I'd go for Rio. If Ridsdale had been a bit more carefull with the purse strings we could have had the best central defensive patnership in the league.

It does help to actually mention the player you are referring to.I'm guessing you mean Gallas.

Actually you probably wouldn't,If he'd been more careful he wouldn't have spent £18million on a player who wasn't worth £10million at the time.So you'd have Woodgate and Matteo, although that partnership had great potential as well.

How about Sunderland? I hear their defenders score more goals than the strikers :D

Actually it's their strikers scoring more goals for the opposition than their own team ;)

Woodgate is better than some of the defenders mentioned on the poll. eg: Wes Brown, Ehiogu.

also is Henchoz really that good? when Hyppia's not playing alongside him he's not looked that impressive in my opinion
maybe Hyppia just makes him look better than he really is.

Henchoz is the better DEFENDER of the two,Hyypia is a better player.Henchoz has had two operations this year and isn't 100% fit.Henchoz has had to spend far too much time covering for Carragher this time which has left holes in the centre.

Good poll JD, mind if i add Woodgate? I dont think he's the best but some might. I voted Hyypia.
Whilst we're on the subject, Henchoz is soo overrated, he is clumsy, slow and not clever enough to be a top class defender, i'm very suprised you cant see that Rule.

I've seen him play most weeks for the past 3 years and this is the first time he's gone through a bad patch,Rio Ferdinand has a bad patch every year..He's had two operations this season (and shouldn't even be playing),that will slow anyone down, slow compared to who??Henry is the only one who's given him the run-around this season and he does that to everyone.Clumsy??he mistimes the odd tackle but who doesn't.and smart??he's not there to be smart,he's the tough one one,Sami is the smart one.Alan Hansen(best centre-back in britain since Bobby Moore) said only a few weeks ago that he rates Henchoz with the best(he said he's a better pure defender thanSami),many other experts have said the same. His main problem seems to be the poor form of Carragher. He spends half his time trying to cover Carra's man because CARRA can't do it himself,he's been left exposed many times this year,it's not his fault.

I'm only going on what i've seen and he has been poor, much worse than Hyypia everytime i've seen him. He may be there to be the tough one, but even then you still neeed to be a bit smart and he doesnt seem to have that. i'll agree he's had to cover for Carragher though which is a shame cos i used to think maybe Carragher for England.
when liverpool try and attack they ship goals
their great defence is a myth - either the whole team defends and they get some 0-0s or nick a goal here and there to get narrow wins
or they try and attack and concede goals and lose
IMO both Henchoz and Hypia are quite good, thats all - most of the defenders in my poll are better than them imo.
Flukey feel free 2add Woodg8 - I've not seen him have a good game all year, he is a class defender but this season he's been invisible

The defenders in the premiership arent that good, no world class players, but i guess if i had a gun to my head, i'd say southgate.

Theres plenty of good defenders in the Premiership. The French have some of the finest in the world, Dessaily for instance. This pompous attitude of my league is better than yours is just childish. If you don`t like the English League don`t go slagging it off in the English league forum.

I was gonna say exactly the same thing, obviously 3 Arsenal fans annoyed there's no Campbell ;)
Keown has been better than Campbell most of the season - for the last half dozen games campbell has hit form.

Cygan was better than Campbell for most of the season as well, so was Darren Moore at West Brom and lots of others, i don't see them in that list.Campbell has hit form at the right time of the season as far as Arsenal are concerned though.
He Flukey, Henchoz put on a good performance in the cup final just for you.He played with a slight tear in his calf muscle as well. He's out for 6 weeks now having operation number 3 of the season
sol's been Xclnt (as opposed 2 Xcrmnt as he was in bursts) ever since OT in the cup
he's even beginning to pass the ball quite well (which he could NEVER do even in his Sperz pomp)
as per usual any criticism of Wenger looks silly now

Can you imagine that defence in the premiership??we should have had it,houllier and Evans turned down the chance to buy Stam for £4million just after Houllier joined the club, instead they bought Heggem, more brilliance from Foolier.
ow Stam n Hyypia is a heavy duty back line! bit of a hooflier howler that one
although a 'boro scout said after watching Andrei Shevchenko - he's no better than the players we've already got

Oh right, well Bassett been a manager for about 100 years so it was possible.Imagine missing out on MARADONA.shit.
We had Michael Laudrup on trial when he was about 20 or so, but Paisley didn't think he'd make it in England.Even the great man made mistakes it would seem.
