i know the alphabet.
elif-be-te-se-cim................lamelif-ye i remmber some charecters...i have been to a Kuran-ý Kerim course before.
we used arabic chracters for 800 years inter fanatic.during the ottoman empire.
but it was very difficult to read and somany people even were not knowing reading in 1900s.and somany sounds were not in arap alphabet.so the education was not good.

in 1928 Atatürk decided to chance the alphabet in order to people know reading and writing, being a modern and very strong country by education.
you know everything starts with education...

and we started to use latin alphabet which was dizayned according to Turkish sounds by Ataturk just in 3 mouths after 800+ years.can u believe :) :smoking:
i will be very glad if u teach.:Dwhen are we going to start my arabic teacher?

ehh...I dont know alot about this topic, and I won't pretend to, but is it not true that in central and south america each country has certain characteristics, with pronouncing, and spelling etc.? A friend can easily tell me which country someone is from just by hearing the spanish that is spoken...for instance, he tells me the spanish in argentina is pronounced with a italian accent almost...am I right or wrong on this?

Piu' migliore is a bad mistake.

Barca e' la persona migliore del mondo.
if you say piu' migliore it means "more best". and that is wrong in ENG too.

And the hardest language, even though its a dead language its Latin.

I studied Latin and the reason why it is hard its cuz not only it has many conjugations for verbs but also the cases change like in German.

That is something that most Slavic languages have also. So why would Latin be harder? I spoke with some French people, and they tried to convince me, that some nation have better predispositions to lean foreign languages...

I say vice-versa: If you speak a hard language, it's piece of cake to switch on, let say English... or Italian,... or Spanish. Then the only real challenge is vocabulary.

Wow, MarieL.
As you come from Finland, you might not agree, but I think, the scandinavian languages ain't easy to learn.
Latin is difficult, cause it's a death language and isn't used, except in law and medicine.
German? I speak it almost as good as my mother's language.
It's not ugly, but has no melody and sounds rude.
Italian and spanish sound lovely to me, and also dutch. I'm watching some matches on dutch channels and don't really understand comments, but it sounds very good to me.;)

I think if it is easy too learn quite simply depends on where you are from, for a Dutch person like me it is much easier too learn languages which lay relatively close too ours, like Scandanavian languages and German, while Latin languages and Eastern European languages are more difficult.

You can also see that in the Dutch league, Scandanavians pick up Dutch quicker than Eastern European players.

I totally agree! Well Swedish is pretty easy actually but Finnish is like the most difficult language I know. I'm glad it comes naturally for me and I'm sorry foor the poor Finns who speak Swedish as their mother language, they have to learn Finnish as well.
And I almost forgot about Dutch! I've wanted to learn that language since I watched the tv series All Stars. It was about this crappy football team and I didn't really get half of the jokes but I loved it anyway! :D

Italian isn't hard to learn. French appears to be very hard. Since Latin is a Romanic language it can be only compared with such languages... But it's not spoken, so nobody every quite learns it. If that means hard language...

difficult grammar, diversity of sinonyms, that IMO means a hard language. In Latin for some of the words even experts don't know what they mean, so learning such a language is a joke. No one will ever know it precisely. Chinese or Russian are not hard languages, nor any widely spoken language, the common and persistent usage of it makes most of the phrases simpler, and grammar easier. And if you keep that in mind you will see, that the hardest language is the old version of the spoken one. Old English, old French, old Russian. With the exception of some "little" languages, that have formed their languages most recently due to historic problems or for making their distinction with their past lingual roots just now (Slovenian, Croatian, Bolgarian). Such languages still have not evolve to be simplified...

