Byron Moreno, the notorious assassin of the Italian World Cup dream has quit refereeing for good to delight not only Azzurri fans, but many other across the globe including his own countrymen.
Moreno was under heavy investigation following his dismal showing in the WC 2002 match between Italy and South Korea in which he controversially sent off Francesco Totti and disallowed an Azzurri goal. But, the real scene was created only recently when in a match between Barcelona de Guayaquil and Deportivo Liga de Quito, Moreno made some absolutely stunning 'mistakes'.
Moreno had an error-ridden match, but the one which led to a lengthy suspension came in injury time. In the 90th minute, with Barcelona leading 3-2, Moreno indicated 6 minutes of added time, but then decided to add 6 more minutes without any reason. Deportivo Liga scored twice in the 98th and in the 101th to win the match 4-3!
To make matters worse, in his official report Moreno indicated the scoring minutes of Deportivo's two goals as "89th and 90th".
Following these ridiculous performances, the Ecuadorian referee was banned for 20 domestic league games. But, his decision to hang up his whistle only came after FIFA announced a short while ago that he has been expelled from the international panel of FIFA referees for life.
A couple of years ago, Moreno was suspended for 6 rounds following another impressive series of 'mistakes' during the match between Portovidejo and Deportivo Cuenca, clearly evidence of the corruption that envelops the man.
