FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Defending champion Borussia Dortmund failed to join Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga when it conceded a late goal to be held 1-1 by Hamburger SV on Saturday.

Kim Christensen notched the equalizer in the 89th minute for the visitors, two minutes after his teammate Bernd Hollerbach had driven a penalty shot over the Dortmund crossbar.

Munich 1860 confirmed its surprising third place by beating Arminia Bielefeld 3-1.

In other matches Saturday, it was: Energie Cottbus 0, Schalke 1; Nuremberg 2, Borussia Moenchengladbach 1; Hannover 3, Wolfsburg 1; Hansa Rostock 2, Kaiserslautern 2; Bayer Leverkusen 0, Stuttgart 1.

Bayern Munich, which was idle Saturday, is assured of finishing the 11th round in the lead regardless of the outcome of its match against Werder Bremen on Sunday. Also Sunday, Bochum plays Hertha Berlin.

Knocked out of the Champions league, Bayern needs a victory in Bremen to come out of a slump.

Dortmund could have joined Bayern on points, at least for one day, had it overcome the injury-hit Hamburg.

But Dortmund produced a disappointing performance three days after beating Arsenal 2-1 to clinch a place in the second stage of the Champions League.

A capacity crowd of 68,600 at the Westfalen stadium saw Dortmund create few chance against its week opposition.

Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky, who scored one goal against Arsenal and had a role in another, scored against, this time netting with a well-placed volley form 14 meters (yards) out.

Defender Christoph Metzelder handled the ball on the line to give away a penalty in the 87th minute for Hamburg. But Hollerbach shot high and Dortmund appear set to earn the three points, until Christensen hit the target to earn his team its first points away from home.

In injury time, Hamburg lost striker Erik Meijer to a red card.

"It was clear that we would have a tough time so soon after the Champions League match, but after leading 1-0 we should have won," said Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer. "We made our own job difficult and Hamburg deserved the draw."

Dortmund remained the only undefeated team.

In Munich, the high-flying team of Peter Pacult earned a well-deserved victory over the newly promoted Bielefeld.

Croatian veteran Davor Suker put Munich ahead after 14 minutes and 21-year-old striker Benjamin Lauth, who had set up Suker's goal, added two more shortly after the half-hour. Lauth also had two goals in a game two weeks ago against Schalke.

Schalke went home with three points after beating hapless Energie Cottbus on a free-kick goal by substitute Andreas Moeller, a former German international. Cottbus remained locked to the bottom place and is beginning to look beyond salvation.

Bayer Leverkusen, last season's runner-up and losing finalist in the Champions League, continued to struggle at home when it lost 1-0 to Stuttgart to a goal by Silvio Meissner.

"It was a bitter setback for us," said Leverkusen coach Klaus Toppmoeller. "We tried to score early but we didn't succeed."

Stuttgart's substitute striker Viorel Ganea wasted three outstanding opportunities inside five minutes in the second half and was taken out by coach Felix Magath after spending only 22 minutes on the field.

Although its domestic season already appears to be a write-off, Leverkusen has advanced to the second stage of the Champions League.

ENERGIE COTTBUS 0 SCHALKE 04 1
German Cup holder Schalke 04 moved up two spots to fourth after a late free kick from Andreas Moeller gave it its first ever victory in Cottbus. The home side stayed bottom with just one win from 11 games.

NUREMBERG 2 BOR. MOENCHENGLADBACH 1
Czech defender Marek Nikl headed Nuremberg into the lead on eight minutes. Macedonia striker Sasa Ciric doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute.

Moenchengladbach reduced the arrears is this battle between two strugglers courtesy of midfielder Jeff Strasser in the 75th minute but could not fight back. They had midfielder Stephane Stassin sent off for a vicious tackle one minute from time.

TSV 1860 MUNICH 3 ARMINIA BIELEFELD 1
Croatian striker Davor Suker opened the scoring for the in-form Munich club from close range in the 14th minute. The visitors responded with an angled effort from Poland striker Artur Wichniarek one minute later.

The home side moved back in front on 30 minutes when promising striker Benjamin Lauth converted a fine Harald Cerny pass. Lauth was on target again seven minutes from the interval.

Bielefeld kept trying after the break, but TSV 1860 held on to stay in third place, just three points behind the leaders.

HANOVER 96 3 VFL WOLFSBURG 1
Hanover opened the scoring with a deflected effort from the edge of the box by striker Daniel Stendel in the 23rd minute.

Striker Fredi Bobic added another with a close-range volley five minutes later.

Romanian midfielder Dorinel Munteanu put the visitors back into the game on 76 minutes, but Hanover's Greek midfielder Kostas Konstandinis sealed victory six minutes later.

HANSA ROSTOCK 2 KAISERSLAUTERN 2
Midfielder Rene Rydlewicz put the home side ahead with a free kick in the 17th minute. Kaiserslautern fought back with a headed goal from Czech striker Vratislav Lokvenc in the 22nd minute.

Striker Marco Vorbeck restored Rostock's lead in the 72nd minute, but crisis-hit Kaiserslautern salvaged a draw six minutes later courtesy of substitute Michael Misfud.

BAYER LEVERKUSEN 0 VFB STUTTGART 1
Midfielder Silvio Meissner scored the only goal of the match with a low drive from inside the box in the 19th minute, sending Leverkusen, last season's runners-up, down to an embarrassing 14th.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND 1 HAMBURG SV 1
Champions Dortmund took the lead when Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky fired in a volley from just inside the box on 67 minutes.

But lowly Hamburg kept fighting and had just missed a penalty when substitute Kim Christensen netted the equalizer with one minute remaining. The visitors were then reduced to 10 men, Dutch striker Erik Meijer receiving his marching orders for contesting a refereeing decision.

The draw kept Dortmund in second place, two points adrift of leader Bayern Munich.
