I read in a newspaper that Lyon wants to buy Georgi Chilikov from Levski Sofia during the winter brake. They will buy him for4,4 milion dollars and a contract for 3 and a half years.
It will be a shame for Levski to lose such a good strikerbut he will do good for Lyon by scoring many goals as Vladimir Manchev does for Lille.

Well the League may not be as good as the Seria A,Bundesliga and so on but Levski Sofia is a team which is the best in Bulgaria and they always play in the european cups. Also in Bulgaria there are 2 more teams. They are also very good and play in Europe every year, they are-CSKA Sofia and Litex Lovech. So we may not have very good league but in Europe the Bulgarian teams are always very good.Well they may not play in the CL but in UEFA CUP we are very good and every year at the Bulgarian teams make it at least to the 3rd round. And if the teams are good than the players are very good.So if Lyon wants to buy Chilikov than there must be a reason, and the reason is that he is really good striker. He is only 22 years old and in about 5 years he might become a star you never know!So please don't say things when you cant prove it,I mean come on you don't even know this player!

Werder Bremen 0-3 Lyon: FT Report

PA

BREMEN, February 23 (Champions League) - A professional smash-and-grab display put French champions Lyon with one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a convincing win at Werder Bremen's Weserstadion on Wednesday night.

Although Bremen enjoyed the lion's share of possession throughout the 90 minutes, Lyon were by far more effective with their time on the ball as they made their few chances count and gave Bremen an almost impossible task in the second leg in a fortnight.

Sylvain Wiltord grabbed the opening goal against the run of play in the ninth minute but there could be no complaints that Lyon deserved to double the lead when Mahamadou Diarra fired home after 77 minutes.

Three minutes later, the match and perhaps the tie was over when free-kick specialist Juninho struck a stunning third from a set-piece.

Heeding the advice of former Lyon striker Giovane Elber, the home side set about ensuring a first leg advantage with an adventurous, attacking start to the game.

Their intentions were signalled as early as the second minute when Daniel Jensen beat Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet to Ludovic Magnin's cross, but he couldn't direct his header below the crossbar.

Coupet was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers throughout the game and did well to keep Bremen at bay, beating out efforts from compatriot Johan Micoud and German pair Tim Borowski and Miroslav Klose.

But Paul Le Guen's tactical prowess was confirmed when his side took the lead in the ninth minute through Wiltord.

The former Arsenal striker was Lyon's man over at the far post when Sidney Govou scuffed his shot as Lyon mounted a successful counter-attack and he slotted home comfortably.

Bremen had continued success down the right wing, where Paul Stalteri was busy creating chance after chance for his strikers in the centre, but neither Borowski nor Klose were able to beat Coupet and find the target with a flurry of decent chances.

Meanwhile, Lyon continued to sit back and invite the pressure upon them while breaking at speed and with the incision that almost led to a second goal shortly before the interval.

Bremen's goalkeeper Andreas Reinke vacated his goal unnecessarily to charge down a through ball to Lamine Diatta, but he had mistimed his run awfully and the Senegalese full-back lofted the ball into the centre where Reinke was fortunate enough to see only Bremen shirts gathered to clear the danger.

The home side rallied as the first half came to an end and looked again the most likely to score as the teams emerged for the second half, but Coupet was proving a bridge too far for Klose and company, stopping one effort with his legs having already dived to his left in anticipation of a shot.

Lyon continued to look a threat on the break and almost doubled their advantage when Govou popped up to head against the inside of the post with little over 20 minutes remaining.

Reinke was again lucky to see the ball bobble back across the line into his arms.

The French champions' didn't have to wait too long to grab a second goal, however, with Le Guen's counter-attacking tactics eventually paying off for a second time as Juninho fed Jeremy Clement who in turn laid the ball off for Mahamadou Diarra whose low drive sailed into the corner of Reinke's goal.

Much has been said of the qualities of Juninho's free-kick potency for Lyon, but Bremen had obviously failed to take note as they lined up only a four-man wall to defend the Brazilian's 25-yard set piece with 10 minutes remaining.

They, like many before them, were punished.

Juninho aimed the ball centrally enough and Reinke would have felt the ball was heading straight into his grasp until it changed its flight path and found the top corner.

Although Bremen will recall their comeback from a three-goal first-leg deficit in the UEFA Cup in 1991, the chances of the German champions scoring four times in Lyon in 2005 remain slim if Le Guen's side can show the professionalism and patience that made them a cut above the rest in France last season and in a different class to the German champions in their own back yard on Wednesday night.

Lyon must be considered serious contenders in this season's Champions League after walloping German champions Werder Bremen on Tuesday night.

After their 7-2 thrashing to complete a massive 10-2 aggregate win, few observers would argue that Lyon do not have the capabilities to beat any team in Europe.

Coach Paul Le Guen now admits that the three-time French champions have the ambition to "go as far as possible".

"Are we favourites for the Champions League? It's better left unsaid until we achieve it," Le Guen told L'Equipe.

"It would be quite something to be the favourites when the likes of Milan and Chelsea are in the quarter-finals but we have the ambition to go as far as possible."

Leading 3-0 from the first leg in Germany, Lyon swiftly ended any visiting hopes of an unlikely comeback by opening the scoring through Sylvain Wiltord, and two goals for Michael Essien then gave the hosts a 6-0 aggregate advantage by the half-hour mark.

