Once again our captain proved how important he is to England. I think he will be missed against Slovakia. He performed far better than any of the Turkish midfielders. His crossing was a under par but he made up for it with is overall play. And he has scored in four consecutive qualifiers. So do the doubters still think Beckham is overrated? And if so, why?

I thought Beckham was poor last night, His crossing was terrible, he gave the ball away too cheaply and he seemed more concerned with proving that England had passion than winning the game in the first half.
Scholes put in another poor performance, surely Joe Cole should be given a chance in that role.
Gerrard was awesome last night, freed from his normal holding role he gave his best performance in an England jersey since that night in Munich.
IMO the big question that comes out of last night isn't who'll replace Beckham, but will Rooney keep his place(he has to IMO)

A poor game? His crossing was poor but his work rate was amazing. He covered a large ammount of ground and won a lot of crucial balls. I think he will definately be missed against Slovakia. On another point, I think Nicku Butt dis really well and it surprises me that he doesn't get selected more.
come on Becks 'passion' play is his way of leading the team - challenging hard and covering every blade to make challenges even when he was on a yellow! led by example - his poor crossing was surely a blip, we need Becks. Even though by his standards he may not have been brilliant he was always involved (unlike invisi-scholes) and as a captain I thought he did well.
If not JCole y not rooney in the hole
then Sven could have his beloved bigman littleman up front (personally would try Beattie or Sutton as the bigman ahead of heskey) Sutton appeals to me as an idea - esp with rooney behind, Owens pace and suttons physicality workrate and ball holding would leave rooney space to operate. Beattie is more of a goalscore but obv very streaky (although u may as well pick him wen on form like now)

I was at the game and i just didn't think beckham played as well as he normally does.
Regarding Rooney, i've been talking to a number of people about him lately as regards what his best position is and many of them don't think he'll be a regular striker for England, many of them see him developing into a Zidane type playmaker. There were 6 of us sitting in the bar at the Stadium of light yesterday afternoon putting teams together(we were bored and not allowed to get too drunk) and we merged our teams after and game up with something like this:
Goalkeeper: James for now with Kirkland replacing him when he returns to fitness. We all agreed on this
Right-back:Mills and Hargreaves got 2 votes each, Neville and CARRAGHER got 1 each.
Left-back:4 votes for Cole, 1 for Bridge and 1 for Koncheskey
Centre-back:5 for Rio, 1 for Woodgate
Centre-back:3 for Sol, 2 for Terry, 1 for Ledley King(biased spurs fan)
Right-mid:5 for Beckham, 1 for Dyer
Central Mid defensive role: 5 for Gerrard, 1 for Butt
Central mid attacking role:3 for Joe Cole, 2 for Scholes, 1 for Rooney
Left-Mid:3 for Rooney, 1 for each of J.Cole, Scholes and Gerrard
Striker:6 votes for Owen
Striker:3 votes for Defoe and 1 each for Beattie, Smith and Rooney
So basically we came up with the team of:
--------------------------James--------------------
Hargreaves--------Rio-------Sol----------A.Cole
Beckham----------Gerrard---J.Cole-------Rooney
------------------Owen----------Defoe------------
Personnally i like that team(even moreso with Kirkland in goal), the thoughts of Rooney roaming around on the left and coming inside excites me.He showed last night he can drop deep pick the ball up and run at people, he also has wonderful vision. And he works hard.
I know most of you will disagree with this team but we were only killing time and it was an interesting discussion.

Good team. Although I would still go for Scholes over J.Cole and I would play 4-4-2. It's not our strength.
what about
James (I see robinson as ahead of kirkland but if 'calamity' keeps playing like that he will be hard to displace)
GNev Sol Rio ACole
Gerrard
Becks Taylor
Rooney
Owen Sutton
hard to put scholes on the bench but he was poor last night (dafoe and JCole both disappointed me in the U21s but I generally rate them)
every1 will knock sutton becos of playin in bellsmickeymouse league in the frozen north - I just see his holdup play as the best available (heskey and beattie not couls enough at retaining possesion)