If you look at Italian...its a modern Latin.
If you look at German...its modern Old German.
If you look at Slovenian...no past old writings...no simplifications.
Recent works are making our language even more problematic. God knows why??

ok, i speak fluent spanish and english, can recognize accents from different regions of the world in both languages, i speak pretty good french and understand most of it, i understand most italian, unless it's all bunched up and crap, and unless it's any unusual curse word!

i would love to learn dutch, turkish, japanese and portuguese, as well as perfecting my italian.

somebody was asking about the argie accent, all it is is that it's kinda more melodic than the others, similar to italian due to the huge italian influence over there..... and they don't pronunce the "y" followed by a vowel the same as we do, they make it sound like "sh"

"Yo siempre he querido un yo - yo"
=
"sho siempre he querido un sho - sho"

hehehehe, but argies are cool.... most latinamericans from all regions are cool..... cept for mexicans, i dunno, i don't like any i've met

I didn't say german is ugly, it' just doesn't have the softness as spanish or italian. And it isn't melodical at all, but also some other languages aren't. No harm on that, Sebi. It's a bit like my second mother's language to me. ;)

Latin is important to teach in schools because it´s the mother of Spanish, French, Portuguesse, Greek and Italian languages but have been always a hard to learn, maybe because it´s toooo old and you are not used to it.
Someone said about the Argentinian accent, I like it too :D
For me is easy to speak Italian and Portuguesse

¿?? The Spanish language is the same in all Spanish speaker´s contries. The difference is accents and some thing´s words, never in pronouncing or spelling.
Spanish speakers can unserstand each others.
Argentina´s accent for me is not like Italian, but maybe if you pay attention....is just Argentinian
Yes, there´s some words that differs in coloquial slang:
For example in Venezuela young people is called Muchachos or Chamos, in Argentina are called Pibes, in Mexico are callled Chavos, in Spain are called Chavales etc. It´s pretty funny to speak between us, also bad words in some country are not a bad word to another:rolling:

Sag. inter is not totally wrong. What he meant is that you can tell where someone is from by the way they speak. Like you say, accent etc. I know that Castellano is the same all over. But the Spanish in Spain and the Spanish in Argentina is really the same same. At least not in the every day speaking that is.

Right, the Greek alphabet pre-dates the Roman, it's more of the influence of Greek on the Latin than vice versa. Old Greek has many more subtle nuances than Romance languages, the translation of the Bible case in point!

I speak Serbian (you could also say I know Croatian and "Bosniak"), English fluently, French to an extent (haven't taken lessons in a while), I can understand Macedonian and Slovenian almost totally (but I don't speak them) and most of the other slavic languages I find intelligible.

I know a lot of languages, Macedonian, Serbian, Bulgarian, i know to talk a bit of Spanish, but not to write and stuff, funny thing about the Spanish people is that they cant put S in the begining of the word, so they are allways inserting E, like Espana, Estudiantes and stuff. I lernt German at school, but dont know much things, except to say my name in a full sentance and to say where i live.

Nice thread, although i found it a bit late.

For alphabet Russians are taken Greek one and established their own one based on greek. but they don't accept this calling themselves inventing new alphabet.

For Moonstar: I haven't been to Uzbekistan yet, but want to go there too. The language I know cause I spoke with Uzbek guys here and in Russia and the language is slightly different. For the alphabet we also used cyrillic cause Stalin wanted us too and just recently turned back to Latin. I don't actually remember how many letter we have but there're some original ones as well.

I guess I'm in the minority. One of the few straight men who think French is sexy :)

Anyway, I think French is sexy because of the way it sounds. When a woman speaks French, it sounds like she's moaning. How can you not find that sexy? :)

Just imagine it, .. oui, oui, oui.. :D

I speak very little Russian, have family living there, it's a difficult language, but definetely an interesting one to learn.

I remember they did 'teach' us French, but I can't remember much of those classes anymore
I do remember my French teacher had the most horrible smell coming out her mouth, damn you'd go sick in the morning with her leaning above you.

And to think my German teacher was a huge fat pig who hated me with all her heart...

School, what a days

I'm italian(and of course I speak my mother language...) and I speak English and a bit of Spanish... but I'd like to speak Arab, Serbian ( because i admire so much serbian volley players like Miljkovic, Grbic N., Geric..), Polish (because I listen to polish hip hop and I must ask the meaning of every song to some of my polish friends...it's boring..)!
however my dream would be: to know ALL LANGUAGES... wow...