With the outstanding Sidney Govou cutting Werder's dispirited defence in half with four assists, Wiltord added a fourth and then completed his hat-trick after Florent Malouda had notched a fifth.

Jeremy Berthod wrapped up the rout from the penalty spot with 10 minutes remaining.

"Against a good team like Werder we had the game virtually won after just half an hour of the game. That is almost unheard of in the Champions League," Le Guen added.

"We did what what was necessary early on, but we were not content to just sit on the lead and continued to cause problems for our opponents."

Lyon striker Pierre-Alain Frau told the club's official website, olweb.fr: "We could not have dreamt of a better game.

"We had a lot of success against a team that took risks and left plenty of space for us at the back. We knew how to make the most of it.

"We just hope that the matches to come will be as enjoyable as this one."

Goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, who conceded a goal to Johan Micoud and a penalty to Valerien Ismael, added on the website: "Enthusiasm and ambition made for an exceptional game.

"They are a strong team with some great individuals but we knew how to play against them and we should have high objectives."

Lyon 2-1 Istres: FT Report

PA

LYON, March 12 (Ligue 1) - Lyon were indebted to a late strike from Sidney Govou that killed off bottom side Istres hopes of a famous point at the Stade Municipal de Gerland.

The result of the clash seemed to be in little doubt beforehand as table-toppers Lyon welcomed an Istres team that was languishing seven points from Ligue 1 safety.

The home side had put seven past Werder Bremen in midweek to secure a 10-2 aggregate Champions League victory but another rout did not materialise as the plucky visitors put up a brave fight.

However, Govou's goal allowed Lyon to extend their lead at the summit to a commanding 11 points while also maintaining their unbeaten home record this season.

Lyon, closing in on what would be a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title, opened up the game determined to continue where they left off against their shell-shocked German opposition and Sylvain Wiltord, who had bagged a hat-trick on Tuesday, had the first opportunity in the ninth minute firing in a shot that Laurent Weber did well to save.

Five minutes later Juninho had the first of three chances in a matter of minutes. Weber collected a free-kick and a shot respectively from Lyon's top scorer but these warnings were not heeded as he opened the scoring in the 19th minute.

The exciting Brazilian curled an exquisite free-kick high into the top left-hand corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season, leaving the Istres goalkeeper with no chance.

However, the visitors proceeded to settle into the game and shocked the home fans by grabbing an equaliser on the half-hour mark.

Laurent Courtois sent a corner to the near post and Senegalese striker Moussa N'Diaye was on hand to head the ball past Gregory Coupet for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Istres' equaliser was certainly a wake-up call to the home team and four minutes into the second period Nilmar laid on a good ball to Florent Malouda, but again Weber was able to pull off a good save.

The visiting keeper had enjoyed a good game but was able to do nothing about Lyon's winner in the 77th minute.

Govou took a ball from Jeremy Berthod and advanced into the left-side of the penalty area before unleashing a fierce shot that flew into the top corner of the net.

The home side could have extended their lead in injury time but that would have been harsh on a determined Istres team.

Midfield lynchpin Mickael Essien fired in a shot that took a dangerous deflection only for Weber to pull off another excellent save for his team.

Strasbourg 0-1 Lyon: FT Report

PA

STRASBOURG, March 19 (Ligue 1) - Sylvain Wiltord has made a habit of scoring title-winning goals and, while his winner against on Strasbourg has not quite achieved that yet, it all but ends any arguments about who will be crowned Ligue 1 champions this season.

Wiltord's superbly-executed finish in the second half helped Lyon extend their lead to 11 points with only eight matches to play.

Marseille do have a game in hand but even if they do win Sunday's tough fixture with Monaco it will take a collapse of unexpected proportions to deny Paul Le Guen's Champions League quarter-finalists their fourth title in a row.

Strasbourg, meanwhile, are still too close to comfort from the relegation zone and are only three points better off than third-bottom Ajaccio.

Wiltord had the first real chance of the evening at the Stade Meinau but just failed to connect with the goal at his mercy.

Three minutes later he was twice denied by Stephane Cassard after getting onto the end of a move involving Juninho and Florent Malouda.

It was all Lyon and after 31 minutes Sidney Govou spurned a chance after a shot from Jeremie Berthod was deflected into his path.

Next Malouda headed wide after a good run and cross from Mickael Essien.

In the second half, Lyon once again set the tempo and Wiltord's header from a Juninho pass again forced Cassard into action.

Govou then squandered the best chance yet as he missed the target with only Cassard to beat.

Then came the goal as Lyon defender Cris floated a long ball to Wiltord.

Strasbourg's appeals for offside were ignored by referee Herve Piccirillo and Wiltord took the ball down expertly and beat Cassard with his shot.

Wiltord scored twice in Bordeaux's 3-2 win over Paris St Germain that clinched the 1999 Ligue 1 title for ``Les Girondins'' and also netted the goal at Old Trafford when Arsenal won the 2002 Premiership crown by seeing off rivals Manchester United.

In stoppage-time, Lyon could have extended their lead but Cassard managed to tip over a fine effort from substitute Honorato Nilmar.

Lyon 1-0 Lens: FT Report

PA

LYON, April 2 (Ligue 1) - Lyon extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 and moved ever closer to their fourth consecutive title after a hard-fought victory against Lens at the Stade Gerland.

Juninho was again the star of the show for the hosts, effortlessly converting a Pierre-Alain Frau cross in the second half to seal the three points.