Personally i'd pick Scholes too but he's been poor for England in the last few games so i think its time for a change, even just for 1 game.and my team is 4-4-2
JD: I wouldn't pick Taylor , he looks good in Division 1 but i'd want to see him do it in the prem on a regular basis, plus he's more a full-back than a midfielder.
Kirkland is a better keeper than Robinson IMO, and seemingly Sven's as well.but you're right about JAMES, he made an incredible save from Nihat last night. And i agree that Sutton's hold up play is excellent but if that the type of player you want Kevin Campbell is a better bet than Sutton
superKev has suffered with injuries in the last few seasons but ur right when fit + on form he can fulfill that role - he def has the strength but I still see Sutton's height as an advantage (better in the air than kev)
as for taylor he's played well enough to get a chance imo (in a friendly first obv) and i think we NEED lefties - the team is a bit lopsided without a player who can cross with his left foot.
when did scholes last score for england? (was it greece - thats AGES ago he was one of the three world class england stalwarts with becks n owen, strugglin to keep his place now)

Beckham was very annoying last night, always whinging.I can't believe the way everyone is raving about Rooney, for a 17 year old earning only his third cap I agree he did well but no way was he man of the match.I think he is greedy and doesnt seem to know when to pass at the right moment. He still has alot to learn but being arrogant England fans always have to get carried away.

What game were you watching? Looks like everyone who watched the game (England fan or not) thought Rooney was brilliant (Uefa.com refered to the game as a Rooney inspired win). So you're alone there mate

Agreed Rooney was great, although Gerrard was announced as MAN OF THE MATCH over the PA which i thought was right.

I got a bit drunk last night and I'm nursing the hangover to end all hangovers. So my typing skills are a bit dodgy. :
:s
I was wondering how long it would take until someone pointed it out!

Well i thought it was a bit of a mixed bag as far as the Turkish teams performances.
Rustu was simply awesome, made numerous world class saves and if it wasn't for him, Yurkey could have been beaten 4-0 or even 5-0.Could do nothing about the goal, great save from Rio, he was unlucky that the ball went straight to an English striker, and no keeper in the world would have stopped Beckhams perfectly placed penalty.Rustu proved his quality last night, my advice to any club looking for a keeper is sign this man, he's the world's second best keeper(after KAHN, well that's my opinion) and what's more he's on a free.I wouldn't be at all suprised to see the man with the war-paint with either o2 or Vodafone on the front of his jersey next season.
I thought the defence in general was poor overall, they played well for the first 15-20 minutes when your midfield was on top but once England put the pressure on i felt that England could rip them apart.
I was disgusted at the behaviour of your central defenders.Alpay did nothing but kick Michael Owen until Owen was forced to go off injured and Bulent was constantly trying to get players booked and start rows. Not good behaviour from such top class players.
As far as the full-backs go, Gerrard was strolling around his man at will, poor old Fatih won't forget this game in a hurry.I felt sorry for Ergun, he's a wonderful midfielder but not a great defender.Still he managed to keep Beckhams crosses from reaching the middle on a number of occasions. He was unlucky with the penalty,Dyer slipped across his path.
In midfield you bossed the game for the first 20 minutes, but after that it was mainly all England.Emre, Okan and Tugay played well but not up to their usual standards.
I was very dissapointed in Nihat and Ilhan, they showed very little throughout although Nihat forced James into a few good(one world class) saves.
My Turkish man of the match last night(after Rustu of course) was Basturk, I thought he was at the heart of every good from the Turks, he seemed to tire mid-way through the second half and was replaced by Hasas Sas(i didn't recognise him with hair), but from what i saw from BASTURK i'd be delighted if Liverpool were able to sign him.
Subs:SAS, didn't do much when he came on, played a few nice passes but did nothing special.Never looked to take Neville on.
Hakan Sukar, he was a great player, he's not anymore, retirement must be close
Umit Davala, did ok when he came on, added a bit of strenght to the Turkish midfield.

Thanks man for the comments....i lost some moments in the match.and i did want to hear comments of a fan who was at stadium.
yeah Rustu did a great job.but i would not think it would be 4 or 5 to nil.
i read on an english newspaperthis''rustu was impresive.it is very easy to understand why Mancherster and Arsenal bid for him''
england was better surely.but i think the goals were poor.
about our central defenders.yes they are very agressive players i admit.but they can be easily provaked as well.
i lost my all respect beckham yesterday.i could read the insults from his lips.
yes our defencce was poor yesterday as u said.
u did a really good comment, man.you may be hired by a Turkish newspaper after the comment from now on :D
