I've been very surprised by the low attendances to Yougoslavia's first division matches (the average attendance is 1788 and the best average affluence is just 3578 for Partizan).

What's the reason of so low attendances in a country, which has so good football players and a so good football past?

SchweizEnergie i think i can answer your question....In yugoslavia only 2 teams really exist and you either support Red Star or Partizan..but these teams are so superior to others in our league that u know that they will win even before the match starts. Another reason is the money issue. People in our country dont have enough money to go to games because they are struggling to even buy food. Also the stadiums in our country (except for partizan, red star, sartid, vojvodina) have stadiums with a capacity of around 5000 so even if its packed it won't seem like alot of ppl came.

There have been recent improvements though since the arrival of Lothar Mathaus and Taribo West...in partizan's three matches in the spring season so far there have been 6000 (capacity of the stadium we played in), 12000 vs. Radnicki Obrenovac which is too much cuz that team really blows and 12000 yesterday vs. Radnicki Nis which was actually only letting in 10000 ppl.

I hope that kinda answers your questions but also let me tell u that whenever there is a euro match our stadiums are PACKED and in the Red Star-Partizan derby (especially in the marakana) there always shows up at least 50000.....in 1989 cup final 100 000 came to the derby....so when a good match arises ppl come.

Yes, I know that for European matches, Stadia are full (last year I watched Partizan - Bayern and Red Star - Chievo on TV). Precisely this difference between national and international matches surprised me.

These statistics come from www.european-football-statistics.co.uk
A very intersting site!

Another very intersting site about European football statistics is the site of Milos Radulovic: solair.eunet.yu/~m.rad

I agree with Milenko...and also many of "stadia" of the 1st league teams are really just "playing grounds" - until last season a "stadium" accross from the elementary school I went to was being used for 1st league matches...I'm not sure if 1000 people could fit there. In the past 10 years every sort of provincial team (loads of minicipal teams from Belgrade, villages from around Serbia etc) has gotten into the 1st division, while teams from bigger cities like Nis and Kragujevac (the 2 Radnickis) pop in and out...so either the teams don't have a large fanbase (i.e. Obilic) or their "stadia" are too small (i.e. Hajduk Lion, Zvezdara) and when a bigger club is in question the fans just aren't interested in going to watch matches like Partizan - Ivanjica especially if their team might flop. Also sometimes fans purposefully abstain if they disagree with their club's leadership's decisions (which happens often).