The Brazilian has already bagged eight goals this term from free-kicks and was perfectly on hand to slot home the all-important goal.

With nearest rivals Marseille playing on Sunday, the leaders took the opportunity to extend their already sizeable 11 point advantage at top of the table - but not quite as easily as they might have hoped.

Both sides struggled to get into their stride in a largely stop-start first period.

Olivier Thomert had the first chance for the visitors after 28 minutes after breaking free through the centre of the Lyon defence. However, Gregory Coupert was smartly off his line to snuff out the danger.

At the other end, Mickael Essien wasted a couple of half chances but the nearest Le Guen's side came to breaking the deadlock was when Lens defender Vitorino Hilton stabbed straight at Charles Itandje, who pulled off a smart save.

Lyon came out with much more purpose in the second period, displaying the kind of fluent, attacking football that has seen them move so close to securing the title.

Frau created a chance out of nothing with only seconds gone after the interval, but after doing the hard work with a powerful run down the right flank, could only drag a feeble shot harmlessly across goal.

Juninho soon got in on the act, letting fly with a trademark free-kick from all of 40 yards that Itandje somehow managed to push away.

However, the young goalkeeper could do little to prevent the Champions elect finally taking the lead after 63 minutes.

This time Frau produced the goods down the right, making the most of some sloppy defending before crossing for Juninho, who made no mistake from six yards to hand the hosts a deserved lead.

Lens could well have lost belief at going behind, but if anything the goal spurred them on.

A header from Jussiei had to be athletically headed out from his own bar by the impressive Essien after 72 minutes as the heat was turned up considerably on Coupet's goal.

Jerome Leroy also came close to grabbing a dramatic equaliser in the dying moments but it was not to be as Le Guen's side continued their march to the title and extended their lead to 13 points.

Lyon 1-1 PSV: FT report

PA

LYON, April 5 (Champions League) - Phillip Cocu's late strike gave PSV Eindhoven a valuable away goal and a draw they scarcely deserved as the Eredivisie side gained the edge in their Champions League quarter-final tie with Lyon.

The Dutch international fired home after 79 minutes to cancel out Florent Malouda's 12th-minute effort and deny the Ligue 1 leaders, who were the better side throughout.

At the heart of most of Lyon's best moves was Juninho and it was the Brazil midfielder who had the first chance of the night with a trademark long-range free-kick which flew narrowly over Heurelho Gomes' crossbar.

Lyon dominated the early stages and grabbed the goal they deserved after 12 minutes.

Sylvain Wiltord was unable to convert after Sidney Govou found him following a run down the right but the ball fell to Malouda and he fired past Gomes although the keeper will point to a slight deflection of Wilfred Bouma.

Malouda's third goal in this season's Champions League gave Lyon the confidence they needed to get the ball down and play.

And PSV were struggling to cope, especially in midfield where Juninho and Mickael Essien were in total control.

Paul Le Guen's men almost doubled their advantage three minutes later when Juninho jinked down the left before teeing up Mahamadou Diarra, whose powerful drive flew just wide.

PSV goalkeeper Gomes had seemed less than comfortable at the Stade Gerland in the opening 40 minutes and his uncertainty almost gifted Lyon a second goal shortly before the break.

The Brazilian gave possession to the hosts and when Essien took control and struck a low shot at goal, Gomes allowed the effort to squirm under his body and on to a post.

PSV offered little attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes and that trend continued after the break as Guus Hiddink's half-time team-talk appeared to have little effect.

His team were seeing more of the ball but lacked any kind of edge in attack.

Indeed, Lyon should have extended their lead after 63 minutes when Essien bundled the ball through to Govou after a scramble on the edge of the box. Govou found himself with time and space just six yards out but Gomes partially redeemed himself for his earlier mistakes with a wonderful diving save.

Govou was impressive down Lyon's right and the French international was only denied after 76 minutes by a combination of Alex and Gomes after latching on to a Malouda cross.

The game had been one-way traffic towards the PSV goal from the outset but the Dutch side got back into the contest with 11 minutes remaining.

And it came from their most experienced player, 34-year-old Cocu playing a one-two with Ji-Sung Park before firing a left-footed shot between the legs of Cris and past Gregory Coupet in the Lyon goal.

The hosts, who had scored 27 goals in their previous eight Champions League games, poured forward in search of a late winner but they appeared to have run out of steam.

Malouda had their best chance but his low shot was straight at Gomes.

Le Guen: We're still in it

Coach Paul Le Guen said Olympique Lyon are far from being out of the running after being held 1-1 at home by PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

"It's always frustrating to concede a goal like this as we squandered several opportunities to open up a 2-0 lead," Le Guen told the post-match news conference.

"We failed to score a second goal but it doesn't mean that it's over. We are still far, far from being eliminated. We still have a chance to qualify," he said.

"Now we are going to take some time to rest and to prepare for the second leg. We will go there with great will. We will be more than ready and you can look forward for another big fight.

"I'm a bit disappointed but I'm not stunned," Le Guen said. "We dominated for most of the match and we played pretty well even during the second half.

"Eindhoven are quite a strong side. They put a lot of physical pressure on the game. We knew that.

"We have seen two different halves tonight. We managed to play much better after the interval," PSV coach Guus Hiddink said. "We only conceded a goal on a mistake from the defence.

"Lyon's midfield played better than we did in the first half but we reacted well in the second.

"It's a first step toward qualification but we know that Lyon can be a dangerous side even when they play away. At least, tonight's result is a good one."

