongs don't make a right. Noone here is going to defend the Macedonians, the Slovak or even the Turks. We did the same mistake in Istanbul. When the Macedonina players scored against us and started kissing their flags in front of our supporters, all fans started throwing plastic bottles on them. I don't believe in provocation. If a man scores against Turkey, he or his team mates have a right to celebrate in whatever format. Fans might not like the celebrations but their jobs should then be to lift their own team up with their support so that it would be their turn to score a goal.

There Is No Place 4 Racism In Football...but Against Macedonia, The Racists Were Not Only In The Crowd But Amongst The Officials And Police...that Is Even More Unacceptable, I Also Heard That During Turkey-macedonia, The Match Announcers Were Instructing The Turkish Crowd To Attack Macedonian Players...the Only Solution When The Actual Authorities Are Racist Is To Close The Stadium...no Matter How Unpopular It Is...the English Fa However Have Been Hypocritical...they Don't Want English Fans To Travel For Fear Of Hooliganism But At The Same Time They Tell The Turkish Fa That They Have No Problem With Turkish Security....so Then Let The Fans Travel If That Is The Case.

#yeah, But The Turks Are Not Idiots, They Can See How Hypocritical Eriksson Is Being And Thats Why Gunes Et Al Are Not Keen To Co-operate With The Fa...english Fa Are Like This With All Issues...they Condemn The East European Racists When England Fans Racially Abused John Barnes Less Than 10 Years Ago...how About Helping These Countries Root It Out Rather Than Just Condemning Them

The Turkish FA are not keen to co-operate because they are never keen to co-operate.
Yes England fans did but they dont now anywhere near as much apart from the obligatory few idiots. The behaviour of the Turkish fans and that of any other set of fans who racially abused anyone is nothing short of pathetic and for once perhaps they can do something towards sorting out their own problems.

Sorry but when fans get stabbed to death there and they display signs saying welcome to hell, people tend to think they are a bunch of pyschos and dont go there.. other countries may have hooligans yes, but turkey is the worse and when their own players are supposidly to have said that england players will die there.. dont fill u with much confidence does it!?

didn't mean people stopped travelling to eng?!?
and the players 'supposedly' said that...they were misquoted totally...
just cos eng have already dealt with hooligan problems, doesn't mean turkey is gonna do the same immediately...it will take time just like it did in eng.
