LISBON, Feb 8 (AFP) - Sporting Lisbon´s Brazilian striker Mario Jardel is set to obtain a Portuguese passport - meaning he could waltz into the Portuguese national side, according to press reports here Saturday.

Jardel, who scored 42 goals last season for Sporting, has been absent for several months due to lengthy divorce proceedings.

However on his return to the pitch last week he scored a hat-trick for Sporting against Pacos Ferreira in an eventual 4-0 win. This season he has scored six goals so far.

In September Jardel temporarily walked out on Sporting, and returned to Brazil, after the team´s management refused his request to let him play for another European team.

He is under contract to play two more seasons with Sporting.

Hasn't Jardel been capped already for Brazil? I thought that once capped you could not play for another National team.

I know that Jardel is looking for an European passport, just like everyone else, due to countries regulations for non-european players.

Last year, when Jardel was trying to join Barcelona, he counted as a non-European player and Barcelona was laready at their quota of non players.

Yeah, he's already been capped. And if Scolari rated him, don't you think he'd have been called him up for Brasil? I don't think Scolari called him up even once

I just went through the FIFA web site and could not tell if once capped by an NT he can then play for another NT. My understanding is that he can not, so Jardel is doing this for club regulations on the numbers of non-EU players.