Nantes 2-2 Lyon: FT Report

PA

NANTES, April 9 (Ligue 1) - Runaway leaders Lyon inched closer to their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title by earning a draw at relegation-threatened Nantes on Saturday.

Les Gones needed a late equaliser by Pierre-Alain Frau, who had originally put them in front in the first half, to salvage a point at La Beaujoire after goals by Mauro Cetto and Mamadou Bagayoko had given the hosts a surprise lead.

Nantes remain too close to the drop zone for comfort with just six league games left.

The point took Lyon 14 points clear of Lille and Marseille - for a few hours at least.

The home side shot out of the blocks in the first half and could have been 2-0 up by the 22nd minute.

Gilles Yapi Yapo grazed the post with a flashing drive in the ninth minute while Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet produced a wondrous save to prevent Milos Dimitrijevic's superb free-kick finding the top corner 13 minutes later.

But the visitors hit back and after Frau had shot over the bar when well placed, the striker made amends in the 36th minute by collecting Anthony Reveillere's long, diagonal pass and expertly volleying home.

Nantes defender Cetto restored parity on the stroke of half-time when he tapped into an empty net after Mickael Landreau could only parry out Frederic Da Rocha's header.

The hosts went in front in the 63rd minute when Guillaume Norbert crossed for Bagayoko to nod home from close range.

Nantes could have doubled their advantage 10 minutes later but Coupet was again alert to somehow pluck away a magnificent volley Da Rocha volley.

They were then forced onto the back foot as Lyon took the whip hand in the final quarter of an hour.

Frau headed straight at Landreau before the Lyon marksman found the target for the second time in the match when he got on the end of a great move, involving substitute Florent Malouda and Reveillere, and hammered past the static Landreau after 83 minutes.

Les Gones pushed forward for the winner but Nantes held out to claim a well-deserved point.

Ligue 1: Lyon target title ambitions

Lyon will be hoping to show that their exit from the Champions League has had no effect on their Ligue 1 title ambitions when they welcome Paris St Germain to the Gerland on Sunday.
Les Gones, who are 14 points ahead of second-placed Lille with only six matches left to play, will claim their fourth consecutive championship if they win this weekend.

But they will have to bounce back from their Champions League elimination, which they suffered at the hands of PSV Eindhoven following a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday.

'This is the biggest disappointment of my coaching career,' said coach Paul Le Guen.

'Considering the exceptional performance we've displayed this season in the Champions League, falling that way in the penalty shoot-out is just terrible.'

The club's president Jean-Michel Aulas added: 'We must bounce back as fast as possible and win this fourth consecutive French title.'

Other matches this weekend will see Lille and Marseille - who are level on 52 points - fight for an automatic Champions League place next season when they take on Lens and Ajaccio respectively on Saturday.

Fourth-placed Monaco, whose clash with Lille was postponed last weekend because of the death of Prince Rainier III, will travel to Sochaux in a bid to remain hot on the heels of the top three.

UEFA Cup contenders Auxerre, who play CSKA Moscow in their UEFA Cup quarter-final second-leg match on Thursday, will welcome Strasbourg in the other match on Sunday.

Meanwhile Bastia, who sacked coach Francois Ciccolini this week after a run of poor results, will look to make another step towards top flight survival when they take on Toulouse under the guidance of caretaker bosses Michel Padovani and Eric Durand.

'The team must rediscover some sort of spirit and confidence,' said Durand.

'The players must show more determination to achieve survival this campaign and roll up their sleeves.'

Elsewhere, St Etienne travel to Rennes, Bordeaux take on Nantes, Nice face Caen and Metz entertain Istres.

Auxerre 0-3 Lyon: FT Report

PA

AUXERRE, April 24 (Ligue 1) - Lyon moved closer still to a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title with a commanding victory over Auxerre on Sunday evening.

The defending champions played typically exuberant football as they outclassed Auxerre with first-half goals from Juninho and Mickael Essien and a second-half header from Cris.

Lyon started briskly and Juninho curled a free-kick over the bar after six minutes.

Brazilian midfielder Juninho then almost created a goal for Lyon from his corner but Essien's header rattled the Auxerre crossbar.

Auxerre then created a good chance of their own when Teemu Tainio hit the crossbar after a move involving Benjamin Mwaruwari and Yann Lachuer.

Sidney Govou fired over for Lyon after 25 minutes but two minutes later the champions took the lead with a well-worked goal.

Sylvain Wiltord fed an overlapping Anthony Reveillere who cut the ball back.

Florent Malouda failed to connect but behind him Juninho sidefooted the ball past Fabien Cool.

Minutes later Cool did well to save from Govou and the goalkeeper repeated the feat to keep out an Essien header.

In first-half stoppage time it was 2-0. This time the Juninho-Essien combination worked as the Ghanaian headed the Brazilian's corner home for the second goal.

After the break Lyon continued to dominate and Essien fired narrowly wide after being set up by Reveillere.

The third goal came after 55 minutes as Malouda swung in a free-kick and Cris got ahead of his marker to glance a header past Cool.

Auxerre did not give up and another shot from Tottenham-bound Tainio was just wide but at the other end Cool was forced to make two excellent saves from Mahamadou Diarra's shot and Juninho's free-kick.

There was no more significant action and in all likelihood Lyon's party celebrations can start next weekend with an 11-point lead over Lille and only four matches still to play.

Lyon 2-1 AC Ajaccio: FT Report

PA

LYON, May 8 (Ligue 1) - Lyon were crowned French champions for the fourth consecutive season on Sunday when they beat struggling Ajaccio in a tough match at the Stade Gerland.

Lyon tore into Ajaccio from the outset and Juninho's early penalty was saved by Ajaccio goalkeeper Stephane Porato.

Sidney Govou's header duly put Lyon ahead and then the sending-off of Ajaccio defender Mamadou Seck further tilted the balance in the favour of Lyon.

However, early in the second half Yohan Demont scored for the Corsicans to give Lyon a fright only for Claudio Cacapa to head what would prove to be the title-winning goal.

It was another night of celebration for Lyon and their coach Paul Le Guen who has been in charge for the last three titles - the first was won by his predecessor Jacques Santini.

However, Ajaccio, who are battling against relegation, did not make things easy for the hosts.

After seven minutes, Ajaccio came close to opening the scoring when their Brazilian forward Andre Luiz fired a shot that struck the post.

The newly-crowned champions then threatened in the 27th minute when Mickael Essien played a delightful ball towards Sylvain Wiltord whose shot was blocked by a timely challenge from Xavier Collin.

The impressive Wiltord then tried his luck with a shot from 25 yards after outpacing the Ajaccio defence but Porato managed to parry it.

After 31 minutes Lyon were awarded a penalty as Juninho tumbled under a challenge from Collin and although the Ajaccio players protested, it looked to be a good decision.

Juninho, perhaps put off by sledging from Cyril Chapuis, stepped up to take the kick but Porato made a superb save down to his left.

From the resultant corner, Wiltord fired a shot into the side netting.

The goal finally came, however, and it was a well-worked move by Lyon.

Juninho played the ball out to Eric Abidal on the left and his cross was headed in by a stooping Govou.

Ajaccio then were reduced to 10 men when Seck deliberately handled a Wiltord pass which was bound for Govou, who would have had a free run on goal.

A free-kick was awarded on the edge of the box and Juninho's curled shot was well saved by Porato.

Early in the second half, Wiltord volleyed a shot just wide of Porato's post.

However, Demont briefly spoiled the party as he equalised for the Corsicans.

Chapuis set him up with a header, leaving Demont to fire past Gregory Coupet.

It did not take long for Lyon to go back in front.

Juninho took a short corner to Florent Malouda whose cross deflected off Collin into the path of Cacapa and the Lyon captain beat Porato with a header.

Wiltord then had a goal disallowed when he knocked home the rebound after a flick from Cris had struck the post.

Lyon were not to be denied and the fact that they won the title with three matches to spare shows just how far their rivals have fallen behind them.

Marseille 0-1 Lyon: FT Report

PA

MARSEILLE, May 21 (Ligue 1) - Marseille slipped to fifth in the Ligue 1 standings after champions Lyon ruthlessly claimed the spoils at the Stade Velodrome on Saturday.

Lyon have shown no sign of easing off since they claimed the title two weeks ago, and Juninho's magnificent winning goal nine minutes into the second half extended their lead at the top of the table to a massive 14 points.

The hosts started brightly and Habib Bamogo came close with a vicious strike early on.

Lyon responded with a flowing move that culminated in Florent Malouda just missing a cross from Juninho.

Moments later Lyon spurned another good opening when Sylvain Wiltord skilfully beat two defenders before his shot shaved the top of the crossbar.

There were plenty of opportunities at both ends, and Marseille came close when Sergio Koke powerful drive from long range was well held by visiting goalkeeper Gregory Coupet.

Coupet's opposite number Fabien Barthez then produced an outstanding save to deny Wiltord, as Lyon finished the half in the ascendancy.

Marseille created, and wasted, the first chance of the second period, when Koke missed his kick after receiving a long, lofted through ball.

Lyon fired a warning shot when Wiltord again forced Barthez to make a smart save, but the hosts failed to take note, and seconds later the away side snatched the lead.

Juninho took the ball past three defenders before beating Barthez with an unstoppable shot.

Nilmar wasted a late opportunity to kill the game when he took on Barthez, failed to beat him, and crossed the ball to Wiltord who failed to control, but the missed chance mattered little as Lyon comfortably held on for the win.

Lyon 0-0 Nice: FT Report

PA

LYON, May 28 (Ligue 1) - Paul Le Guen did not sign off in style as the coach of Lyon, but with Les Gones having already clinched their fourth successive crown there was no need for three points, anyway.

With Nice also out of European contention and safe from relegation, these 90 minutes would have been an ideal time for Le Guen and the Lyon fans to reflect on a terrific season, and also ponder the future.

The only certainty now that the Ligue 1 campaign is over is that Le Guen is leaving, and so are some of the Lyon players with big-spending European outfits preparing to raid the club.

Lyon did have their chances.

Juninho struck a 25th-minute free-kick that was on target but Nice's Damien Gregorini reacted well to come up with the save.

The home side also threatened before half-time when Florent Malouda crossed from the right to Mickael Essien, one of the Lyon players that many clubs are hopeful of signing.

Essien headed the ball forward but missed to the right.

Marama Vahirua nearly put Nice in front with a free-kick five minutes after the restart which found Victor Agali and he clipped the ball forward but into the arms of the goalkeeper Gregory Coupet.

Essien threatened again after Sylvain Wiltord's cross flew into the box in the 67th minute but his header went wide.

Nice's Serge Die took aim from about 20 yards but Coupet again saved well.

After Mahamadou Diarra missed a 71st minute opportunity from close range, Anthony Reveillere had a chance but his shot lacked power as the game finished scoreless.

For a country with 6000+ teams, France is woefully inadequate at providing updated scores. For example, there are still two DOM-TOM CDF Champions to be decided:

but they were played two days ago!!!!

Wow, Lyon 1-3 Lille.

Geez, first lose of the season at home this friday.

Lyon crashed to their first defeat of the season at home to Lille on Friday night.

Peter Odemwingie gave the visitors a shock lead in the eighth minute before Mathieu Debuchy added a second on the hour mark.

Sidney Govou gave the league leaders some hope with his 69th minute effort, but Stephane Dumont (70) ensured a shock 3-1 win for Claude Puel's (pictured) side.

The victory elevates Lille a massive eight places to fourth in Ligue 1, while Lyon still enjoy a healthy 12 point advantage at the top of the table.

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has slammed referee Mr Duhamel after his side slipped to their first defeat of the season against Lille.

Aulas was furious with several decisions that he felt did not go Lyon's way.

"The referee has not been unquestionable," Aulas said.

"He already left me a bitter taste at Marseille (1-1), where we lost two points. Tonight he was not at his best, even if he didn't make us lose.

"However, he didn't help us by refusing a goal and forgetting a penalty and a sending off."

The Lyon chairman was, however, full of praise for Lille and their coach.

"Lille played a good match. Congratulations to Claude Puel, who is an excellent coach and achieves a remarkable work with less resources than Lyon," Aulas added.

Puel was naturally delighted with his side's win over the French champions.

"We played a good match," Puel said.

"We got three points and that is the most important thing to remain with the top teams. I know we were capable of making the difference and disturbing any team.

"We started the match very well. In the second half we showed we are strong. We showed daring and no complex," he added.

Shocking.

Carew Content At Lyon
The agent of Lyon striker John Carew has confirmed that his client intends to stay in France long term.

Carew has impressed for the French champions this year, both domestically and in European competition, and is now looking for a permanent base in Lyon.

The Norway international is enjoying life with Gerard Houllier's table-toppers and despite interest from other clubs, will remain in France.

''Yes, some clubs have been in touch with me,'' Carew's agent, Per Flod, told Dagbladet.

''Their interest is big. It has always been there and it has certainly not reduced after what John has produced this autumn.

''But a transfer is not on the cards now. Everyone knows it will be difficult to tempt John to leave Lyon.''

Carew has echoed the words of his agent, claiming he has no interest in seeking pastures new.

''A transfer is nothing I consider,'' said Carew. ''It is simply not interesting.''

Coupet Loves Tiago and Cris
Lyon keeper Gregory Coupet feels the club have found the perfect replacement for Michael Essien in the guise of Tiago.

Essien swapped Lyon for Chelsea in a mega deal in August, while Tiago made the move in the opposite direction later in the summer.

Many felt Lyon could struggle to replace Ghanaian star Essien, but Coupet claims Tiago has slotted in seamlessly at Stade Gerland.

"Tiago has an incredible intelligence for the game," said Coupet. "He has a sense for positioning and makes simple and efficient gestures.

"Tiago is at least as strong as Essien, and that means a lot."

Coupet also hailed the impact of defender Cris.

"Cris really is an unusual man," said Coupet. "When in the 89th minute you see his determination to come back in defence after a free kick, you tell yourself you have in front of you a man that only thinks to defend the route to his goal."

Zairi Targetted
Lyon coach Gerard Houllier has played down talk he wants to sign Sochaux winger Jaouad Zairi.

The Morocco international has been linked with a January move to the French champions, despite his likely departure to the African Cup of Nations.

Zairi has impressed with Sochaux this season and his displays are rumoured to have caught the eye of Houllier.

But the Lyon coach is not looking to reinforce his squad during the winter window as he feels he has sufficient strength in depth already.

"The winter transfer window sometimes allows you to get good opportunities, but that is not so often," said Houllier.

"There is already a lot of competition in the group, there is no need to have more."

Zairi is under contract at Sochaux until 2008 and has established himself as one of the most effective attackers in Ligue 1.

PSG Persue Pedretti
Paris Saint Germain have once again been linked with Lyon midfielder Benoit Pedretti, as new coach Guy Lacombe looks to add new faces during the January transfer window.

The Ligue 1 outfit are currently searching for two new players as they look for reinforcements to aid their challenge in the New Year.

A striker remains a priority with Bonaventure Kalou set to travel to the African Cup of Nations, but speculation is rife that the capital club will pursue a move for Pedretti.

The accomplished midfielder has seen his stock fall after a summer move to OL, and Lacombe is keen to recruit the player he made captain during his time in charge of Sochaux.

With Modeste M'Bami and Edouard Cisse both underperforming there is a need to improve the midfield options at Parc des Princes, and reports in Le Parisien are indicating that PSG have made an approach for the Lyon man.

Pedretti is desperate for first team football as he looks to keep his World Cup dream alive, and his chances at Stade Gerland appear limited with Tiago, Juninho Pernambucano and Mahamadou Diarra all favoured by boss Gerard Houllier.

Saarbruken Sign Lyon Man
Struggling Bundesliga Zwei outfit FC Saarbrucken have turned to Frenchman Alexis Genet in a bid to aid their fight against relegation.

Coach Rudi Bommer had made a new defender a top priority on his winter shopping list as the FCS are third from bottom in Germany's second division.

The 23-year-old Genet was surplus to requirements at French champions Lyon and has now put pen-to-paper under a contract which binds him to the Ludwigsparkstadion until 2007.

The central defender is set to join his new team-mates during the club's winter training camp in Spain next month.

Upcoming match....
Strasbourg vs Lyon
The low down on Racing Club de Strasbourg

There are several ways to use the winter break to prepare for the second half of the season. But while Les Lyonnais decided to stay at home and brave the cold and the snow, the Alsace outfit, Racing Club de Strasbourg, preferred Tunisia.

It was in Sousse that Jacky Duguépéroux chose to set-up camp over the winter break in order to best prepare their various campaigns. The toughest battle facing the side will the fight for their Ligue 1 survival; the UEFA Cup has provided something of a bonus, as could te Coupe de France. So where exactly are Strasbourg after five months of competition?

Qualified for the UEFA Cup following their Coupe de la Ligue win over Caen last season, Strasbourg have overcome their various tests in flying colours:6 matches without defeat with four wins and two draws (14 goals scored, 3 against). Qualified for the round-of-32 against Bulgarian side Litex Lovetch, Strasbourg could conceivably play Monaco or Basel in the last 16. It’s a surprising record when one considers the clubs L1 record after 19 matches! In the Coupe de la Ligue they didn’t hang around long: eliminated in the first round by Caen, 1-0.

However the side’s biggest worry remains the league. In the first half of the season the Alsacians have 11 points (1 victory, 8 draws and 10 losses; 10 buts scored and 22 conceded). Those statistics have the teammates of Guillaume Lacour sitting last, two points from Ajaccio, three behind Metz and already ten from Sochaux, the first team out of the relegation zone. There’s no need to draw a picture: all is not well in the club that is nearly 100 years old. Stricken with bad luck, the side’s loyal supporters are still awaiting the first win of the season at Le Meinau. The home record doesn’t make for pretty reading with five draws (Auxerre 0-0, Bordeaux 0-0, Lens 1-1, Nice 0-0, Sochaux 0-0) and five defeats (Monaco 2-1, Toulouse 4-2, Rennes 1-0, ASSE 1-0, OM 1-0); four goals scored, ten conceded. In seven of those ten home games Pagis and co. were unable to register a single goal. They haven’t scored in their last five home games. The side has also drawn its last six games, home and away.

10 goals scored in all (Pagis 4, Haggui 2, Diané 2, Le Pen 1 and A. Farnerud 1); One from a free-kick (Monaco); 9 in the penalty box; 2 penalties (Pagis against Nancy and Nantes); 4 headers; 3 goals from crosses; 2 two from free-kicks; 1 from a corner. 22 goals conceded of which 4 were from outside the penalty area; 3 headers; 6 from crosses; 2 from corners; 1 from a free-kick.

Jacky Duguépéroux has used 26 players. Only Guillaume Lacour has played in all 19 league games and he has started each one. He has only missed 19 minutes out of a possible 1,710. Nicolas Puydebois took over from Stéphane Cassard in goal following the defeat to Lille. The former Sochaux, Le Havre, Montpellier and Troyes ‘keeper was finally sanctioned for three blunders which resulted in goals (Rennes, Le Mans and Lille). “Nico” is now first choice in goal. The Strasbourg coach will also have to deal with a number of absences through injurry, such as Keita, Haggui, Le Pen… Bassila quit the club at the start of the season after being abused by the Meinau public. As for Mouloungui he has been loaned out to Gueugnon.

In the disciplinary department they have received 31 yellow cards and five reds. Boka is leading the way with five yellows and a red.

Survival already looks doubtful although mathematically, anything is still possible. But the figures speak fr themselves. In the last three campaigns clubs have needed 43 and 39 points (twice) to survive the drop. Istres, last year’s bottom club had 12 points at the halfway mark (one more than Strasbourg!) and were relegated witha total of 32 points. There’s plenty of work to do and it starts... against OL!

Should be interesting...it's tomorrow.

Lyon 4-0 Strasbourg
Easy Stuff...
Lyon have cemented their position at the summit of Ligue 1 following a comprehensive 4-0 win over lowly Strasbourg.

Les Gones were always favourites to triumph at Stade de la Meinau and it did not take long for the visitors to forge ahead.

Former Arsenal striker Sylvain Wiltord broke the deadlock after just six minutes and the visitors only went from strength to strength as the game progressed.

Jeremy Berthod doubled Lyon's advantage just before the break and things failed to improve after the interval for the home side with Wiltord wrapping up the points.

The Ex-Gunner continued to run riot adding his second of the game prior to the hour mark before going on to complete his hat-trick after 73 minutes.

Vitorino Hilton rescued a point for 10-men Lens at Marseille in a 1-1 draw.

Habib Beye opened the scoring for the home side and things got worse for the visitors when Charles-Hubert Itandje was sent off.

However, the Lens side refused to throw in the towel and Hilton bagged a priceless point after 76 minutes.

Bordeaux missed the chance to maintain parity with Lyon after being held to a goalless draw by Nancy.

Paris Saint Germain have climbed the table following a 3-1 success over Sochaux.

Christophe Landrin opened the scoring although Badara Sene levelled matters just before the hour mark.

However, Sochaux were not level for long with Fabrice Pancrate restoring PSG's advantage before Pauleta settled the contest.

Ajaccio remain just above bottom-placed Strasbourg after going down 2-0 at Lille.

Peter Odemwingie got the ball rolling after 37 minutes although the home side had to wait until late on for Daniel Gygax to clinch the points.

Metz stay in the drop zone after Vinicius De Melo's second half brace gave Le Mans a 2-0 triumph and the three points.

Goals either side of half-time from Etienne Didot and John Utaka gave Rennes a 2-0 win at Nantes.

Claudiu Keserue should have pulled one back for Metz after Didot's goal, but he missed from the penalty spot.

St Etienne and Troyes shared the points as both sides finished with 10 men.

Sebastien Grax fired Troyes ahead before he along with Zoumana Camara found themselves seeing red.

Vincent Hognon netted after 51 minutes to give St Etienne a 1-1 draw at Stade Geoffrey-Guichard.

Nice bagged their sixth win of the league campaign after seeing off Toulouse 2-1.

First half goals from Bakari Kone and Marama Vahirua had the home side in control of the tie.

Issoumaila Dao pulled one back late on for the visitors, but it proved nothing more than a consolation.

No Sales This Summer--
Lyon coach Gerard Houllier insists none of his squad will be sold during the January transfer window.

New Paris Saint Germain Guy Lacombe had been linked with a move for Benoit Pedretti - whom he nurtured at Sochaux.

However, Houllier insists that none of his talented squad will be allowed to leave.

"I can inform you that we won't sell players, nobody is going to leave in January," Houllier told Canal+ - who ironically are the major shareholders in PSG.

An added-time strike from French Under-21 winger Julien Faubert earned FC Girondins de Bordeaux a dramatic Ligue 1 victory at home against RC Strasbourg while Olympique de Marseille unexpectedly lost at AC Ajaccio.

Le Pen on target
With leaders Olympique Lyonnais taking on AJ Auxerre on Sunday, Bordeaux knew that victory at the Stade Chaban-Delmas would cut the gap at the top to eleven points. The home side made a poor start, however, falling behind after only ten minutes as Strasbourg striker Kevin Gameiro was brought down in the penalty area and Ulrich Le Pen beat Ulrich Ramé from the penalty spot.

Faubert delight
Bordeaux gradually worked their way back into the match and drew level eight minutes before half-time through former AC Siena midfielder Fernando Menegazzo. Strasbourg then lost their new signing, Egyptian midfielder Abou Moslim, to a red card for a tackle from behind, but held firm until two minutes into added time. With seconds remaining, however, Franck Jurietti's free-kick was met by Faubert, who volleyed Bordeaux's winner.

Rivals falter
That win took on added significance as the three sides in fourth, fifth and sixth position - LOSC Lille Métropole, Paris Saint-Germain FC and Marseille - all failed to pick up three points. Marseille lost 3-1 at Ajaccio, whose win was their first in 16 league matches, with Waldeir Lucas scoring twice. PSG also lost away from home, going down to Sammy Traoré's header two minutes from time, while Lille were held to a goalless draw at Toulouse FC.

Metz misery
Le Mans UC 72 moved up to seventh position with a 3-1 success at ES Troyes Aube Champagne, Japanese midfielder Daisuke Matsui scoring twice in five first-half minutes. AS Nancy-Lorraine won 2-0 at Stade Rennais FC while FC Sochaux-Montbéliard overwhelmed AS Saint-Etienne, running out 4-0 victors. FC Metz slipped to the bottom of the table with their sixth home defeat of the season, going down 4-1 against FC Nantes Atlantique.

Lyon have been linked pretty heavily with Anderlecht's Vincent Kompany in recent weeks. The 20-year defender is simply considered one of the best young defenders in the world. He's been coveted by many of the biggest clubs in the world, and its somewhat surprising that he hasn't actually moved yet. He seems in no rush to move, which means that Anderlecht have no pressure to sell. And he has said he won't move to sit on the bench, at any club.

Lyon look a very possible destination - they are big enough, they have the money, and he would play. But apparently their valuation doesn't match that of Anderlecht. Despite the rumors, Anderlecht's general manager has recently said that Lyon's valuation of 8m Euros is half of what they want. And they don't look likely to lower their asking price, despite the fact that Kompany has missed a good portion of the season with a shoulder injury.

He should be able to start at least half of Lyon's games considering what he does to the Lyon players in this video lol: http://youtube.com/watch?v=w3zYeJVc8fY Pjanic played Juninho, Benzema, and them lol

But also, I love this compilation: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Nhwg-4VG7Ew

Sucks that most of the compilation is when he played agianst Lyon. Some games like against Marseille, Toulouse, and Strasbourg, he was just as impressive, and especially the one against Marseille he was even more impressive. Don't know why they're not shown, he did all kinds of dribbles, crosses, shots, etc.

DelijaZauvjek

He's got some speed under those legs haha =D

I'm thinking he wont play much this year and especially not in the Champions League, but he will get some playing time and it will continue to increase.

He's also got good foot-eye coordination.

nb-legenda
05-26-2008, 02:37 AM
^ Nice point about coordination. The coach has said this: "I didn't see Pjanic have one glimpse of the player all the way to the right running by the wings and he just crossed it there like he somehow knew he was there. It's like he has a top view of the pitch". He should still be lucky if he was to get 45 minutes each game, especially in Champions League where every game counts, but I have belief in him. I think he's Lyon material, and French league was the perfect league to start for him. Thanks to Metz and their kickass youth organization :smoking:
